MEXICO— What to do when winter hits your country and COVID pandemic restrictions forces you to stay home? The right answer should be stay home, but thousands of U.S. and Canadian tourists flocked to Mexico’s nudist beach of Zipolite to leave something more than their dollars behind.
Zipolite, on the Pacific coast, has along with Tulum and Cancun become one of the most popular tourist destinations even though Mexico has now the third highest COVID mortality rate in the world .
During the first days of 2021, Zipolite welcomed thousands of foreign tourists looking to escape strict pandemic measures in their countries .
“We were just dealing with too much. Lockdown affected us a lot, and specially my daughter because we live in a small apartment, with no possibilities of going out somewhere. I feel we really needed to go out,” said George Barrera, a 35-year-old Texan who traveled with his family to Zipolite during the last days of January.
Zipolite sits in the San Pedro Pochutla municipality in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.
Around 20 flights arrive at Oaxaca Xoxocotlan International Airport every day , many loaded with tourists looking for the famous nudist beaches in Zipolite.
Although the annual nudist festival got canceled to comply with Mexico’s COVID restrictions, tourists still enjoyed the lovely beaches, open restaurants, and a booming nightlife, something not common in most part of the world today.
“We came to get away from all the coronavirus noise in the US. We are tired of being home, and because of COVID this is one of the few places we can travel to right now”, said Brian Mercado, a 32-year-old tourist from California.
Jane Cusak, 40, from Toronto, Canada, said she traveled with her dog expecting some restrictions on her arrival in Zipolite, but was surprised how relaxed it was.
“I was planning for Tulum, but read online that it’s now packed of tourists so I decided Zipolite, looking to get away from the city and enjoy a tranquil beach, not too crowded. I really was amazed at how relaxed the pandemic measures are down here”, she said.
According to Lane during her whole trip from Canada to Zipolite she encountered no restrictions other than the use of a face mask, although on her way back she had to test for COVID before boarding.
“There is a testing spot at Zipolite, near the touristic area where you can go and get tested for something around 50 dollars”, she said.
Business owners welcomed tourists with a bittersweet taste. For most of them the flock of tourists over Zipolite during the holidays saved them from going broke, but at the same time they brought the possibility of a COVID breakout.
“I decided to stay open because the economy is an essential part of our lives and we can’t keep living with our business closed”, said Fernando Coronado, owner of Zipolite’s Hotel Noga.
The good news? Coronado’s hotel surpassed last year’s occupation, with more than 80 percent of the rooms sold during January. The bad news? He and his wife got infected.
“My wife got infected first, and then me, although only she tested. We came out good and to my point of view, it wouldn’t make sense to close now. We will not get infected again”, he said.
During the last days of January, Oaxaca reached an all-time high record of infections with more than 22,000 cases in a single day, according to the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering (JHU CSSE) .
But in Mexico rules are hard to follow, even for the same authorities in charge of making them.
Mexico’s deputy health minister, Hugo Lopez-Gatell, spent New Year’s Eve in Zipolite and faced heavy criticism after a photo was leaked where he was seen gathering at the beach with several people with no face masks on.
For John M. Williams, a Texan who retired in Zipolite 10 years ago, January was hell in paradise.
“I’m diabetic and I’m 68 years old. I’ve been very worried about my health since none of the tourists are using face masks. They are being very disrespectful”, he said.
Williams said he acknowledges Zipolite would not exist without tourism, “but at the same time I live here, they don’t. They can leave and I’m left nervous and anxious”.
But Coronado is hopeful Zipolite will get through.
“It might sound weird but here at Zipolite we carry a very relaxed and spiritual lifestyle and we are sure we will not get infected anymore. For some reason we don’t get sick”, he said.
The same thoughts are shared by San Pedro Pochutla’s mayor, Saymi Pineda, according to a recent Facebook publication .
"If you still doubt on how safe Zipolite is during the pandemic, let me tell you, you have nothing to worry about, our beach is such a safe place that our deputy health minister, Hugo Lopez-Gatell Ramirez enjoyed it,” stated the publication shared by Pineda.
Zipolite or “the new Tulum” as some call it, is a sunny Mexican paradise worth waiting for, to enjoy naked and maskless once things finally get better.
As Coronado puts it: “Zipolite will be here forever, the virus won’t.”

The latest in a litany of horrors in Ukraine came this week as Russian firepower rained down on civilians in a busy shopping mall far from the front lines of a war in its fifth month. While much of the attritional war in Ukraine’s east is hidden from sight, the brutality of Russian missile strikes on a mall in the central city of Kremenchuk and on residential buildings in the capital, Kyiv, unfolded in full view of the world and especially of Western leaders gathered for a trio of summits in Europe. Were the attacks a message from Russian President Vladimir Putin as the West sought to arm Ukraine with more effective weapons to bolster its resistance, and to set Ukraine on the path to joining the European Union?

An annual nudist festival in Oaxaca will go ahead as planned at the end of this month despite Covid-19, say its organizers, who have promised that they will follow all required sanitary protocols.
The Zipolite Nudist Festival — put on by the Mexican Nudists’ Federation — has taken place in the coastal municipality of San Pedro Pochutla for six years on Mexico’s only legal nude beach. The event attracts as many as 8,000 people.
This year, it will run from January 29–February 1.
The festival’s promotional brochure warns visitors that they need to have reservations in a local hotel and will be expected to observe sanitary guidelines, including wearing masks and using sanitizer. It also urges people to avoid coming if they are experiencing sore throat, fever or fatigue and is apparently trying to avoid any gatecrashers augmenting the numbers by urging those who don’t already have plans in place not to go.
“If you don’t yet have flight and hotel reservations, then we invite you to stay at home,” says a message on the festival’s Facebook account, adding that another event is planned for September 17–19.
The publicity about the festival has inspired some negative comments online, with one commenter saying, “This will be chaos. We are already seeing the first cases [of Covid-19] in Zipolite.”
Festival organizers defended their decision to go ahead with the event, saying that the town’s general assembly voted on December 20 to allow it to happen with the understanding that it would not be a massive event and that organizers would make sure visitors comply with health protocols, both on the beach and off.
Municipal officials have made no comment on their decision even though the entire state is currently listed as orange or “high” risk on the national coronavirus stoplight map.
Currently, Oaxaca has accumulated 28,730 cases of the coronavirus and 2,153 deaths from the disease. Of those, the coastal region where this event is to take place has seen 1,459 Covid cases and 143 deaths.
The municipality of San Pedro Pochutla has registered 145 cases and 10 deaths.

It's an old practice in Guerrero that authorities have been unable to eradicate

In the second poorest municipality in one of Mexico’s poorest states, girls under the age of 15 are being sold by their fathers as virgin brides for 180,000 pesos (US $9,400), or in many cases even less.
In the last 17 years, more than 300 young women have been forced into marriages of that type in Metlatónoc, Guerrero, according to a human rights center in the Montaña region where the municipality is located.
In most cases, the fathers of prospective grooms pay the fathers of young daughters so that their sons can have a teenage, virgin girl as a wife.
If a higher price is quoted, the typical response is “they don’t want her as a whore,” Melitón Hernández, a police chief in the town of Yuvi’nani, told the newspaper El Universal .
A local lawyer and advisor to the municipal trustee said that the tradition is engrained in society, above all among the indigenous Mixtec Tu’un Savi people.
“It’s an old practice that we can’t eradicate even though the law says that the practice is a crime, specifically human trafficking,” Serafín Nava Ortiz said.
Another lawyer, who works for the Tlachinollan human rights center in Tlapa, has worked on more than 100 forced marriage cases over the past 17 years in which she has tried to convince parents of girls to alter their opinions about the practice.
Girls who refuse to get married at such a young age turn to the center to act as a mediator with their parents, Neil Arias explained.
Often, she believes she is successful in changing the parents’ minds but admitted that once they left the center’s doors, she didn’t know what the final outcome would be.
“How many marriages end up being carried out or are left unregistered? It’s unknown. It’s a hidden figure, the cases are still constant,” she said.
In its 2017 annual report, the Tlachinollan center stressed that the practice has lost all of its traditional significance to become nothing more than a “commercial exchange” that infringes on a girl’s body and dignity and “could result in the crime of human trafficking” being committed.
Treated like objects and the private property of their husbands, the girls and are forced into sexual relationships without giving prior consent, the center said.
Cases of rape, family conflict and breakdown and monetary disputes have all been reported in relation to the practice. At least one man has also been imprisoned on human trafficking charges despite arguing that he acted in good faith in accordance with his community’s traditions and customs.
In an interview, even the police chief admitted buying wives for his sons, saying that three years ago he paid 110,000 pesos (US $5,735) for a 14-year-old bride. Asked where he got the money from, Hernández responded, “I was on the other side [United States].
“I brought about 300,000 pesos from there . . .” he explained. Years earlier, he paid 130,000 pesos for a wife for his eldest son.
Others sell goats, pigs or land to raise the funds, Hernández explained, adding openly that many men also cultivate opium poppies. He also joked about buying his own wife, saying flippantly that he paid “50 pesos about 55 years ago.”
However, for the Tlachinollan center and at least some elements of local authorities, the issue is much more serious. Nava Ortiz explained that while the matter is more complex than it seems at first glance, the practice of buying underage girls for marriage against their will must be stamped out.
“For us, the authorities, this practice is a crime,” the trustee advisor said. “We have to end this practice, through talking [and] raising awareness.”
