Minecraft Owner Bans NFTs In-game to Discourage Profiteering
Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a strongly-held position against NFTs. In a blog post entitled "Minecraft and NFTs," the studio, which is owned by Microsoft, wrote that "integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are not something we will support or allow."
"To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated within our server and client applications, nor can Minecraft in-game content , such as worlds, skins, persona items, or any other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset," Mojang said.
According to Mojang the studio, some companies have come up with "NFT implementations that work with Minecraft world files and skin packs." The studio suggests that there might be Minecraft "collectible" NFTs or that players could earn NFTs through activities in Minecraft on a server or earning them outside the actual game.
Mojang claims that these practices encourage digital exclusion and scarcity, which goes against Minecraft's values. The studio has stated that NFTs "are not inclusive of all communities and create a scenario in which the haves and the not-so-haves." Valve has also taken a firm stand against NFTs and blockchain games on Steam. A majority gamers have been against NFTs. Ubisoft stopped making NFTs to Ghost Recon Breakpoint only a few months after the initiative launched. Epic Games stated last year that it is "open" to blockchain-based games on the Epic Games Store. The store received the first blockchain-based game in June.
Mojang does not completely rule out the possibility of incorporating blockchain technology into the future. However, it says that it doesn't have plans to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft right now.
