In mid-February, YouTube duo iLOVEFRiDAY released its diss song, “Mia Khalifa,” after misinterpreting a fake tweet seemingly posted by the former porn star of the same name. Now, a viral video first posted on the popular social media app TikTok has skyrocketed the song to No. 7 on the Genius Top Songs chart.
As users increasingly searched its lyrics, “Mia Khalifa” reached 1,427 pageviews on September 29 and saw exponential pageview growth, breaking 5,000 by October 9. On October 20, the track surged to 10,107 pageviews prior to reaching its most recent peak of 24,740 on October 23.
In the 15-second clip, a cosplayer with the TikTok username nyannyancosplay dances to the track while lip syncing the following lines:
The cosplayer is dressed as Nico Yazawa from Love Live! School Idol , and her moves seemed to impress other TikTok users, who gave her video over 77,400 likes. Other people followed her lead by posting their own clips using “Mia Khalifa” as the audio. To date, there are over 1.3 million TikTok videos with the song. Following the natural progression of the internet, the clip’s popularity caused it to spread outside of the app, and one fan even uploaded a 30-minute loop of the video on YouTube.
Smoke Hijabi is the iLOVEFRiDAY member spitting the lines from the song in the clip. She’s pictured in the fake Mia Khalifa tweet posted by Instagram meme page trashpump :
The photo is a screenshot from the video for iLOVEFRiDAY’s October 2017 song “Hate Me,” in which Smoke Hijabi performs the song while wearing a hijab and smoking what appears to be a blunt. After the fake tweet started circulating around social media, Hijabi responded with a diss video on Twitter. Shortly afterward, she recorded “Mia Khalifa” with Xeno Carr , who is the producer and other member of iLOVEFRiDAY.
Prior to the diss track, iLoveFRiDAY earned buzz for “Travel Ban,” Hijabi’s response to President Trump’s since-superseded executive order that attempted to ban people from traveling into the U.S. from several countries where Islam is the primary religion. On the track, she claims that she successfully made it to the U.S. from Pakistan in spite of the travel ban. It’s worth noting, however, that Pakistan was not among the countries listed on the executive order.
In addition to Mia Khalifa, iLOVEFRiDAY is known for beefing with YouTube star WoahVicky. In May, Hijabi and Xeno Carr released a diss track titled “Woah Vicky.”
iLOVEFRiDAY’s growing popularity is the latest example of people parlaying their YouTube fame into a burgeoning music career. Leading the way is Queen Naija , who scored a pair of Hot 100 hits while singing about the fallout of her breakup with former YouTube partner Chris Sails .
Correction: The original version of the story identified the parody subreddit ToiletPaperUSA as being affiliated with 4chan and the alt-right when that is not actually the case.
