We explore the leaked photo phenomenon that has become so prevalent in pop culture today.
As of 2017, it may be time to officially declare privacy dead. With the invention of the internet, cellular phones, and various social media platforms, getting a hold of someone's information is seemingly easier than ever.
It may not be fair, but keeping private e-mails or images on one's computer or cell phone is a risky proposition these days. Sadly, the world is full of people who are looking to exploit someone's private content for profit or in some cases simply their own amusement.
That being said, there is no excuse for stealing someone's intimate photos of themselves and distributing them to the world.
If you are a celebrity or high-profile athlete you may be even more susceptible to hackers looking to make a quick buck off of your private images.
However, there are a few athletes out there who may have sent some pics in which the receiving party didn't necessarily appreciate.
In this piece, we will explore the leaked photo phenomenon that has become so prevalent in pop culture today. To this end, we will take a look at 15 athletes who had their private photos leaked.
As you will see, many of these athletes are clearly victims who were wronged. On the other hand, we will also take a look at some instances where some sports stars may have been flirting with disaster.
You may be shocked and amazed at some of the names you will find on our list.
Hope Solo is among the most recognized female soccer players in the world. The goalkeeper is a World Cup champion and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. The native of Richland, Washington was a part of the United States women's national soccer team for almost 16 years.
Solo has also received her fair share of negative publicity stemming from allegations that she was involved in a domestic dispute with her husband, former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens. She was even suspended by the league for calling Sweden's soccer team "a bunch of cowards" after they eliminated the United States from the Olympic games back in 2016. And in 2014, there was the infamous iCloud celebrity photo leak involving Solo and several other big name celebrities. The leak featured several explicit images of the soccer star. There may be some people who don't care for Hope Solo, but this was a clear violation of her privacy that should be viewed unfavorably.
Colby Daniel Lopez is a professional wrestler who is better known by his ring name, Seth Rollins. He is currently signed with World Wrestling Entertainment. During his time with the company, he has held the World Heavyweight Championship on two separate occasions. Rollins was also a member of the famous wrestling stable known as The Shield.
Apparently, nude photos featuring Seth Rollins and female wrestler Zahra Schreiber (who was Rollins's ex-girlfriend) appeared on social media, back in early-2015. The incident prompted the likely embarrassed former champ to post an apology on twitter; "I would like to apologize to all the WWE fans and my family and friends for private photographs that were distributed without my consent." The incident has been largely forgotten and Seth Rollins has gone on to have a lot of success with WWE.
McKayla Maroney is a retired gymnast who was a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team. Maroney and her four American teammates were known as the Fierce Five. The Fierce Five captured team gold for the United States in London, making Maroney an Olympic gold medalist. Her specialty was the vault an event for which she won an individual silver medal; this also took place at the 2012 Games. During the silver medal ceremony, Maroney made her "not impressed" face which became an internet sensation and the subject of countless internet memes.
Maroney was another victim of the 2014 iCloud leaks, which resulted in revealing photos of the Olympian being shared with the public. However, according to E! Online News , Maroney's lawyer claimed she was underage when the photos were taken, which fortunately resulted in websites removing the images.
Justin Verlander is a starting a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. He won the American League Cy Young Award in 2011. Moreover, the right-hander is a six-time All-Star and led the American League in strikeouts on four separate occasions. The Tigers star is also currently engaged to supermodel Kate Upton.
Both Justin Verlander and Kate Upton were victims of 2014 iCloud leaks. The leaks featured nude images of the celebrity couple together. It's possible that they were targeting Upton and Verlander was simply a bystander, but it is likely that we will never know for certain. When asked about the incident Verlander told ESPN; "I'm not going to comment on my personal life. I never have and I never plan on it." The iCloud leaks even prompted an FBI investigation.
Ashley Elizabeth Fliehr is known professionally as Charlotte Flair. She is a professional wrestler for World Wrestling Entertainment. Flair has won the Raw Women's Championship on four separate occasions. She is also the daughter of wrestling legend "Nature Boy" Ric Flair.
In May of 2017, revealing photos of the former champ made their way onto the internet. After the incident became public, Charlotte Flair took to Twitter and wrote;“Private photos of mine were stolen and shared publicly without my consent. These images must be removed from the Internet immediately.” However, it appears the tweet has since been deleted. While some stars have opted to keep a low profile after these types of instances, Flair has remained active on social media and continues to appear on WWE television. It looks like its business as usual for the second generation star, which is good news for wrestling fans.
Miesha Tate is a retired mixed martial artist who is best-known as a competitor for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. During her time in the organization, she captured the UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship by defeating Holly Holm back in March of 2016. Her feud with fellow Bantamweight fighter Ronda Rousey is arguably the biggest rivalry in the history of women's MMA. She currently works as an MMA commentator for FS1.
Back in 2014, revealing images of Tate allegedly became available on the internet. According to a 2014 MMA Mania article, hackers were trying to sell the images for around $350 each. It's unclear if the photos were actually Tate, so it could be just some sleazy hackers trying to make a buck with altered images. It would probably serve the potential buyers right if that were the case.
The 6-foot-4 native of Baltimore, Maryland is an icon is the sport of competitive swimming. Michael Phelps has won an impressive 28 Olympic medals, more than anyone who has ever competed in the prestigious games. He holds world records in several swimming events including the 400-meter individual medley.
Unlike many of the other athletes on our list, Phelps leaked images do not involve any sort of nudity. Way back in 2009, a photo surfaced on the Olympian smoking out of a bong, an instrument often associated with marijuana use. It was taken during a party he attended at the University of South Carolina. This resulted in a three-month suspension for the swimming star. Phelps would go on to make a public apology for the incident.
Misty May-Treanor is one of most accomplished beach volleyball players to have ever played the game. Along with her teammate Kerri Walsh Jennings she was able to win Olympic gold on three separate occasions. Treanor had 112 individual championship wins, prior to retiring from the sport in August of 2012, after winning her final Olympic gold medal in London.
May-Treanor was also allegedly hacked back in 2014. There were said to be private images of the volleyball star on the internet. However, the Olympian's rep denied the photos were authentic and told TMZ a few years back "I reviewed the image with Misty and it is clear that it is a bad Photoshop job." The images apparently featured tattoos similar to Treanor's but those can be Photoshopped in as well. I guess it comes down to who you trust more; an Olympic gold medalist or someone who claims to have stolen her explicit photos?
Roy Jones Jr. is one of the most accomplished boxers of his era. He has held world titles in several divisions which lead to him being named Fighter of the Decade for the 1990s by the Boxing Writers Association of America. At 48 years of age, Jones still competes and recently defeated Bobby Gunn for the WBF cruiserweight title last February.
Apparently, Jones was sending nude photographs of himself to a female boxer named Stacey Reile back in 2014. It would appear that Jones did something to upset the female boxer, who decided to post his images on Instagram. In this instance, Roy Jones Jr. reminds us why sometimes it's best to keep our private photos to ourselves...or at least be sure to stay on really good terms with the folks we send them to.
Brett Favre is a retired football player who is best-known for playing quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. During his career, Favre threw for over 70,000 yards and tossed over 500 touchdown passes. He also helped the Packers win Super Bowl XXXI back in 1997. In 2016, Brett Favre has inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In 2010, allegations surfaced that Brett Favre had sent inappropriate messages and images to New York Jets television personality Jenn Sterger. The images in question, of course, found their way online. When the investigation was complete, it could not be proven for certain that the images came from Favre. While there was no concrete evidence linking him to the images, the star quarterback was fined $50,000 for failing to cooperate with the investigation.
Saraya-Jade Bevis is a professional wrestler who works for World Wrestling Entertainment and performs under the ring name Paige. At the age of 21, Paige became the youngest female champion in WWE history. The native of Norwich, England has been wrestling since she was just 13 years old. The 24-year-old is currently out of action due to injury.
Back in March of this year, several explicit images of the WWE star were leaked to the public without her consent. In this instance, there were both photos and videos involving the former Women's Champion and at least two other wrestlers. Hopefully, Paige will be able to return from injury soon and put the entire incident behind her. And if you would like to read more about Paige then take a look at Top 15 Hottest Brunettes In Wrestling History .
Martellus Bennett in a professional football player who currently plays tight end in the National Football League. Last season Bennett was a member of the New England Patriots team that wound up winning the Super Bowl via a miraculous comeback in February of 2017. He was selected to participate in the Pro Bowl in 2014 and has caught 30 touchdown passes throughout the course of his career. He recently signed a deal to play with the Green Bay Packers this offseason.
Apparently, Bennett had taken some nude images that wound up on his (then) girlfriend's phone. He was allegedly unfaithful to said girlfriend and as a result, his photos wound up being leaked to the public. This had to be an embarrassing incident for the NFL star.
Chad Johnson (or Chad Ochocinco if you prefer) was a wide receiver in the National Football League. He has played for several teams during his career, though he is probably best remembered by NFL fans as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals. Johnson is a six-time Pro Bowler who led the NFL in receiving yards back in 2006. He even played one game for the Monterrey Fundidores (a team based in Mexico) in 2017.
The former NFL standout has had several off-the-field issues and legal problems. Furthermore, he also allegedly had an explicit video and some revealing photos leaked. According to TMZ , he even went so far as to try in get the FBI involved in finding out how the video has leaked. Chad Johnson remains one of the most controversial athletes in sports, despite being semi-retired.
Santonio Holmes Jr. is a retired wide receiver who previously played in the National Football League. The former 1st-round draft choice accumulated over 6,000 receiving yards throughout the course of his career. He is probably best-remembered for being named MVP of Super Bowl XLIII, as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers back in 2009. In college, he was a member of the Ohio State Buckeyes team that won the national title in 2002.
In 2008, a revealing photo of Holmes posing in the shower was leaked. Apparently, according to Deadspin , the photo was found on a site that is used for females to discuss their personal relations. The incident was no doubt embarrassing for both Holmes and the National Football League.
Paul George plays small forward in the National Basketball Association for the Indiana Pacers. He is a four-time All-Star who was named the NBA's Most Improved Player in 2013. He also participated in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, which were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The story surrounding George's leaked nude images is a bit bizarre. A false report came out that he was the victim of a catfish and sent revealing images to an individual he didn't know personally. However, Paul George eventually set the record straight by confirming he knew the person the photos were ultimately sent to. Unfortunately for George, that person decided to post the images on the internet. Sending revealing photos to someone in 2017 is a risky proposition indeed, especially if you're famous.

Her career certainly had its ups and downs, but there was rarely a dull moment when Miesha Tate was competing in the Octagon.
Few fighters in the game of mixed martial arts have been able to achieve the level of notoriety that the former UFC Women’s Bantam Weight Champion Miesha Tate has.
She didn’t have the Olympic pedigree of a Ronda Rousey or the elite boxing skills of a Holly Holm. However, her never-say-die attitude, along with the ability to absorb damage and keep coming earned her the respect of her peers as well as MMA fans around the world.
Tate was born in Tacoma, Washington which is where she first fell in love with the sport of wrestling. In fact, Tate would go on to win the state championship her senior year at Franklin Pierce High School.
Her first experience with mixed martial arts came in college while she was attending Central Washington University. It was there she joined her first MMA club and began a journey that ended with her becoming one of the most recognized names in the sport.
Her career certainly had its ups and downs, but there was rarely a dull moment when Miesha Tate was competing in the Octagon.
Tate’s abrupt retirement from the sport in November of 2016 was surprising. While fans may never see Tate compete in the octagon again, they can still relive all the highlights (and the lowlights) as we take a look at 8 photos Miesha Tate wants you to see and 7 she doesn’t.
One of Miesha Tate's best moments outside of the cage came back in 2013. That was the year that the former UFC Champion appeared on the cover of Fitness Gurls magazine. The cover also featured a caption which proclaimed that Miesha Tate is “the most beautiful woman in MMA.” After seeing photos like the one above it’s difficult to argue with their assessment.
For folks out there who are wondering how Tate manages to stay in such great shape, it’s actually a combination of several different exercises. In an interview with FitnessGurls.com, she had the following tip for those out there are trying to get in shape; “Find something you enjoy doing whether it's hiking, biking, cardio kickboxing, jogging or even BJJ, so you don’t lose interest.”
Miesha Tate’s infamous rivalry with Ronda Rousey began back in 2012 while both women were competing in the promotion known as Strikeforce. Tate, who was the Strikeforce Champion at the time, was originally supposed to fight Bantamweight mainstay Sara Kaufman for the belt. However, the promotion opted to go with Rouse
