How do you imagine they turned friends? It's mentioned that they were great friends, but Mikoto was older than Kushina, so they were not classmates or in the same team.
Interesting... their relationship was mirrored by their sons so... the apple doesn't fall far from the tree
By conjecture: Mikoto was like an older sister figure that helped Kushina in the academy. Mikoto was too young to be Kushina teacher, but taking account that Kushina was bullied, Mikoto could have helped the younger girl to improved her self steem, training with her and helping her to get better with shurikens or any random stuff.
There's high possibilities that Mikoto was an outcast and bullied in the academy as well (for being an Uchiha probably) so she was emphatic towards Kushina's problems and supported her dream to be Hokage.
Since when were the uchiha bullied in the academy?
What i don't understand is, why doesn't Mikoto just ask Sasuke to talk to Naruto when they were in the academy? Like I'm pretty sure at the time he wouldn't say no since in the flashbacks Sasuke was actually pretty friendly at the time. I'm not saying to take him in or whatever but at least acknowledge the existence of the parent less child of your dead friend.
That was the period where everyone's getting suspicious of Uchiha for the nine tails attack. Even if Mikoto wanted to take care of Naruto, she probably knew better (considering she's the wife of the head of Uchiha) than to associate herself with Naruto a.k.a triggering her clan and the village side.
Maybe Mikoto was a spy or just a backstabber. I mean, while she was Kushina friend she was planning the coup. It can be that Mikoto had contradictory feelings and genuinely liked Kushina, but still that's fishy. Especially the way she and her family ignored Naruto...
It's probably because of Nine Tails suspicion on the Uchiha. It would like the Uchiha are trying to manipulate the Nine Tails and would make life even more difficult for the clan
We don't relly know, but allow me to speculate for a bit....
Mikoto was a Jonin, and even was considered, by Sasuke, to be better at some things (shurikenjutsu) than her husband. We also don't know where exactly Itachi and Sasuke's elemental affinities came from. We know they got Katon from their father, but it is possible that Raiton, Suiton andFuuton came from their mom. Anyway.... If she was strong enough to be a Jonin, and Kushina was, as we know, the Jinchuriki during the Third War, then it is possible Mikoto was, at some point, assigned as her personal guard during missions or on the front. I kind of doubt that Kushina was never in war combat, but it would be risky to send her out there without someone watching her. Anyway, that's just my little speculation. There are numerous possibilities. Maybe they randomly met at a fesitval, or an open air market, or on the street. Or maybe they met at a Jonin Council meeting. Or maybe Mikoto was assigned as her squad leader, at some point. The age difference is enough that Mikoto could easily have been a Chunin squad leader of Kushina's.
another thing to mention... Mikoto's ninja registration number is one off from Nawaki's.... Just throwing that out there. They were almost certainly in the same class, and possibly on the same team. In that case, it is likely tht Tsunade - who we know knew Kushina relatively well - introdiced them at some point.

That's a really interesting observation, makes me imagine how strong a grown-up Nawaki would be.
Probably seen each other around at the store doing wifey duties. They were pregnant around the same time and prob connected. It’s hard not knowing The hokages wife and since mikoto was the wife of a clan head ( the strongest one at that ) it would make sense they are atleast familiar
Kushina didn't even know that Mikoto had a second son, because Kushina was forbidden from announcing her pregnancy publicly due to the kyuubi stuff.
But make sense that they turn friends doing wifey duties, after all both were married to "politicians".
Kushina and Mikoto's parents were friends so they were close since childhood despite the age difference
I think it was just arbitrary information that was never expanded on. Mikoto might've played a bigger role other than the wife of the Uchiha head, but like other characters who needed backstory she got sidelined.

I think it depends on the person who is watching the anime. Some people like Hinata over Sakura or vice versa and others like Kurenai or Ino. I prefer Kushina, mainly because of her hair.

Kushina Uzumaki ( うずまきクシナ , Uzumaki Kushina ) was a Konohagakure kunoichi who originated from Uzushiogakure 's Uzumaki clan . She was the second jinchūriki of the Nine-Tails . [4]

Born into the famed Uzumaki clan of Uzushiogakure, Kushina lived most of her youth being caught up in war, making her seek for a daily peace. At a young age she was sent to Konoha and enrolled in the Academy . [4]

Wanting to make a strong first impression, she proclaimed to her class that she would be the first female Hokage . The other kids laughed at her statement, and began calling her "Tomato" ( トマト ) because of her then-round face and fiery red hair. This prompted her to lash out and pummel the kids who teased her. This, in addition to her red hair flying wildly around her as she did so, earned her the nickname of Red Hot-Blooded Habanero ( 赤い血潮のハバネロ , "Akai Chishio no Habanero" , Viz: Red-Hot Habanero). [5]

Kushina was eventually told why she had to leave her home of Uzushio and go to Konoha; because of her special chakra, she was to be the next jinchūriki of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. [6] Kushina was terrified by the idea, but she was comforted by the Nine-Tails' then-current jinchūriki, Mito Uzumaki . Before the transfer was performed, Mito advised Kushina that love was the only way to tame the Nine-Tails and overcome its hate. [7]
