Mets Dominate Astros in Interleague Showdown Behind Alonso’s Two Homers

Houston, TX — June 10, 2024 — The New York Mets delivered a commanding performance against the Houston Astros on Tuesday night, securing a 7-2 victory at Minute Maid Park. Pete Alonso led the charge with two towering home runs, while starting pitcher Luis Severino stifled Houston’s lineup with six strong innings.

Alonso got the Mets on the board early, launching a 423-foot solo shot off Astros starter Framber Valdez in the first inning. He wasn’t done, adding a two-run blast in the fifth to extend New York’s lead to 5-1. The Polar Bear now has 18 homers on the season, putting him among the league leaders.

'I was just seeing the ball well tonight,' Alonso said postgame. 'Framber’s a great pitcher, but I got a couple of pitches I could handle and didn’t miss them.'

Severino (5-3) continued his resurgence, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven. The Astros’ only early offense came from a Yordan Alvarez RBI single in the third, but Houston struggled to capitalize with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-7 in key spots.

The Astros’ bullpen didn’t fare much better, as reliever Seth Martinez gave up two runs in the seventh, including an RBI double by Francisco Lindor. Jose Altuve homered in the eighth for Houston’s second run, but it was too little, too late.

'We didn’t execute tonight, plain and simple,' Astros manager Joe Espada said. 'Credit to the Mets—they outplayed us in every phase.'

The win moves the Mets (35-28) into a tie for the second NL Wild Card spot, while the Astros (32-32) continue to hover around .500 in a competitive AL West. The series continues Wednesday with Justin Verlander set to face his former team against Mets’ rookie Christian Scott.
