Memorial Computer Science Pathway Expansion Serves Forty-Seven Seniors

Memorial Computer Science Pathway Expansion Serves Forty-Seven Seniors

Memorial High School's expanded Computer Science pathway enrolled forty-seven seniors in its first semester, above the projections used to justify the curriculum expansion. Three tracks are available: AP Computer Science A, new AP Computer Science Principles, and an introduction to data science. The enrollment demonstrates the student interest that the expansion was designed to serve.

The Curriculum

The data science course covers statistical programming skills that the technology industry identifies as foundational. The department chair has met with University of Texas and Texas A&M representatives to ensure the pathway aligns with their incoming computer science student expectations. The alignment is confirmed. The pathway is producing the portfolio projects that college applications from technology-interested applicants increasingly request.

The Future

The class sections are now at capacity for the current academic year. The department is preparing a proposal for the next academic year that would expand capacity to accommodate projected demand.
