Has anyone ever done something other than carpet to cover the tunnel in their Midget? I know there is the typical carpet kits but has anyone gone with like straight metal? or maybe like fiber-glassed or body puttied it? Maybe even built a custom wood cover? Looking for ideas for my own Midge

Fellow Midget Owners, Has anyone fitted a metal gearbox tunnel cover (see photo) from a Mark 2 Midget when using the Datsun 5-speed gearbox? Maybe the hole will have to be modified to accommodate the fifth gear position of the lever.
The transmission tunnel cover has six: three each side, where one is at the firewall, one on the back side of the crossmember, and and at the back end along the tunnel.

Originally the exposed front edge of the carpet on the cover of the handbrake cables was trimmed. The gearshift had a leather boot sewn into the tunnel carpet. Underfelt was used only on the floors and transmission tunnel, and not on the toe board or the footrest on the passenger's side. Originally the TD's did not have carpeting behind the seats.

The main issue with a thru-the-tunnel system is getting the exhaust pipe itself down the tunnel itself. There are handbrake mounting braces and some other interferences that need to be removed. I use some 2" U-bend pieces to make the pipe down the tunnel, up and over the cross-member and then following the shape of the tunnel.
