Melinda Smith (born November 30, 1982 in Los Angeles ), better known for her stage name Mercedes Carrera , is an American former actress and model of German , Lakota , Puerto Rican , and Swedish descent.

Smith began her career in the 1990s after making her film debut in Hey, Al (1997), and later starred in teen roles with her recurring role as Bridget Renee on the WB television series Valentine Hope (2002–2003). She received lead roles in independent films including Savannah (2004), Tiny Dancer (2007) and Iced Cold (2008). Smith earned supporting roles in bigger films such as Strike Force (2005), Beverly Hills, 90210 (2006), and Void Moon (2009).

Smith and her boyfriend Jason Whitney were arrested in 2019 with eight counts each of sexually abuse of a child under the age of 10.

Melinda Smith was born in Los Angeles, California. Her mother is from Porto Ricans and her father from Swedish Naïve Americans. During her childhood, she often moved with her family from place to place, due to her father's work as a contractor for the military. She first worked in the aviation and aerospace industry and in the telecommunications sector.

Smith made her film debut in the 1997 film Hey, Al . She went on to make a brief role in The Israeli Lamp in 1998, and on the season finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer ' s third season . Smith later starred in 2001 ' s Only You Can Save Mankind . She received attention for her performance in the independent black comedy film Dorbees in 2003.

From 2002 to 2003, Smith played Bridget Renee on the WB ' s television series Valentine Hope .

In 2004, Smith starred in Savannah as late pornographic actress Shannon "Savannah" Wilsey . Her performance was well received, and she gained a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Female . She also guest starred on television series such as Vanished , Cold Case , The Division , and Law & Order . Smith went on to appear in Strike Force as the former police partner of Heather Knox ' s character in 2005 and in Beverly Hills, 90210 as the lesbian love interest of Hilary Duff 's character in 2006. Her performance earned her several award nominations including the 2005 Teen Choice Award
for Breakout Female Star in Strike Force , as well as the 2006 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress, and the 64th Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama in Beverly Hills, 90210 . She and Duff won the 2007 Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie Chemistry, and a nomination for Best Kiss . Smith contributed to a guest appearance on The N ' s South of Nowhere .

In 2007, Smith starred with Nathan Fillion , Scott Caan , and Heather Shanholtz in Tiny Dancer with roles in Red Spies and Preston . In 2008, she starred in the thriller Iced Cold .

Smith had supporting roles in 2009 in the action horror Lord Shark , Rubik , Blood Lost , and Void Moon . She played a witness in the 2010 remake of Straight Time . Between 2008 and 2009, Smith guest starred on television series Valentine Hope , and NCIS: Los Angeles .

Smith gained recognition in the crime drama thriller Streetlights with Ethan Hawke , Jeremy Sisto , David Henrie , Pete L. J. Dickson and Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Angie Stevenson in 2011. She played Michelle and added glaucoma drops to her eyes to simulate the appearance of a drug addict in the film. Later in 2011, Smith starred in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol , the fourth installment in the Mission: Impossible film series opposite Tom Cruise , Jeremy Renner , Simon Pegg , and Paula Patton .

In 2012, she portrayed a small supporting role in Sheep Yorkie as Stacy. Smith voiced Decepticon Shadow Striker in 2013's Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye and 2014's Cybertron . The same year she played the lead role in The Bourne Sanction . In 2015, she reprised her role as Spencer Davis in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation . A Mission: Impossible spin-off focusing on her character, Operation: IMF was released the following year.

Smith voiced a character in the animated film Rio 3 and played an agent working for Mr. Nobody in The Fate of the Furious ; both films were released in 2017. She lastly starred in 2018 ' s Race in the Mountain .

Smith was a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment. Her boyfriend is Jason Whitney, an adult film producer. On June 29, 2021, Smith revealed she had tested positive for COVID-19, and was placed in Isolation Unit (IU). [2]

On Tuesday February 5, 2019, Smith and Whitney were charged with eight counts each of sexually abusing a child under the age of 10. [3] They also face a count of possession while armed with a handgun.

Detectives from the Rancho Cucamonga police department stated they were first notified of sexual acts against a girl under the age of 10 on January 31, 2019. The girl was sexually abused repeatedly over four months by Smith and Whitney. [4] Smith's trail has faced several delays.

Adult film actress Melinda Smith—or Mercedes Carrera, as fans know her—was arrested Tuesday, along with pornographic films producer and director Jason Whitney, for alleged sexual abuse of a young child, CBS Los Angeles reports. Police have reason to believe Smith and Whitney may have sexually assaulted additional victims.
The Rancho Cucamonga Police Department were first made aware of the alleged sexual assault on a minor on January 31. Smith and Winston stand accused of "inappropriate touching, oral copulation and digital penetration." After searching Smith and Whitney's home police found evidence corroborating their extensive interview with the young girl, finding two loaded handguns and a bedroom "set" for recording pornographic videos. The abuse allegedly occurred over a four-month period.
On Wednesday, Whitney and Smith each plead not guilty to eight counts of sexually abusing a child under the age of 10. They were denied bail and are still in custody.
In addition to her career in pornography, Carrera is also a well-known figure in the right-wing Gamergate movement. Prompted by false allegations made by an ex-boyfriend of game developer Zoe Quinn in 2014, Gamergate activists harassed women game developers and video game analysts. While adherents claimed Gamergate was a crusade against journalistic bias they saw in games journalism, several of their principal claims were false, including that a game developer had sex with a game reviewer in exchange for a favorable review (the site ran no review of her game).
Carrera became a star in the movement and with the far right more broadly, appearing on programs hosted by right-wing conspiracy theorist Paul Joseph Watson and Gavin McInnes, founder of the violent extremist group the Proud Boys.
"We all get to make the choice every single day about who we want to be." Carrera said in a Daily Caller profile, railing against feminists and "SJWs," or social justice warriors—an intended insult widely used by conservative social critics against feminists, Black Lives Matter and other civil rights activists.
Police have released photos of Smith and Whitney because of the possibility that other children have been abused under similar conditions and ask that victims call the Rancho Cucamonga Detective Bureau at (909) 477-2800, extension 2850.
