Working as a physician in an emergency department may give you the feeling you are in the middle of a stormof patients. It is our goal with this congress to help physicians deal with this storm. Europe needs emergency medicine, as can be seen in the repeated rises in patient numbers being treated in Europe's emergency departmentseach year. In some areas, emergency departments now appear to provide the basic healthcare for their countries. We in emergency medicine are one of the core essential services which are always there for our people: 24 hours a day, seven days a week, onholidays and at weekends. We must treat anyone, for almost any illness or injury, at any time. The themes covered in this congress will help emergency physicians to provide the best medicine under these challenges. We have structured ourthemes according to the spirit of EuSEM: Global connections, international research, leadership and the desire to provide information hot off the press. The congress will provide state of the art lectures covering such sectors as pre-hospital medicine, pulmonary and respiratory emergencies, toxicology, infectious diseases and sepsis, cardiovascular emergencies and neurological emergencies. Another major congress focus includes paediatric emergenciesalong with trauma, head and neck trauma and critical care, emergency care of the elderly and psychosocial emergencies. As a scientific congress taking a wide view of emergency medical needs, this event also has as its keynote theme Connecting with Excellence. We have a series of keynote and hot topic speakers with some of the most distinguished names in emergency medicine. Our colleagues in TheNetherlands invite us to share their greatly-respected expertise in key emergency medicine sectors in their national track. Administration tracks will provide help for management and organisation with themes including cost effectiveness and performance in the emergencydepartment, quality of care, patient safety and risk management. With EuSEM celebrating its 20th anniversary, we also look into the future with extensive research into emergency medical topics. The EuSEM Young EmergencyDoctors represent the future of European emergency medicine and they have shaped a large part of this congress with themes such as educationafter graduation, development in emergency specialty and education in emergency medicine. Do not miss the great offer of important topics in the pre-courses, the keynote and hot topic speakers, the SIM War — the simulation competition- and the EBEEM prep course. The beautiful and dynamic city Amsterdam, with its long tradition of global trade, is a marvellous setting for our congress. I wish everyone a successful - and enjoyable - congress. Notificationsregarding acceptance of abstracts were made in early July More than posters will also be presented during the congress. Abstracts will be considered for publicationonly if the author is registered for the Congress. A small panel will judge the presentations, anda first place prize will be awarded to the top presenter, in the form ofcomplimentary registration to the EuSEM Congress in Torino. This abstractwill also be presented at the Awards Ceremony. Delegates receive a name badge with their registration materials. Badges should be worn at all times, as they will be used to control accessto all EuSEM Congress sessions and activities. Exhibitor staff will beadmitted to scientific sessions. Banks and Currency Exchanges arewidely available in Amsterdam. The congress will officially open on Sunday, 28 September No lunches will be served during thecongress. It will only be available to EuSEM registeredparticipants. We appreciate feedback about yourexperience at the Congress. Your input is essential in planning futureEuSEM activities. Registrations can be made onsite with theorganising companies, subject to availabilities. The previewroom is located in the Gashouder. Computers will be available for speakerswho need to check their presentations or make last-minute updates. Maywe remind you that the only authorised media is PC or Mac video projection. Connection to the network. You can either be connected to the system via 3G or via WiFi. A free access to the wireless network is available in the congress venue. Attendees of the Congress can view theirePoster on designated viewing screens. The advantage of this system is that you canshow a lot more information than on classic paper posters. Poster presenters nolonger have to pay to have their paper posters printed, and they no longer have totravel with cumbersome poster tubes. This year, e-Posters have completely replaced the printed posters and theOrganising Committee is sure that you will share their enthusiasm for thisinnovative approach. This system has been introduced to a number of scientific andmedical conferences in recent years, as a digital alternative to paper. This year, ePosters will be a single slide PowerPoint presentation, in a 'landscape'format. They will be displayed on 15 giant LCD screens, using tactile features. Authors were requested to send their ePosters before 25 September to ourTechnical Team as it will not be possible to submit them onsite. Location and presentationePosters will be displayed during the whole congress, from Sunday 28 September until Wednesday 1 October on 15 horizontal giant LCD screens, inthe ePoster area Gashouder Exhibition area. There will be no specific time allotted to ePoster presentations. Participants will be able to watch the eposters freely on the LCD screens, and browsethem using a tactile user interface. Poster dimensionsYour ePoster is a single slide Powerpoint fileThe ePoster dimensions are cm in width and 75cm in height. For any request about the ePoster format and display, you may send an email to:eposters eusem His research focuses on organizational safety culture and patient outcome, biomarkers and resuscitation of infection and sepsis, and EM-CCMphysician demographics and education. Like the merchants from Amsterdam who made the city rich by reaching out tothe world, we must also look beyond our own countries. We must be open to new ideas and seek new knowledge to find new answersand the congress will be a great opportunity for delegates to connect with fellow practitioners in Emergency Medicine. From previous congresses, delegates wish to have concise updates for effective and efficient clinical practicein modern emergency departments and in the pre-hospital setting. The congress will deliver sessions to satisfy those demands andgive extensive Emergency Medicine knowledge for use in the clinical setting. The congress will give delegates a greater understandingof the development and progress of EM in Europe from an international viewpoint. The overall objective is the advancement of international emergency medical services and education in Europe in particular - and theworld in general. Create a new prehospital research proposal, or use your current prehospital research proposal2. Each attendee will be asked to actively participate in the group discussions. Course descriptionAfter 5 introductory presentations by experts with experiences in prehospital research, the participantsof the workshop will be separated in distinct groups. Participants introduce their own current versionof a research proposal by which is then discussed with the researchers, group and in the plenarysession. The goal of the interactive workshop is to learn the most important elements that contributeto good quality and successful prehospital research. The goal is not that the research proposalswill be executed, although further initiatives to do so will be applauded. Learning objectivesResearch in the prehospital domain of emergency medicine in scarce. It is well-known that suchresearch is difficult to prepare, execute and publish in high impact journals. It is not uncommonthat a young and dedicated researcher has the intention to start an interesting study and discoverthe hard way that the study cannot be completed successfully. At the same time, such prehospitalresearch is needed to further improve the quality and effectively of current pre-hospital treatments. The pre-conference workshop on prehospital research aims at gathering around the table practitionersseeking to improve their scientific research skills and in this way are able to contribute to improvedpre-hospital emergency health care. The learning outcomes when participating in this workshopis: to create a sound prehospital research proposal.
