At work: '5-4-3-2-1—send the scary email.'

At the gym: '5-4-3-2-1—lace up my sneakers.'

With her kids: '5-4-3-2-1—stay calm and listen.'

Each time, the rule short-circuited her brain’s excuses. But the real test came during a live TV interview. The host smirked, 'So you’re saying counting like a kid fixes adult problems?'

Mel grinned. 'No. It’s not the counting—it’s the action that follows. Courage isn’t a feeling; it’s what you do despite the fear.'
