Sexy spoilers for Netflix's Mindhunter ahead!
Let's not get it twisted: Mindhunter is a series that focuses, first and foremost, on serial killers and their respective manners of thinking. Most of these killers' gruesome crimes are tied to their unhealthy sexual attitudes, and they reveal deeply disturbing ideas about women and consent while being interviewed by main characters Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) . But it's precisely these murderers' problematic sexual attitudes that make the protagonist's sex scenes in the first two episodes of the Netflix series so important.
Despite his increasingly obvious immersion in the twisted world of serial killers and violent criminals, FBI behavioral scientist Holden maintains a healthy sexual relationship with his girlfriend, Debbie . Though some aspects of the couple's sexual rapport — namely, Holden's lack of hesitation to perform oral sex on Debbie — are deemed "deviant" by his employer's standards, they are treated with a no-nonsense attitude that is refreshing not only within the show's dark context, but in the entertainment sphere as a whole.
Holden (clearly) isn't perfect , but the sex scenes with his romantic partner offer an all-too-rare look at a respectful, caring, and mutually pleasurable sexual relationship. In most onscreen representations of hetero sex, male pleasure takes precedence; it feels unusual to watch a man prioritizing a woman's orgasm, especially presented without some sort of cheeky reference to how "generous" Holden is during those intimate moments with Debbie. Their private life simply includes oral sex. Period.
Debbie isn't afraid to lead during her sexual encounters with Holden, either, vocalizing the things she likes and dislikes and encouraging him to learn from those preferences. She and Holden have equal agency and are active participants in the bedroom, which shows in their scenes together.
These sex scenes serve as a foil to the generally f*cked up sexual attitudes exhibited elsewhere in the series and even serve to make viewers question which side the men in their own lives fall on. Holden's relationship with Debbie also makes his own journey within the series — from respectful, curious, and relatively straight-laced to somebody who chummily discusses "getting that young p*ssy" with convicted serial killers — all the more jarring of a transition.
Holden's mindset toward sex no doubt continues to evolve throughout the show, but whether it's for better or worse is still up for debate. Since season two is on the way , though, let's just enjoy the gift we've been given . . . a few sexy scenes that empower both sides of the equation.

Let me begin with im currently watching s1 ep2 and just started but I'm trying to grasp why it goes to him eating his gf out and she's directing him where to go. I don't understand how this plays in?
He is socially awkward and sexually inexperienced. But other then that not much.
Ik the scene was partly there because sex sells . But I also assumed that it was to show how different she is from Holden and what he’s use to from women. Before Debbie, he wasn’t really around women, making his perception of them as sensitive and naive (more or less typical for the era).
Debbie challenged his views on women. She knows what she wants, she’s as knowledgeable on psychology as he is (maybe even more so), and she didn’t let him treat her as a doormat
In the scene she’s being more “dominating”. Holden is surprised by her being clear on what she wants and her use of the words the fbi considered “too vulgar for women to hear”. Like their other interactions, this challenges Holden’s view on women.
Then again I could just be reading too much into it
The setting of the show is in a time where people were much more uptight about sex. I think later in that same episode Holden revises the list of "deviant terminology" to remove cunnilingus.
It's in part to show the times, and just how unscientific the procedures at the FBI were. (as though someone who says or does cunnilingus is at special risk for being a criminal)
I thought the sex stuff was really important. Show was set in a time when women's freedom to experiment was burgeoning and I found frequent parallels between he and Debbie's sexual encounters and the interviews he does with psychopaths. Debbie's sexual appetites unseat him; Holden's morbid interest into the sexuality of criminals disturbs her. Parts of their relationship are supposed to mirror his career.
I thought it was to show him learning / realising that what was considered taboo or outside societal norms had changed and was mainstream. He the goes and argues to change the words and acts considered obscene / perverted by the FBI.
Also, they spoke about fellatio as a sexual deviation and she was showing him that it was not
I think the doubling of sexual themes between the interview room and the bedroom one of the most interesting parts of season 1, and something I felt was sorely missing from later episodes post-Debbie actually. The degree of self-identification it triggers in Holden, as the showiness of Debbie in lingerie and heels evokes the lust killer's shoe fetish, intensifies the 'staring into the void' aspect of his character. He is clearly sexually inexperienced, or at least buttoned and has the strangest environment in which to explore those urges. I also think having the through line of sexual violence is really important to the show's climax, with Edmund being a physically threatening presence not only murderously but sexually. It's a dual-threatening of masculinity. Holden has to both navigate his relationships with the women in his life as a man - reminiscent of the killers he speaks to - and ultimately as someone victimised.

I can't understand the Debbie lingerie scene, she put on a show, she wears the heels. holden says something isn't right, i assume it's the shoe thing, she says "that's the point." i really don't understand this interaction. What's the point? if you understand my question?
Holden is exploring the world of serial killers and an intense relationship at the same time. I love that when she says go to the right he says - your right or my right; so Holden.
I wouldn't even can that an erotic scene. Just a sex scene to establish the characters attitude toward sex and their sexual dynamics toward each other. A very necessary scene.

I think your question is one of the main premises of the show, which is kind of cool.
I totally get what you're saying and thought the same, tbh, but after reading post about Holden giving her the tongue-tornado which lead him to push the reclassification of deviance vs modern day societal norms (to essentially bring the FBI a bit more up to speed). I hadn't thought about that and thought it was interesting.

If that is the scene where she says a lot of naughty words I think it's a callback to him being uncomfortable with telling her about the words you weren't supposed to say in a scene where they were leaving a theatre.
I honestly think that they wrote that character into the pilot with plans and then realized she didn't fit because it really goes nowhere. I love this show but that whole subplot is easily the weakest part of season 1.
I think it's a insight into what was being discussed and considered "deviant" at that time. Going down on someone was considered Deviant behavior, which is what connects debbie and holden in many of their conversations. What is socially normal behavior, sexual behavior, ect. Very soon after the first sex scene holden motions to retract some of the words that were at the time officially considered vulgar and deviant. It all ties into the bigger questions and topics brought to light in the series in regards to what makes people do what they do.
The sex scenes made me uncomfortable. It’s just a personal thing. I can see how it might have an important part of the story. They could have cut those scenes shorter. But maybe that’s the point of the scenes, to make some of us uncomfortable?
The romantic side scenes are really weird and unecessary in an otherwise great show
As important as the sex scene was to the story, it didn't have to be that graphic. It was just so gratuitous and made me uncomfortable. I always think of the actors who are doing this--and how can they?
