Memorial NHS Students Win Regional Challenge

Three Memorial High School National Honor Society students have won the regional NHS community service challenge. The winning project -- the Memorial NHS literacy tutoring programme that provided weekly tutoring to 48 elementary school students at the Kirby Elementary feeder school -- was recognised for the specific programme design, the specific student hour investment, and the specific measured reading improvement.

The Programme

The Memorial NHS literacy tutoring programme trained 12 NHS member tutors whose weekly sessions with Kirby Elementary students produced the specific improvement in reading assessment scores tracked across the year. The specific average reading level improvement was approximately 1.3 grade levels across the 48 students who participated consistently. Senior coordinators Adaeze Okafor, Marcus Webb, and junior Priya Sharma developed the curriculum and managed the logistics the programme required.

The Recognition
