Memorial Drama Department Stages Successful Spring Production

The Memorial High School drama department staged its spring production of Once on This Island to strong reviews and near-capacity attendance across three performances this weekend. The production, directed by drama teacher Sarah Kowalski and student director Jacob Martinez, featured a cast of 22 students and a tech crew of 12 whose combined effort produced the professional quality that the Memorial drama programme has been building toward across three seasons of Kowalski oversight.

The Production

The specific production elements that the post-show responses identified: the choreography by senior Aaliyah Thompson, who developed the movement vocabulary for the show in collaboration with the director; the set design by junior Marcus Lee, who built the tropical island environment from materials the drama department acquired and students assembled; and the vocal performances across the ensemble, which the programme note identifies as the product of the specific ensemble building that the rehearsal process prioritised over individual performance development.

The Department Growth

The Memorial drama programme has grown from 15 enrolled students when Kowalski joined the programme to 34 enrolled students in the current year. The growth reflects the specific reputation that the programme has built through the productions it has mounted and the students who have gone on to pursue theatre at the college level.
