Metal sex toys don’t have any give like rubbery silicone toys. This means that a given steel plug might feel ~1/4 of an inch bigger than same sized silicone toys.

The Pfun prostate plug combines the high quality stainless steel nJoy is known for, with a little more depth which makes it ideal for hitting the p-spot. We’re officially still on the fence on this toy because it sets off a lot of our red flags and we haven’t had the chance to test it in person yet.
Namely, it seems a little too good to be true in the price point, and we see several variants of this same plug show up on different Amazon storefronts.
It is believable that body safe aluminum could be made this cheaply – it’s definitely a step up in price compared to the awful chrome plated anal toys out there.
Since we have no reason to believe this isn’t the real deal, we wanted to include it as a budget option for those looking to dip their toes into the world of metal butt plugs.
Again, take this recommendation with a grain of salt as we haven’t personally tried this toy. At the same time, it has universally great reviews and does seem to be made of body safe aluminum, so it is a viable option for someone looking for a safe metal toy on a budget.
We’d like to see a wider base and more size options, but it’s a great metal anal plug for less than $30.
Unlike silicone, stainless steel and aluminum have no ‘give’ to the material. This means an equivalent sized metal plug is going to feel a bit larger than a silicone plug.
Silicone is also preferred for longer plugs, as silicone bends and contours with your body. That said, the firmness of metal plugs means they’re great for prostate stimulation. Metal can also be heated or cooled for temperature play.
It varies on a lot of factors, but we generally recommend between 1″ – 1.5″ diameter, and err on the side of a bit smaller since metal plugs feel thicker than traditional ones. Between 2.5″ – 4″ insertable is a reasonable length for a first anal toy.
Metal butt plugs have the advantage of being compatible with every kind of lube – silicone, water-based, or oils. Since water based oils dry out quickly and are best for silicone toys, we generally recommend a silky silicone lube. But your standard bottle of water-based will still work just fine. Metal toys are also super easy to clean – simply scrub with warm, soapy water and dry. Or you can even put them in the top rack of your dishwasher (although be careful of plugs with special attachments like a jeweled base).
The one caveat is to not scrub with anything too abrasive, as you don’t want to create tiny grooves and scratches that can eventually harbor bacteria.
A T-base is generally the safest for all anal toys, as it’s impossible to pull up inside your anus. Less common, but even better is an O-ring base like nJoy uses on their steel butt plugs.
However, circular bases are much more common, and have the benefit of not getting in the way of double penetration. As long as your butt plug has a big enough circular base you’ll be fine. A good rule of thumb is to make sure the base is wider than the maximum width of your toy.
If you know what you’re shopping for, then sure. That said, quality metal toys are expensive and you want to be sure to get the size and dimensions right. We generally recommend buying a couple of basic silicone toys before upgrading to a luxe metal butt plug.
We hate to have to include boring talk like this but we’d be irresponsible if we didn’t. The quick fact of the matter is: there are a lot of cheap, dangerous metal sex toys on the market. All body safe metal sex toys are going to be somewhat expensive , and you really do get what you pay for.
It may be tempting to compare two similar-looking butt plugs and choose the one that is half the price, but when it comes to metal sex toy materials you can’t afford to skimp on safety. As we covered in our detailed safe sex toy materials cheat sheet, the only safe metals are 100% stainless steel or high quality aluminum.

The problem with metal sex toys isn’t quite the same as with other sex toy materials. All of these listed metals are non-porous and anti-bacterial, so they won’t harbor unsafe bacteria (which is a problem with some plastic materials like PVC).
The main problem with materials like copper, zinc, or chrome is that these heavy metals can leech out of the toy, and absorb through your anal lining.
This is particularly true if you’re planning on leaving your plug in all day or overnight – you really don’t want heavy metals leeching into your rectum for hours at a time. Best case scenario is a rash and some discomfort; worst case scenario is a hefty medical bill and a lengthy recovery.
