Some cancer patients with higher profiles but average wallets are turning to crowdfunding to overcome cost barriers to cancer care
Cancer doesn’t discriminate — it affects people young and old, public and private. Award-winning adult film actress and model Marica Hase is one of many figures who has been going through a cancer battle in the public eye recently. Tokyo-born Hase, 37, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of last year. She did not specify how serious her diagnosis was, but she did say that she needed to have a mastectomy and would need to take some time off from her career to recover. Earlier this year, Hase set up a GoFundMe page to help her pay for the treatment, with the goal of $50,000 — and now, she’s just $1,000 shy of meeting that goal.
In her most recent online video communication with her fans, made last month, Hase, accompanied by a talking puppet, laughingly tells her fans she has only one surgery left. Donations have since continued — and are continuing — to flow in.
Indeed, devoted fans have come out in hordes to help support Hase with whatever they can spare — and many have left heartwarming and encouraging messages for the model. “Marica is [an] angel that needs $$$ to help with her healing,” wrote one fan named Natakim.
“For the artists who give very much for their admirers, an admirer can give a little back. Thank you,” wrote another named Davinand.
Hase has garnered attention in recent months from cancer survivors around the globe for the candid way she is dealing with the disease. Hase, who has starred in numerous explicit videos and was the first Japanese Penthouse pet, has been very public about her battle with breast cancer. She has taken to Instagram multiple times throughout her journey to update fans on her status. At the end of March, Hase shared a photo from her time in the hospital explaining that her doctors decided she wouldn’t need radiation or chemotherapy — but she still had a few processes to get through before she could get back on set. Hase said she would need recovery time, rehabilitation, and hormone therapy.

When it comes to breast cancer, hormone therapy is used for hormone-receptor-positive cancers, which are the most common types of breast cancers. When a tumor is “hormone receptor-positive,” it means that a pathologist has run special tests on the cancer to determine it is positive for either the estrogen and/or progesterone receptor. When a cancer tests positive for being hormone-receptive, it means the cancer needs the hormones estrogen and/or progesterone to grow.
Hase didn’t specify which type of hormone therapy she needs, as she’s left the details of her diagnosis quite vague despite being so candid about her cancer journey. However, from the looks of her social media, she’s recovering really well. Over the past few weeks, Hase has posted several colorful photos from California’s Salvation Mountain, where she looks both happy and healthy.

Any of us who has been on a cancer ward can tell you that there is a certain leveling of the playing field goes on. You find all kinds. Rich and poor. Homemakers, bankers, and yes, adults film stars.
Which is perhaps why a number of people in the SurvivorNet community recently pointed out the very candid way that the pornographic model and adult film actress Marica Hase has been dealing with her cancer. Hase, who’s starred in numerous explicit videos and was the first Japanese Penthouse pet, has been very public about her battle with breast cancer. Now, having undergone a mastectomy in Southern California, she says her insurance will not cover the full cost of her treatment and that she’ll be out of work for several months as she recovers. So Hase, 37, who plans to resume working as soon as she regains her strength, has turned to GoFundMe in hopes that her loyal and devoted fans will help pay for her treatment.
“This month, I will get a bi-lateral mastectomy and reconstruction at the same time,” she wrote on the crowdfunding page, which was started in February. “It will be performed at the City of Hope Facility/Providence Hospital. I want to work in the industry again, so this seemed like the best option.”
Hase has set a goal of $50,000 to cover the cost of treatment, promising to donate anything that’s left over to the City of Hope hospital, “who helped save [her] life.” She originally said that she may need chemotherapy or radiation if anything is left over after her surgery, but she confirmed on Instagram in March that her doctors don’t think either will be needed. She did not specify which stage of breast cancer she was diagnosed with.

So far, Hase’s many fans have responded en masse. She’s already raised more than $47,000 towards her goal.
Hase’s case has gained prominence as she is a star in the adult entertainment world, but there are many less famous women who also undergo mastectomies. And many of those women then opt for breast reconstruction if it’s possible.
Dr. Andrea Pusic, Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, discussed the benefits of reconstruction with SurvivorNet a few months back, noting that it’s a great way for women to regain their sense of self after dealing with breast cancer (Dr. Pusic was not addressing Marica’s case).
“Even if you didn’t have reconstruction, you had nothing, you will look fine in your clothes, but you won’t feel fine in your clothes,” Dr. Pusic said. “So a lot of breast reconstruction is trying to erase the trauma of the mastectomy surgery, putting the cancer behind a patient, saying this is in the rear-view mirror, and putting her back on track. I think that over time, with our different techniques of reconstruction, immediate reconstruction, all the new things that we’re doing, we’re just getting closer and closer to that goal of allowing a woman to have had the surgery, had all the cancer surgery, but be herself again.”
In Hase’s case, reconstruction is important for her career as well as her sense of self, due to her plans to resume her work acting in adult films — though she did say the surgery will keep her away for at least four months. “I love everyone in the industry and I feel like you’re family. And, family helps family,” Marica wrote on her GoFundMe page.
Breast reconstruction has become so sophisticated in recent years that it’s possible Hase could continue successfully performing in adult films for many years to come.
