Meta Ads Analytics: What Advertisers Should Expect Next.

Meta Ads Analytics: What Advertisers Should Expect Next.

In early March, Meta officially announced a change to its model for measuring ad performance. The goal is to make reporting in the ad account easier to work with, while also simplifying account attribution and data reconciliation across different analytics platforms, such as Google Analytics.

In this article, we’ll look at what exactly has changed and how these updates may affect media buyers, advertisers, and marketers.

Metrics now focus more on clicks and visits

Most analytics systems are built around a search-based approach, where algorithms primarily rely on clicks on ads and banners. Ad models inside social platforms work differently: users do not only click on creatives, they also share posts, comment on them, and send them to each other.

Because of these mechanics, data from Meta Ads Manager often differs from the numbers shown in third-party analytics platforms.

To make statistics on ad views and user interactions more precise, Meta’s developers decided to place more emphasis on clicks. This is a fairly significant change, because previously likes, reposts, saves, and comments could also be counted as clicks in the ad account. That was one of the reasons why Ads Manager data often did not match third-party analytics tools.

After the update, Meta will only count clicks on links that lead to an external website. Internal conversions will also be taken into account. At the same time, ad billing methods will not change. Everything will remain as it was.

Traditional metrics move into engage-through attribution

All other metrics will remain in the updated ad account, but they will be moved into a separate category called engage-through attribution.

This includes:

  • Likes on creatives;
  • Post saves;
  • Reposts.

Meta is also changing its approach to evaluating views of video ads and Reels. Before the update, a view meant interaction with a video for more than 10 seconds. Now this threshold has been reduced to 5 seconds.

This change is linked to statistics recorded by the algorithms: 46% of purchases and service orders after viewing an ad happen within the first two seconds.

Meta also decided to deepen its cooperation with major independent analytics platforms, including Northbeam and Triple Whale. These companies use attribution models that take both ad clicks and views into account.

Conclusions

All announced changes will roll out over the coming months. Metrics in Meta Ads Manager reports will most likely differ from the numbers that advertisers were used to seeing before. This will be the main sign that the new measurement model has started working.

Once the changes take effect, advertisers will need to adjust the way they approach analytics metrics. The ad account will show different types of ad interaction more clearly, with a separation between clicks, visits, and other types of user engagement with creatives.

Going forward, Meta plans to further improve how marketers and advertisers understand the statistics collected in the ad account. For example, there will be an evaluation of user interactions with ads, making it possible to see how those interactions affect conversions.

Click attribution is already one of the standard tools for working with ads in Meta Ads Manager. The broader engage-through attribution model gives marketers more room for analysis by helping classify social media behavior beyond direct clicks.

Everyone who uses Meta Ads Manager will feel these changes in one way or another. Engage-through attribution should make it easier to understand how ads influence revenue. At the same time, high engagement numbers on their own will not mean higher conversions and will not guarantee revenue growth.
