"It was just mind-boggling. It made no sense at all," Melanie Addie said about learning that her now ex-husband James was planning to illegally marry another woman and that the woman was dead.
MONROE COUNTY, Mo. -- It's been three years since police officers showed up at Melanie Addie's front door and dropped two bombshells on her at once: Not only did her now ex-husband of 23 years have a fiancee he was planning to marry, but that the woman had just been murdered.
"It was just mind-boggling. It made no sense at all," Melanie Addie told "20/20." "It didn't seem right. This was not my life."
James Addie, 56, was convicted in 2021 of first-degree murder and armed criminal action for the death of 35-year-old Molly Watson. He was sentenced in July to life in prison without parole plus 10 years.
Investigators said James Addie was in a seven-year relationship with Watson and was engaged to marry her two days after he killed her. Her body was found outside of her car on a rural road in Monroe County, Missouri, with a single gunshot wound to the back of her head, according to authorities.
James Addie has long maintained his innocence, but his ex-wife said she believes he is capable of murder.
"He was a pretty selfish person ... He could be controlling and intimidating ... it could be challenging," Melanie Addie said. "It just seemed like something he would do to fix a problem."
Melanie Addie said she never suspected her husband was having an affair and thought her ex-husband was dedicated to his family. The couple has two children, a daughter, Emma, and a son, Ben. Melanie Addie worked as a teacher's assistant while James Addie worked as a corrections officer.
"He seemed the same all the time," Melanie Addie said. "He would get off work at 3 [ p.m. ] ... and usually he would get home at 5 and I would say, 'Why are you always so late?'... and that would be an argument. He didn't want to tell me anything."
At one point, Melanie Addie said her ex-husband went off on trips. One was to Florida that she said James Addie told her was for work, and one was a trip to Mexico that she said he told her was a getaway with friends.
"I never really knew his work friends... [ so it ] seems plausible," she said.
On April 27, 2018, everything seemed normal, Melanie Addie said, and her husband "seemed like he always did."
"About seven o'clock, he came into the living room where I was and said he was going to a friend's house," she said.
Melanie Addie said she went to bed and woke up at 2 a.m. to the sound of James Addie snoring next to her. She said she did what she always does, which is get up and move to the couch. About 30 minutes later, Melanie Addie said she saw police lights outside.
A few weeks after his arrest, Melanie Addie filed for divorce.
"He had always been very hard on me about how a wife should act and how life should be, and then he did this. He had an affair, and that's OK? No. We were done," she said.
Melanie Addie decided to search the house for any evidence of her husband's affair. She said she found photos of James Addie and Watson together at Disney World in Florida in a lofted storage area of their garage.
She said she asked herself over and over how she could have missed the affair.
"I guess because I wasn't supposed to see it," Melanie Addie said.
Melanie Addie said she visited him in jail about a week after his arrest.
" [ He said ] he's very sorry for the affair, but he insists that he was not the killer," she said. "I looked at him as someone I didn't want back."
At trial, prosecutors presented a theory for James Addie's motive for killing Watson. They argued he had told her Melanie Addie was his ex-wife and had died in a car accident and she had discovered that wasn't true.
"Forensic searches of Molly's phones indicated that the day before she was murdered, she was looking for Melanie Addie's obituary," prosecutor Talley Smith said.
Melanie Addie was called to testify against Addie at his trial, which she said was "just horrible."
"You don't want to be there. I don't want to be in a position where I'm hurting him," she said.
James Addie did not take the stand at his trial, but read a statement in court at his sentencing, in which he read a love letter to the woman he had been convicted of killing. He also asked for a new trial, claiming his defense attorney was ineffective and didn't present all of the evidence in support of his case.
"There is no way that I could have done this crime," he told the court. "The only one I hold at fault in this entire process is my attorney because he had the means and he had the ability to present my case and he failed to do it whenever I asked him."
He is currently working to appeal his conviction.

Tuesday’s episode of Days of our Lives, pulled at the heartstrings as Melanie (Molly Burnett) and Brady (Eric Martsolf) shared an emotional farewell, after Melanie is basically forced to leave Salem thanks to Theresa (Jen Lilley) and wanting to give Brady time with his newly found son, Tate.
The final moments were beautifully played by Daytime Emmy winner Eric Martsolf and Molly Burnett, who wrapped up her on-screen return after a six-month return to the NBC soap opera. Throughout the rest of the episode, Melanie shed some tears saying goodbye to her father Daniel (Shawn Christian), Nicole (Arianne Zucker) and grandmother Maggie (Suzanne Rogers).
Burnett tweeted to all her fans and followers at the conclusion of yesterday’s DAYS episode: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me come into your living rooms and cause a little trouble the last 6 months. Days will always be my first home and I’m so thankful for everyone there, and all of you!! And I can’t wait to share what’s next!”

I agree with you Mo, Molly Burnett is a wonderful actress. I am going to miss her so much. Molly Burnett only signed a 6 month contract. Don’t worry Mo, she will be back in the future.
I love the actress and character, but these scenes were ridiculous and poorly written. The premise was foolish and all the emotions drug on and on throughout endless goodbyes.
I agree, I saw her scenes with Brady yesterday and I thought “didn’t she leave Friday?”
I agree with Anne, in all actuality no one is so “self-sacrificing” that they would relinquish Brady so easily or any beloved person. There were ways that they could have worked out visitation rights and all that jazz. Theresa isn’t really “holding all the cards” unless they allow her to.

I quite frankly don’t get the excitement over the Melanie character. She is quirky and not always in a good way. I have to say she acted the hell out of the goodbye scenes but I just don’t get the hoopla over her. Very glad they are moving on without her and now I get to dance in aerobic bliss over the departure of Serena and Xander. I can’t wait for both of those pouty petes to leave the scenery. I am going to miss Melanie even though she often needed to center herself so she wasn’t coming off so flakey, and who I always wanted to sit her down and brush her hair. Melanie was good FOR Brady, something the self-destructive Theresa is not, and without a personality/soul transplant never will be.
I wish the actress the best, but damn but I wish she wasn’t leaving the show.
Very well said. I wish Melanie had recorded her final conversation with Theresa so that Brady could use it in his fight for custody of Tate. Theresa is nothing but a selfish, hateful user. I pity baby Tate’s future with her.
I really like Molly and on occasion Melanie, but this return has been awful! From lame, uninspired and contrived start to sappy, forced and rushed middle (her romance with Brady that never should have been) to ridiculous and unbelievable finish. She should have been around to cause trouble and raise a little hell post Sami exit, not stick her nose in everyone’s business and develop an unrealistic romance with a totally mismatched Brady. I am going to miss Melanie (and Molly). Yes, she had a loosey, goosey acting style that seemed to make audiences choose sides, but I actually loved it. It felt sort of like she was doing improv most of the time, which is sometimes a relief with some of her co-workers line readings. And while I wasn’t initially on board with her relationship with Brady, I came to really like it and wished there would have been more time to explore it.
Me too, though if it was not meant to be with Brady, I would have liked to seen her with Chad.
Abigail is soooooooooooooooo boring. (This) Chad and Melanie could have been fun.
Melanie is good for Brady and vice versa. These last few months are the most I have enjoyed Melanie because of her relationship with Brady. She is also Theresa’s “six bit change” (foil) like no other. The acting chemistry between Molly and Jen Lilly is as good as the chemistry between Molly and Eric Martsolf. The Melanie-Brady-Theresa story is wired for old school drama that can last for years to come. I hope the Days producers and writers hold on to it because this storyline is a winner like we haven’t seen on Days in a long time!
Melanie grew on me over time. At first I couldn’t grasp who she was and what she was about. Then I got her as time went on. I thought she was pretty damn cool. I wish she hadn’t left days as her character added this different personality that we never see in anyone else. Silly,fun and was the best for Brady! I’m sick of Theresa and hope she gets what she deserves. Kinda sounded like victor had something up his sleeve?

I love Molly but hated the ludicrous story ending. And once again Brady has lost a love for the 100th time…I’m tired of it. And if for some reason they have Brady forgive and fall in love with Theresa I’ll stop watching the show.
Molly has created a unique character on DOOL. I will miss the quirky tenderness of Melanie Jonas. Hopefully, the actress and character will return in the near future. Days needs compelling female characters in her age range. Best wishes Molly!
I have never really seen the “it” factor in this character-she’s too over the top in her attempts to be cute, and cuddly which I think comes across as extremely immature. There’s no complexity; and I think that her younger brother Parker has more depth and maturity. The Brady/Melanie “romance” fell lackluster and my only hope is that Melanie will take that spoiled rotten, narcissistic, nasty Theresa with her and drop her off the face of the Earth-UGH! Its unfortunate that “Melanie’s” character has to leave. It was finally great to see Brady with someone good. Hopefully she will be asked to return.

Days of our Lives stars Galen Gering (Rafe) and Arianne Zucker (Nicole) are the next cast members to share a message to fans of the beloved soap opera about their move to Peacock.

The third season of ABC’s Big Sky which focuses on the criminal under belly of Montana, has some new twists and a new story that kicks off on September 21st (10 pm ET/9 pm CT).
In Big Sky: Deadly Trails , Reba McEntire joins the cast as the villainess Sunny Barnes, who is a leader of backcountry trips with some deadly consequences for the camping customers.
That brings into the fold series main characters and stars: private detective Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury), undersheriff Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick) and the newly appointed sheriff Beau Arlen played by former Days of our Lives and Supernatural star, Jensen Ackles.
Now, this trio is up against it to solve a mystery where no camper can be trusted and danger lurks all around them.
Days of our Lives’ Zach Tinker (Sonny Kiriakis) plays Mark in the season opener, and from the Big Sky: Deadly Trails premiere trailer, things don’t look so good for this guy!
