The hugely popular block-building game Minecraft could soon be turned into a film.

Markus Persson, Minecraft creator has revealed this week that Warner Brothers was in conversation with him about the project.

Mr Persson said he revealed the news to thwart another person who was trying to leak details about the transaction.

Movie news site Deadline reported the one of the producers of the recently released Lego Movie is handling the project.

Warner was planning to transform the "live action" version of the game into a feature film, said Deadline.

The film's production is at a very beginning stage, as Warner only recently acquired the rights to make use of Minecraft's iconic blocks, characters and monsters.

Best games

The announcement comes less than two weeks after Minecraft creator Mojang has taken action to shut down the Kickstarter project to raise funds for an animated film based on the game.

Film adaptations of best-selling games have had a rough past in Hollywood and a lot of projects never even get past the initial planning stage.

A film set in the science-fictional Halo universe, for instance is in development for nine years but filming has yet to begin despite numerous scripts being written.

Films that are based on Bioshock, Gears of War and Metal Gear Solid Work have been discussed, but none of them has yet started filming.

World of Warcraft is a game that is being made into a film. Filming began in January with Duncan Jones, a British director. The film is expected to be released in early 2016.
