The repair I performed involved a LOT of temperature cycles with tweaking the bourdon tube adjustments to get the gauge back in calibration. My advice is therefore... if the broken gauge's needle is sitting horizontally at rest on the left side of the scale, try the repair yourself if you're mechanically inclined.

To adjust the valve clearances in your MG Midget, start by removing the valve cover to gain access to the valves. Rotate the engine to the appropriate valve clearance position as specified in your automotive repair manual. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the valve stem and the rocker arm.

If you temp gauge is mechanical do not cut the tube, you will need the thread that out as well or remove the gauge. AES list a flat seal for an 88mm gauge but not for other sizes. They do list a sponge cord seal which you cut to length, in 3mm and 4mm thicknesses, 4mm being recommended for 'larger' gauges.

Once I had removed all of the underseal and dirty off much of the out metal surface was corroded, but not so bad that I thought would affect the structural integrity or performance.

Condition This MG Midget is a MkIII from 1973, being a 'round wheel arch' model. The car had been completely rebuilt using a new Heritage bodyshell supplied by Ron Hopkinson back in 1992. A protracted rebuild was finally completed early in 2018, which has resulted in the car clocking up a mere 250 miles since being put back on the road.
