Minnesota Primary Map - The New Yorker

The incumbent senator Tina Smith, a Democrat, is not seeking reëlection, and the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party primary to replace her has turned into a hotly contested race between Peggy Flanagan, the state’s lieutenant governor, and Angie Craig, a congresswoman representing a suburban area near Minneapolis. Flanagan has been endorsed by Smith and a number of national left-wing figures, such as Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Craig has received support from the Party’s establishment, including the former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and the House Minority Leader, Hakeem Jeffries. The two candidates have also received much attention for their diverging views on U.S.-Israel relations. Flanagan has criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza as a “genocide” and pledged not to take donations from the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, while Craig has defended receiving support from the group.

In the Republican primary, the front-runner is the sports reporter Michele Tafoya, who early in her career covered the Vikings and Timberwolves, before moving on to national broadcasts, including a stint as a sideline reporter for Monday Night Football. She has been endorsed by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and also by multiple former N.F.L. players. Her main opponents are Royce White, a former N.B.A. player and a perennial candidate in recent Minnesota elections; Adam Schwarze, a former Navy SEAL; and Tom Weiler, a veteran.

Minnesota’s two-term governor, Tim Walz, decided in January to drop out of the race for reëlection, amid criticisms that the state had mismanaged investigations into its welfare programs. The front-runner in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party primary is the U.S. senator Amy Klobuchar, a former Presidential candidate who enjoys strong popularity in Minnesota. Also on the D.F.L’s primary ballot are Bill Gates, Jr., a pastor; Kobey Layne, a former legislative aide; and Po Vang, a health-care-access advocate who suffers from chronic illness.

On the Republican side, the front-runner is Mike Lindell, a close ally of President Donald Trump and the founder of the company MyPillow. Lindell, who is perhaps best known for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, has been endorsed by Trump. His main opponents are Lisa Demuth, the speaker of the Minnesota House, and Kendall Qualls, a businessman and veteran who has been endorsed by the Republican Party of Minnesota. Also running are Raul Estrada, a construction worker and Native American advocate; John Krhin, a pastor; and Ross Nova, a veteran.
