Exploring the history and lore of the witch Tasha, the title character in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons book Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
The upcoming supplemental Dungeons & Dragons book, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything , will be released later this month, and fans may be wondering who exactly Tasha is. Many may be familiar with the Tasha's Hideous Laughter enchantment spell, which causes the victim to fall into a fit of debilitating laughter, but who is the mysterious titular witch behind it?
Tasha - also known as Iggwilv, Natasha the Dark, Louhi the Crone, Hura, Wilva, the Witch Queen of Perrenland, and more - was created by D&D cofounder Gary Gygax, who drew inspiration from the Finnish epic poem, Kalevala . The name Tasha supposedly came from a young girl who wrote Gygax letters in crayon during the dawn of D&D .
Many authors have contributed to Tasha's lore and history, but have done so very carefully and with little inconsistencies. She's appeared in every D&D edition as one of the game's oldest and most iconic villains, and her power is on par with famed wizard Mordenkainen, who's shown playing Wizard's Chess with Tasha below. She's known to be selfish, materialistic, and vain, and is the author of the Demonomicon , a fictional tome of demonic lore. Blogger Sean on Power Source RPG has compiled an extensive collection of Tasha lore, and it's summarized here.
Tasha was born in the world of Oerth and raised in The Dancing Hut by adoptive mother and powerful hag, Baba Yaga. She was originally called Natasha - later Natasha the Dark - and Baba Yaga taught her how to summon demons at the age of 10. She also had an adoptive sister, Elena the Fair. Natasha grew into a powerful spellcaster , and upon leaving the hut, lived in a tower near the City of Lopolla in the World of Greyhawk, where she went by Hura and conducted vile investigations. Hura plundered the Vault of Daoud, resulting in her expulsion by the city residents.
She ended up in the Free City of Greyhawk, where she went by the more familiar Tasha, and joined the Company of Seven - an adventuring group whose members would later achieve great fame and power. Zagig Yragene, a Wizard in the party, took on Tasha as an apprentice and lover, and it was during this time she wrote the tome Lore of Subtle Communication which included the infamous Tasha's Hideous Laughter spell , among others. Together, the spellcasters imprisoned the demon lord Fraz-Urb'luu to Castle Greyhawk, and Tasha learned many secrets from him without Zagig's knowledge. Soon after, she stole many books from Zagig, including his Tome of Zyx , which Tasha would later modify, add to, and rename the Demonomicon of Iggwilv .
She started going by Iggwilv and used her newly-learned magics to venture to the Yatil Mountains where she bound the son of Fraz-Urb'luu - Tsojcanth - to her will, making him her servant for generations. She summoned and confined another demon lord Graz'zt, who she seduced and bore a son to, later known as Iuz the Evil . She also had a vampire daughter named Drelzna, whose father is unknown. With Graz'zt's help, Iggwilv went on to build an army to attack and control the nation of Perrenland, which she dominated and ruled for 10 years from her secret lair in the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. Soon after, Iggwilv accidently let Graz'zt escape her control, resulting in an epic battle between the two, where Iggwilv ultimately - though barely - came out victorious. Graz'zt fled to his Abyssal home, and the weakened Iggwilv suffered a damaged psyche and great loss of personal power. Upon hearing this, the oppressed Perrenland subjects took up arms and defeated her forces, regaining their nation.
For a while, Iggwilv was presumed dead. Her son, Iuz, became a demigod and started the Greyhawk Wars. Iggwilv reemerged with a restoration of her powers and aided her prodigal son. She once again attempted to summon and bind Graz'zt, but this time the demon lord confined Iggwilv with him in the Abyss, where she's believed to have remained ever since, bearing him multiple children and maintaining a love-hate relationship with the renowned Dark Prince. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything will include new rules, subclasses, spells, and more, with the witch's thoughts and perspective sprinkled throughout, adding more glimpses into her already lengthy backstory.
Dungeons & Dragons Tasha's Cauldron of Everything will release November 17th, 2020.
