'Minecraft' Tops 100 million Sales
The Minecraft monster shows no signs of slowing down. Today, developer Mojang announced that the block-building sensation has passed 100 million sales across all platforms, including PC, Mac, consoles and mobile. Since the beginning of the year, about 53,000 copies have been sold each day around the globe. The game is addicting. More than 40 million people open Minecraft every month to play with an axe, shovel, and sword. Except for Tetris, only a handful of games have come anywhere close to the 100 million mark.
The game's open design and unlimited potential as well as its achievement are the main factors that determine its success. As long as the outward-facing geometry of the game is comprised of colorful, simple blocks, players can create anything they like. Many players continue to play the game for decades despite their age. Mojang has provided the game with regular updates that include new mechanics as well as creatures and materials. The game's flexibility has also been a hit in the classroom, where it is used to teach geoscience, art as well as coding and other subjects.
Many were wondering what Microsoft was thinking of for Mojang when it bought the company almost two years back. A sequel? Perhaps an exclusive to Xbox, PC and Windows Phone? None of that has worked out. Minecraft is available on more platforms than ever before, and there's no word of a 'Minecraft 2.' Instead we've got an HoloLens Minecraft version which is a spin-off series of adventure by Telltale Games, and an acquisition by MinecraftEdu. This will eventually result in a new, education focused Minecraft. Soon, there will also be a version specifically for China.
Minecraft's popularity isn't showing any signs of waning. The game's strengths aren't an end-to-end story or amazing graphics. LOG DESIGN Because of this, it has a seemingly timeless appeal that draws young children as they get old enough to play it. If that trend continues, Minecraft will continue to sell out in a staggering amount.
