The German soldier Franco A. wanted to kill high-ranking politicians. He hid weapons and ammunition and had a forged identity as a Syrian asylum seeker. On Thursday, the long-awaited trial against the 32-year-old right-wing extremist began in Frankfurt am Main.
The defendant himself tells journalists that he wanted to “draw attention to the problems with migration.” With a long beard, a leather bag and a traditional Janker jacket, he walked into the court in a comfortable way. Because of terrorism, he was arrested in 2017, released after some time, and has been waiting for his trial ever since.
Franco A. was working, according to the prosecutor, to ‘jeopardize the security of the German state with severe force. ‘ He was stationed for the Bundeswehr in France, where he even wrote a far-right thesis, and led a double life there: He dressed up as a French-speaking immigrant from Damascus, painted his ruddy beard with dark shoeshine and received via the Jewish sounding name David Benjamin a lucrative asylum status in Bavaria.
Meanwhile, he traveled to Berlin and spying on politicians like Claudia Roth of the Greens. Jewish activists such as Annette Kahane and SPD Minister Heiko Maas (Abroad) were also on his death list. According to the Justice Department, after an assassination attempt, he wanted to blame asylum seekers. His lawyer takes it off as a simple costume party. Kahane said, “As a child of Holocaust survivors, it frightens me that armed Germans are back at the door.”
Franco A. contacted a large network of right-wing extremists. Their leader ‘Hannibal’ had founded the Uniter association, where soldiers, agents and reservists plotted a conspiracy. The North German branch Nordkreuz was rolled up, they too had stolen weapons and ammunition. They had even ordered body bags for politicians and journalists.
It was only when the Franco A. case became known that the Defence Minister Ursula Von der Leyen intervened. The current President of the European Commission said that the Bundeswehr had a ‘problem with its attitude’. Military intelligence had been deaf and blind, while Franco A. already described in his thesis ‘immigration as an international murder’, against which violence was justified.
At Vienna Airport, A. hid a gun. When he wanted to retrieve it again in 2017, he was arrested and started a long investigation.
