Now that the show is over, it’s time for Rauch to branch out by taking new roles.
After a decade on The Big Bang Theory , Melissa Rauch has become a household name - her squeaky voice is recognizable by almost everyone. Naturally, Melissa Rauch feels very lucky to have been given the opportunity to play such an iconic character for so many years.
Rauch told Today , “One of the benefits of having a show run this long is that we really have gotten to see these characters evolve in a very organic way. And it evolved into this show about the beauty of human potential, in a way, because these characters have had a chance to grow up, and the fact that they've all sort of become the best possible version of themselves and done things that they wouldn't necessarily have seen themselves doing before.”
When someone portrays a character, particularly a quirky one like Bernadette Rostenkowski nee Wolowitz, it can be easy for them to become typecast. Even when they aren’t auditioning for roles, people who meet them often assume that they are just like their characters. Now that the show is over, it’s time for Rauch to branch out by taking new roles. Here are 16 pics of Melissa Rauch that change the way we see The Big Bang Theory star.
This pretty blond stands only 4 foot 11 inches tall and was the shortest member of the cast. This was particularly notable when she was next to Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper), who stands 6 foot 1. Rauch joined the show to do a one-off guest spot in season three, but fans liked her, so she was soon moved up to series regular.
Because the show was already well-established by the time the character, Bernadette, was cast, Melissa Rauch was a big fan of The Big Bang Theory , even before she joined the show. In addition to her work as an actor, Melissa is a writer who often works on projects alongside her husband.
Not one to be typecast, Rauch co-wrote and starred in her own movie, The Bronze . The film, featuring a former bronze medal-winning gymnast trying to adjust to her new life as a trainer, got excellent reviews at Sundance Film Festival. Her character is a lot rawer and rougher than what we’re used to seeing on the small screen.
Remember that mom on The Office , who Pam and Jim shared a room with shortly after their daughter, Cece, was born? That mom who easily breastfed her daughter while Pam struggled...and Pam and Jim shared their typical looks of frustration? Well, that mom was Melissa Rauch. The next time you see this episode, keep an eye out for her.
Melissa Rauch had been dabbling in TV for some time before she was cast as a series regular. Another notable role was as Summer on the supernatural series, True Blood . Melissa’s first episode of True Blood was in season three - her character was dating Hoyt Fortenberry and can be seen throughout this season.
Rauch is another celebrity who wants to be real about her miscarriage experience. She uses her fame as a platform to help normalize something that is common, but often undiscussed.
She wrote an essay about this for Glamour Magazine and said, “Here is the only statement regarding my pregnancy that doesn’t make me feel like a complete fraud: ‘Melissa is expecting her first child. She is extremely overjoyed, but if she’s being honest, due to the fact that she had a miscarriage the last time she was pregnant, she’s pretty much terrified at the moment that it will happen again.”
This woman wears many hats and loves to flex her writing muscles, telling stories about women she’d like to play. In an interview by Mayim Bialik for Kveller , she said, “I’m most interested in writing the stories of flawed women (read: real), who are raw characters with layers that need to be peeled back. The attempt is always to ground their stories first, then crank up the comedy with the characters who inhabit that world.”
Much like charming a snake, working with your partner creatively can be a delicate art. Rauch said of working with her husband, “We started out as writing partners before we were ever a couple. Our first major writing project was a one-woman show called “The Miss Education of Jenna Bush.”
To keep things fair, Rauch adds, “we really have a “best idea wins” motto when we work, which I like to carry into our marriage as well…(i.e. “I think it’s the best idea for YOU to take out the garbage, honey”).
Rauch, like many actors, likes to keep in shape. She routinely practices, yoga, spinning, kickboxing, and volleyball. While she isn’t exactly an elite athlete, she did win honors as a child.
Rauch said, “I was voted MVP of my little league t-ball (child's version of baseball) team when I was six. For real, I was the only girl on the team and I was unstoppable. I got a trophy and a gift certificate to Chucky Cheese. I was a force to be reckoned with; I don't know why they insist on you playing without a tee when you get older...it's absurd. If MLB allowed steroids at one point, they should allow tees!"
While Rauch can often be seen photographed like this, by an L.A. pool, she first broke into comedy on the other coast. She worked the comedy circuit of New York City, performing at open mics places like Hamburger Harry’s (located right in Time Square) where other comedians like Zach Galifianakis started out.
These days, Rauch has makeup artists who play up her pretty eyes, but back in the day, she did it herself. Before she was waiting tables at The Cheesecake Factory for Big Bang , she was doing it in real life at Johnny Rockets, New Jersey.
She said, "I was kind of like the Rhea Perlman of the bar. I was like Carla on Cheers . People were more afraid of me. There was a point where I got a little surly. There were only so many chicken wings I could serve before losing the smile on my face."
Most people know that TBBT cast members, Mayim Bialik and Simon Helberg, have Jewish family backgrounds, but they don’t realize that Rauch does, too. When asked about the theme of her bat mitzvah, Rauch said, “(It was) Melissa’s Comedy Club” and yes – t-shirts bearing the name were included. The shirts said, “I laughed my sides off at Melissa‘s Comedy Club.”
Having a comedic background, Rauch can put on voices. The voice of Bernadette is not her own - it’s based on her own mom, Susan. Rauch just felt it worked well with Bernadette’s small but mighty character. Rauch can also do a fantastic impression of the woman who played Howard’s mom (voiced by Carol Ann Susi), who unfortunately passed away before the series ended.
Anyone who watched Big Bang knows that they played up Penny’s looks and try to downplay the assets of the other female characters. When we see Rauch without her glasses and overly 'little girl-style' clothing, it’s quickly apparent what a knockout she is... when she’s not pretending to be Mrs. Wolowitz.
Looking like she stepped out of a Britney Spears video, Rauch portrayed a very different image than we're all used to. It’s no wonder Rauch ranked at number three on The Richest's list of 15 female ‘nerdy’ characters who are actually super-hot. Rauch flexed her photogenic appeal when she posed for magazines like Maxim .
Rauch has a sense of confidence that most people don’t equate with her small stature. She had early success with a one-woman show, “The Miseducation of Jenna Bush”, where she performed for sold-out audiences and received high praise. While, it seems she’s taking a hiatus from the spotlight right now, after years on Big Bang , we can’t wait to see what she does next.
