MetService Warns of Heatwave as Temperatures Smash Records Nationwide

WELLINGTON — A nationwide heatwave triggered by a high-pressure system has seen temperatures smash records for this time of year, prompting MetService to issue widespread heat warnings and health authorities to ramp up safety measures.

MetService reports that cities from Auckland to Christchurch experienced sweeping temperature rises, with inland locations pushing toward the upper 30s and some spots nearing 40°C. The extreme heat is forecast to persist into the weekend, increasing the pressure on energy networks, transport, and public health services.

'This is an unusually intense heat event for the season, and conditions are set to remain hot for several days,' a MetService meteorologist said. 'People should limit prolonged outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and seek shade or air-conditioned environments during peak sun hours.'

Health officials warned of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and the risks to the elderly, children, and those with preexisting conditions. Hospitals and clinics prepared for higher admissions related to heat stress, while local councils opened cooling centers in urban areas and encouraged workplaces to adjust schedules.

Energy providers urged customers to moderate power use during peak demand while councils advised motorists to watch for heat-related road work delays and pavement damage. Forecasters say relief may begin to arrive later in the weekend, but for now residents are urged to stay cool, check on vulnerable neighbors, and follow local advisories.
