Mermaid Parade Celebrates 42nd Year in Style

Mermaid Parade Makes a Splash with Record Attendance and Spectacular Displays

Coney Island, NY – June 22, 2025 – The 42nd annual Mermaid Parade dazzled spectators yesterday as thousands of colorful mermaids, sea creatures, and nautical enthusiasts flooded the streets of Coney Island in a vibrant celebration of art, fantasy, and beachside fun.

This year’s parade, themed 'Neptune’s Revival,' saw a record-breaking turnout, with over 10,000 participants and an estimated 100,000 spectators lining Surf Avenue and the boardwalk. The event, a beloved Brooklyn tradition since 1983, featured elaborate handmade costumes, shimmering scales, and fantastical floats, all paying homage to the ocean’s mythical allure.

Highlights included:

King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, played by Broadway performers Javier Torres and Lila Chen, leading the procession in a majestic seashell chariot.

A giant octopus float with moving tentacles, created by a local artist collective.

A kids’ mini-parade, where young mer-children showed off their own creative costumes.

A surprise appearance by pop star Marina Del Rey, who performed her hit 'Ocean Eyes' from a float designed like a pirate ship.

'It’s all about creativity and community,' said parade organizer Diana Szeinberg. 'People spend months crafting their costumes—it’s like Coney Island’s own underwater Carnival.'

The festivities concluded with the traditional 'Dip in the Sea', where participants waded into the Atlantic Ocean to 'return to their natural habitat.'

With another successful year in the books, organizers are already planning for 2026—promising even bigger waves of imagination next summer.
