With the Euros in full flight, Copa America 2021 is hardly dominating the airwaves or transcending moods beyond the South American peninsula. Though that is not to say that it has been uneventful, with Messi magic lighting up the tournament and Brazil dominating the group stages, there has been plenty of action you might have missed.
The quarter-finals pitted two fierce rivals(Brazil and Chile) against each other. Brazil came into the clash in red-hot form, Thrashing Venezuela and Peru, 3-0 and 4-0 , respectively. The 9-time competition winners(Brazil) had to score a last-minute winner to see off Colombia 2-1. A 1-1 draw against Ecuador, being the only blemish on an otherwise flawless group stage campaign, as they won the group at a canter.
The Chileans though were patchy at best in their group-stage matches, drawing two of them, with the same scoreline (1-1) against Argentina and Uruguay. The La Roja(Chile) were comfortably beaten by Paraguay, 2-0 . Their only win (1-0) came against an abysmal Bolivia side. The La Roja with five points came 4th in their Group.
Brazil to no one’s surprise entered the tie as heavy favorites and were expected to breeze past the Calamitous Chileans.
The match ended 1-0 in favor of the Brazilians, who had to play the majority of the 2 nd half with 10 men after Gabriel Jesus lunged into Chilean defender(Mena), recklessly.
The match started, with pressure right off the bat from Brazil. In the 20 th minute, Neymar skipping past two La Roja(Chile) players, chipped in a ball with his left, to the far post where Roberto Firmino was left unmarked but the Liverpool man couldn’t turn his effort towards goal, as he missed the target completely.
Chile responded with a move of their own, with Ederson called into action by Eduardo Vargas, who turned Thiago Silva inside and out before unleashing a shot from a tight angle.
Jesus too had a sniff at goal, but his shot was comfortably tipped over the bar by Claudio Bravo. The two sides went into the break, with the game evenly poised at 0-0.
Tite(Brazil Head Coach) brought on the in-form mid-fielder Lucas Paqueta, who replaced the ineffective Firmino. Paqueta quickly went about doing the business as he played a clever one-two with Neymar, before the ball ricocheted off a Chilean defender, landing nicely into the path of Paqueta, who slammed it home, making it 1-0 to Brazil.
Soon after the goal, as Brazil looked to put the game beyond the grasp of Chile, the game took a turn for the worse for the Brazilians. Gabriel Jesus chasing a ball from Ederson went hell for leather, as he took out Eugenio Mena with an inexplicable challenge. The referee was left with no choice but to dismiss the Manchester City striker.
Now with an extra man, Chile ratcheted up the pressure as they looked to find an equalizer. In the 62nd minute, Chile thought they had their goal as Vargas thumped the ball past Ederson after the ball dropped down in his path from a freekick. The linesman’s flag went up straight away, for offside, as the Brazilians breathed a collective sigh of relief.
The Chileans were unrelenting, pinning Brazil in their own half. The La Roja came close again, Brereton Diaz met Mena’s cross, but this time the looping header grazed the crossbar. 2nd half substitute Jean Meneses saw his 77th-minute snapshot parried away by Ederson, as Brazil held on to their lead to book a place in the Copa America 2021 semi-finals.
The Chileans despite controlling the 2 nd half, looked out of their depth against a Brazilian side who defended their goal resolutely and held firm amidst the Chilean onslaught. The La Roja lacked ideas going forward and kept hoping for a moment of individual brilliance to bring them level, which of course never came.
Brazil survive and face Peru in the semi-finals of Copa America 2021 .
