MikroTik RouterOS implements OSPF version 2 (RFC 2328) . The OSPF protocol is the link-state protocol that takes care of the routes in the dynamic network structure that can employ different paths to its subnetworks .
The first OSPF router on a subnet is always elected as Designated Router , when a second router is added it becomes Backup Designated Router . When existing DR or BDR fails new DR or BDR is elected to take into account configured router priority .

At least one routing device on each logical link must be eligible to be the designated router for OSPFv3 . By default, routing devices have a priority of 128 .
