We came across the new Xiaomi Mi Outdoor Bluetooth speaker (XMYX02JY) by chance at TomTop in search of new and exciting gadgets. Finally a new speaker from Xiaomi, with Bluetooth 5 and USB-C. To our surprise, it even comes with CE certification and English user manual for the European market! We simply ordered it.
The Xiaomi Mi Outdoor Speaker comes in a plain white cardboard box. Next to a product photo of the speaker, you’ll find a small Mi logo and Bluetooth 5.0 lettering on the front. On the left and right sides, three functions or technical features are listed along with a small logo. On the back you’ll find the full technical specifications of the speaker – in traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese and, of course, English.
Inside the carton is the Xiaomi Mi Outdoor Speaker itself, a USB-C charging cable and a user manual. As with the Earfun Go and Tribit XSound Go , there is no jack cable included. Spoiler: The new Xiaomi Speaker doesn’t have a jack plug!
The Xiaomi Mi Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker is based on the design of the Mi Speaker 2, again using a cylindrical design with a height of 14.7 cm and a diameter of 7.3 cm .
In terms of color it is kept in a chic shade of grey , but to my surprise there is no prominently placed Mi logo. Only the loop in Xiaomi orange , which is attached to the back, lets the trained technical nerd eye recognize the manufacturer.
While the upper side and the first 1.5 centimetres of the body are made of ABS plastic , the rest of the body is covered with a textile fabric . This reminds me a bit of the cover of the Ultimate Ears Boom 3 speaker .
The Xiaomi Mi outdoor speaker is rubberized on the bottom side and has a non-slip stand. Here you will also find the CE mark, a small manufacturer logo and also a control button.
Personally, I like the new Xiaomi Mi outdoor speaker visually quite well. I like the fact that the speaker is virtually unbranded at first glance, which in my opinion matches the simple but elegant appearance of the Bluetooth Box. In comparison to Tribit XSound Go or Earfun Go , I’d rather put the Xiaomi Mi Outdoor Speaker on a shelf.
In terms of workmanship and the materials used, I have nothing to complain about with the new Xiaomi Bluetooth Speaker. There are no production or material defects, very good!
I must admit that the technical specifications of the Xiaomi Mi Outdoor speaker disappoint me a little. It is only equipped with a 52 mm speaker with 5 watts . In addition, there are at least two passive radiators , which are supposed to give the sound more depth.
Wait, 360° sound and only one speaker ? I was a bit surprised at first, but in practice it provides a better or more “real” 360° sound than the Tribit Stormbox or the Earfun UBOOM, for example.
The loudspeaker is oriented downwards and on the one hand uses a large part of the body as a pressure chamber. On the other hand, the sound escapes through a cavity between the underside and the loudspeaker, making the sound equally audible from all directions with consistent quality. A clever solution that I have never seen before with a Bluetooth loudspeaker.
In practice, I think the 360° sound is good in itself and the sound experience is always the same, no matter from which direction you look at the speaker, but a comparatively small 5 watt speaker can’t work wonders either.
So the sound of the Xiaomi Mi outdoor speaker is thin , in keeping with its performance. The performance in the high frequencies is quite solid and in the upper midrange also quite good. But even vocals sound thin and lack volume and depth.
In the bass range the bass is at best hinted at and it’s practically only possible to guess how the frequencies should actually sound.
Compared to the even smaller Xiaomi AI Mini Speaker , the midrange and bass are of course better. However, this speaker is also available for about ~$15. In terms of price the Xiaomi Mi Outdoor Speaker is in a league with the Tribit XSound Go and the Earfun Go , sometimes even more expensive than these.
Comparing the three speakers with each other, Earfun Go and XSound Go perform better not only on paper. The two speakers, which are available for ~$25 depending on the offer, offer much more volume in the midrange than the Xiaomi Mi outdoor speaker.
Personally, I like the bass better, too; XSound Go and Earfun Go can reproduce frequencies where the Xiaomi Mi Outdoor speaker has long reached its limits.
The Bluetooth Speaker is equipped with the current Bluetooth 5 standard and is supposed to reach a range of up to 10 meters . We were able to confirm this value in the test on free space.
The Bluetooth module’s performance is somewhat below average indoors. The connection remains stable within a room, but if obstacles come between them, connection dropouts occur.
Just like Soundcore in the new Flare 2, the Xiaomi Mi Outdoor Speaker also does without a jack plug . Thus, it’s unfortunately not possible to use the loudspeaker wired. It’s a pity that the trend of omitting the jack socket now seems to be moving in on the Bluetooth speakers as well. The built-in USB-C charging port is hidden behind a small rubber cap on the back of the speaker.
After unpacking, the already mentioned top side made of ABS plastic turned out to be not only a design element but also a volume control! We already know it from the Tronsmart T6 Plus . In practice, the knob works very well; it changes the volume reliably and gives a clear haptic feedback.
In fact, there is only one other button besides the knob. The on/off button is located on the bottom. This is equipped with further functions:
It’s nice that Xiaomi has implemented at least a few features, but I’m personally annoyed that I can’t change the title with the speaker. In addition, the position on the bottom is very bad for comfortable operation.
Xiaomi unfortunately does not give any exact information about the battery capacity of the Mi Outdoor Speaker, only the runtime is estimated at 8 hours . We could roughly confirm this in repeated tests at a volume of 50 – 70%.
The recharging process via the USB-C port took about two hours . Depending on what kind of adapter you use, it can go a bit faster or slower.
All in all, the Xiaomi Mi Outdoor Speaker (XMYX02JY) is a well-rounded product. I personally like the simple design, which does without a conspicuous branding, and the impeccable workmanship.
Unfortunately the usability is limited and cumbersome compared to other Bluetooth boxes. I am also not sure whether omitting an AUX connection is not a mistake. Although I personally hardly use it, it is still a limitation in the area of functionality.
The price of ~$35 is not very high for a Bluetooth speaker, but for the same money you get much better sound quality for your money with the Earfun Go or the Tribit XSound Go . Therefore I would personally prefer this to the Xiaomi Mi Outdoor Speaker, in my opinion it is only something for Xiaomi fans or design lovers.

I can't believe it took me this long to order this speaker...I'm dumb for waiting. If you know nothing about this speaker it is a vaunted favorite in the bluetooth speaker community (look it up on Youtube, there are multiple full length reviews with side by side comparisons.) That status is for good reason. The sound is literally astounding! I don't mean you will sit in your chair with the bass rumbling, but I do mean you will stare at it while songs are playing wondering how the hell they got that much bass and clarity out of something so small. It's also very beautiful in person, most definitely materials and quality matched to Apple products. I am something of an obsessive collector of bluetooth speakers. I watch hours and hours of video blogs and reviews and read and compare and then far too often I come to order them here on Amazon (I'm a poor college student currently.) This is my one "cheat" category so I try to keep it reasonable: maybe 10-40 bucks for a speaker and I don't have much guilt when I click "complete order." I have followed this speaker, and it's other iterations for around three years now and it was worth the wait. I've owned around a dozen of these similarly priced speakers (Anker aluminum (older model, kind of rare), the mini jambox, the UE Roll, Belkin Fusive (again a little older, cool speaker), the Soundbot SB571 (very good for the money), to name a few, and this Mi is just better all around in so many ways. The most important this is really how authentically it recreates the audio signal coming into the speaker. It's very rich, very clear, very balanced, unlike anything this size on the market. That said, if you can afford the 100 dollar range for a speaker and you truly value sound then go for it, there are, again, dozens of excellent options in that price range, but this one is well beyond it's cost in what it rewards the listener with. I'm somewhat of an audiophile as well. In particular I've acquired over the years, as gifts, a few very excellent Bang & Olufsen pieces (hundreds to thousands for most pieces of their equipment.) One piece, the A2 Active (great speaker on every level except for dismal, I mean unacceptable, battery life- and to boot you can't use it while you charge it at any normal listening volume) has unbelievably good sound staging and the clarity of the treble and mids rivals most home systems costing much more. It has three tweeters, two 3" drivers and two 4 inch passive woofers. They combine to make magic at all but the highest volumes where the bass starts to distort mildly. The sound is stellar and worth every penny if you don't need to use the speaker for more than about two hours before fully recharging it. Back to the real world where social events, workouts or yard work last for more than an hour or two then Harmon Kardon is hard to beat for every price range in which they complete. Again the HK Onxy Studio will blow your mind for the hundred or so dollars it costs on sale. But, none of these speakers are portable due to charging or size constrictions so you are left choosing among small, portable form factor speakers (like this Xiomi Mi) and barely tolerating the extreme limitations that this small a package creates so you can put it in a purse, book bag, or even a pants pocket. Bass is obviously never good, mids get washed out if bass is at all present and the treble is screaming in your ear to the point of listening exhaustion in short periods of time. Not so with the Mi, it's so easy to listen to. It's almost like someone took the two tweeters and one small woofer out of my A2 active and put them in this small beautiful case and are only charging 40 DOLLARS for it! I can't believe how true and good the treble sounds, while the mids are rich and present with a healthy enough dose of bass to heartily round out the sound. I love it! I'm also a sucker for Aluminum and Stainless steel cased speakers due to their rigidity and aesthetic beauty and this speaker is just beautiful for what it is. I guarantee people will ask where you bought it and how much it cost. It's that good, just buy it if you are shopping in this price range because by a good margin it kicks the @$*% out of anything you can buy for this money in sound, size and quality. You will adore it as long as you aware that it is a small speaker. You will love it most though because it is so darn good for how small it is.

This has impressive sound for a portable Bluetooth speaker with such a small footprint. You're not going to get high fidelity from something like this but music sounds unusually balanced where usually the tone feels much more narrow with this type of speaker. The Mi Portable would be a good choice for a bedroom, dorm or hotel room but I would be less inclined to choose it for outdoor use. The design is elegant and the Mi Portable appears to be well made but not rugged where you would be comfortable exposing it to the elements. Using such a small speaker outdoors where you might need booming loud volume--at a barbecue for instance--might not be a great idea. This is a small Bluetooth speaker designed with an emphasis towards sound quality which is something potential buyers should definitely keep in mind. It's not that this unit isn't capable of playing music loud but if maximum volume is primarily what you are looking for you should definitely buy something larger instead. The speaker comes in a box with no instructions or accessories. If you are already familiar with Bluetooth speakers it pairs easily enough. There are 4 buttons on the side. The largest at the top controls power and can also be used to pause playback. The bottom button is used to put the speaker into pairing mode. The two middle buttons appear to control volume and skip tracks depending on whether you apply a short press or long but I have never used them. There is a USB-A charging port (the kind common on Android phones that haven't adopted the newer USB-C standard) so you probably already have a phone charger that can be used with this. You can charge the speaker by connecting it to a computer with a powered USB port or by using a phone charger plugged into a wall outlet. Doing the latter allows you to use the speaker while charging even if the battery is completely drained. If you are new to the Xiaomi brand which has little presence in the United States you might find yourself surprised by the quality of this $40 Bluetooth speaker with its beautiful design and fine sound. The small size (about 2.5 inches tall and 7 inches wide) makes it very portable but also not the best choice for people looking for a blasting sound. Xiaomi also makes fine cell phones but at the time of this review only two that are fully compatible North American LTE service--the Mi Mix 2 (currently $390 on Amazon) and the Mi Mix 2S Global Model (currently $590 on Amazon). If you are in the market for an unlocked cell phone both are excellent. In recent years I have owned a Pixel XL, One Plus 5 and Essential PH-1. The Mi Mix 2 is the first phone of the bunch that I loved and the Mi Mix 2S is even better.
