Memphis sure got over that in a hurry.
The Tigers were stopped on the road at Temple, but they rallied back fast to destroy a strong Tulane team to get right back in the American Athletic Conference title chase. Now they need to get through the trip to Tulsa before facing what might be the AAC West title game when SMU comes to town.
Memphis has the league’s most efficient passing game, the league’s best pass defense, and has the type of offensive balance to keep everything going against a struggling Tulsa team.
No one commits more penalties than the Golden Hurricane, there aren’t enough big plays from the defense, and the offensive line is having a rough time. The offense has stalled over the last few weeks, but it gave SMU a whale of a time in a 43-37 shootout in Dallas.
The Tulsa defense has been able to come through well at times, but it hasn’t been consistent. Memphis will balance out the offense to keep things moving, but it’ll be the ground attack that takes over in the second half to pull away to get up just enough to get out and fully focus on the Mustangs.

The #22 ranked Memphis Tigers travel to Tulsa on Friday to take on the Golden Hurricane. Kickoff will be at 8:00 PM EST on Friday, November 3rd from Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
Memphis enters this game as 12 point road favorites. Early betting has shifted the line slightly, as the Tigers originally opened at -13.5. The over/under for the game is 78 points. Click here for a full list of Week 10 betting odds and links to game previews.
The Tigers have won four consecutive games since losing to UCF at the end of September. Memphis beat up on Tulane last weekend, winning by a score of 56-26 to improve to 7-1 on the season. They are led by QB Riley Ferguson, who has already thrown for 2,500+ yards and 23 touchdowns. He has also thrown 3+ touchdown passes in four out of his past seven starts. However, Ferguson is not the only leader on this explosive Tigers offense – RB Darrell Henderson has been a big contributor for a Memphis ground attack that is currently averaging over 170 yards per game. The Tigers are certainly a balanced offense, which helps explain their extremely impressive scoring average of 42.5 points per game (8th overall). Defensively, Memphis has struggled to find any real level of success all year long. The Tigers are currently allowing an average of 33.4 points per game (104th) while also giving up an average of 468 total yards per game (117th).
Tulsa has lost six out of their last seven games and head into this match-up with a 2-7 record on the year. However, they have come extremely close to getting back into the win column for two consecutive weeks – the Golden Hurricane have dropped their last two decisions by a combined ten points. RB D’Angelo Brewer continues to have a standout season, rushing for almost 1,000 yards while adding 8 touchdowns. He is a big reason why Tulsa is currently averaging 260.2 rushing yards per game, which is currently 12th overall in the entire country. QB Chad President appears to have lost his starting job to Luke Skipper, but neither have really been all that impressive. Skipper went just 9 for 23 against SMU while also throwing an interception. He will likely get the start again for the Golden Hurricane on Friday. On the other side of the ball, Tulsa has somehow managed to be even worse defensively than Memphis. The Golden Hurricane are currently giving up an average of of 37.7 points (119th) and 550.1 yards per game (128th).
There will certainly be a ton of offensive in this game that features two of the worst defensive teams in the entire country. Tulsa is ranked pretty much dead last in every major defensive category and Memphis has only looked marginally better. The total for this game (78) is the highest on the board here in Week 10. Even with such a high number, I’m still pretty tempted to take the over. D’Angelo Brewer should have another huge performance while Ferguson will likely have another 3+ touchdown game.

This is a pretty tough spot to pick an against the spread winner, as I think the value found on either side with the current spread is fairly thin. If Memphis was playing at home, I’d probably pick the Tigers to cover with relative ease. However, despite their 2-7 record, Tulsa hasn’t looked that bad at home. They have also lost 5 out of 7 games this season by less than 10 points. Memphis has also continued to struggle defensively, which is a large reason why they have been in so many close games this season. With the exception of three blowout victories over Tulane. Southern IL and Connecticut, the Tigers have won their other 4 games by 4 points or less.
The Golden Hurricane are 9-1 ATS over their past 10 games against teams with winning records and 7-3 ATS in their past 10 games following a SU loss. Memphis has struggled against Tulsa recently, going just 2-6 ATS over their past 8 meetings. Again, I really feel that this game could go either way against the spread. However, I do feel extremely confident that there will be a ton of scoring. Last seasons meeting between Memphis and Tulsa resulted in 89 combined points, and I’m certainly expecting something similar this year.  I think the best value in this particular match-up is taking the over on 78 and enjoying what should be a constant parade to the end zone by both teams.
