An eight-year-old boy was found bleeding hard from his throat at a Motel 6 in St. George, Utah earlier this week. Now, authorities have charged the injured child’s mother with attempted murder.
Megan Michelle Stewart , 28, also stands accused of child abuse and violating a protective order that was issued for the child in question.
“I had to,” the defendant told police, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by the St. George News which referred to the attack on the boy. Stewart allegedly said she needed to stab her child for “Satan” and/or “Mother Mary.” She also allegedly wished for her son to die after officers said he was being operated on in a nearby hospital.
According to authorities, the boy suffered “multiple neck lacerations” from the scissors. He is currently recuperating in the St. George Regional Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
According to the St. George Police Department , officers responded to reports of a child with “potentially life threatening injuries from an assault” and began to render aid immediately upon arrival.
Court documents cited by local CBS affiliate KUTV allege that motel staff made the call when they saw the child running through an alley screaming for help and shouting that his mother was “trying to suffocate him” at around 9:00 that same morning.
Stewart was allegedly seen closely following the boy and telling staff he had just been disciplined before the two returned to their room.
“Don’t worry, he just got his butt whooped,” the mother allegedly told a female employee, the affidavit alleges.
Two hours after that, police said a housekeeper witnessed the child outside the motel room again, reiterating to anyone who would listen that his mom wanted to “kill him.” The housekeeper then told the boy to get back in his room before contacting the clerk who dialed 911.
The clerk then made their way to the room and entered after finding the door open. The boy was lying on the bed. The room stained red with blood all over. Noting the amount of blood and the boy’s purple complexion, the clerk told police she initially thought he was dead.
The hotel manager reportedly told police that Stewart left and advised the authorities of the direction she was walking. The mother-turned-defendant was arrested a short time later without incident, police say, whereupon she confessed to the religious-themed attack.
Police say she admitted to trying to suffocate her son with a pillow before using the scissors. When further pressed as to why she initially said she “had to” kill the boy, she allegedly told police she was “high.”
Stewart made an initial court appearance on Friday afternoon before 5th District Court Judge Jeffrey Wilcox . She was ordered held without bail and reportedly said that she understood the charges against her. The defendant was also appointed a public defender. Her next court appearance is currently slated for Sept. 2.

A 21-year-old woman faces murder charges nine months after her boyfriend was found naked with his throat slashed in a forest.

Megan Shaffer, of Carpendale, West Virginia, was charged on Thursday with second-degree murder, manslaughter and assisted suicide in the death of her 24-year-old boyfriend Alexander Stevens, court records show.

Stevens, of Frostburg, was found in the Savage River State Forest with a cat in a cage nearby, The Cumberland Times-News reports.

Shaffer originally claimed that Stevens had fallen to his death off a cliff.

Stevens’ death was ruled a homicide in March and Garret County State’s Attorney Lisa Thayer Welch announced the charges against Shaffer at a Thursday news conference, according to the newspaper.

Shaffer and Stevens were reported missing in the forest on Jan. 4, Welch said, according to the Times-News .

“While efforts were underway by Natural Resources Police and other emergency responders to locate the pair, Shaffer made a ‘911’ call to authorities to provider her location,” Welch reportedly added in the statement.

“With the assistance of the MSP helicopter, Stevens’s body was located in the State Forest a short while later.”

Shaffer told authorities that she and Stevens hiked to an overlook in the forest on the night of Jan. 3 and claimed that Stevens fell from the cliff, the Associated Press reports. She told police that she thought Stevens died after the 33-foot fall and she left him there.

Stevens was found with several broken bones, but his throat had been deeply cut more than once, according to the AP.

Stevens’ father, Jay, told police that although his son had been acting differently in recent years, he didn’t think Stevens was suicidal.

“He’d grown his hair longer, was reading about religions, thinking about his place in society,” Jay said, according to the AP, which cited court records. “I never, never, ever, ever thought that he was suicidal. I know my son. He had all these plans to do things.

Stevens opened a “transfer on death” account to Shaffer of more than $188,000, the AP reports. Stevens’ father was able to stop the transfer with a judge’s approval.

Shaffer’s attorney, Stephen Tully, did not immediately respond to a request for comment form PEOPLE. She is being held at the Garrett County Detention Center and it is unclear whether she has entered a plea.

The Duchess of Sussex showed signs that she 'doesn't like being told she's not the only powerful woman' during Fortune's virtual summit, a body language expert has claimed.
Meghan Markle, 39, who spoke from the $14 million Santa Barbara home she shares with husband Prince Harry and their one-year-old son Archie last Tuesday, claimed she pays no mind to public 'flattery or criticism' - while also hitting out at the media for 'misinterpreting' remarks she has made in order to make them sound more 'controversial' or 'inflammatory'.
However, speaking to The Mirror , body language expert Bruce Durham believes that not all aspects of the royal's interview were authentic.
He pinpoints the exact moment he feels the Duchess shows signs of being uncomfortable - and puts it down to the moment Fortune senior editor Ellen McGirt tells her she's 'not the only powerful woman involved in this equation'.
Meghan Markle, 39, showed signs that she 'doesn't like being told she's not the only powerful woman' during Fortune's virtual summit, a body expert has claimed
The body language expert claimed the Duchess gives away several key signs to suggest that her 'ego is raging' - including brushing her hair, giving eye blocks and a tightening of the throat
'She doesn't receive it like that, she receives it as a threat,' he explained. 'Up until then the interviewer is still heaping praise on Meghan.'
He went on to say that she gives away several key signs to suggest that her 'ego is raging' - including brushing her hair in a bid to 'reframe' herself to look like a powerful woman.
He added: 'Lots of eye blocks, she wants to be the person in the room. Watch her throat, tightening of the throat, it's an animalistic reaction. She does not like hearing she's not the only powerful equation.'
Bruce claims another sign that Meghan is trying to highlight her authenticity is by repeating the word 'authentic' on a number of occasions.
During the interview, Meghan also insisted she does not actually focus on anything written about her - be it negative or positive - turning to a quote from artist Georgia O'Keeffe to express her views about 'flattery and criticism'.
'I have already settled it for myself so flattery and criticism go down the same drain and I am quite free,' she quoted, while adding her own sentiments, claiming that she feels 'liberated' from opinions about her.
While speaking to runners ahead of their marathon in LA, Harry asked if they run a 26.2mile route 'before actually running a marathon' as part of their training
'And the moment you are able to be liberated from all these other opinions of what you know to be true, then I think it's just very easy to just live with peace and live with authenticity,' she said. 'And that is how I choose to move through the world.'
However, the body language expert claims the Duchess of Sussex shows negativity by offering a 'shrug of the lips' and constantly looking down.
Bruce adds that by explaining how she has received criticism, the royal is attempting to suggest she isn't controversial.
The comments come after another body language expert, Judi James, spoke to The Express and claimed that Prince Harry employed 'guru-style' body language and 'waggled his hands' when he met LA runners on Saturday.
Ahead of the race, the Duke of Sussex wished runners competing across the globe good luck and praised participants for providing a 'lifeline' for vulnerable people amid the pandemic by raising money for various charities.
The Duke of Sussex then asks who the runners are running for. One replies: 'I'm running for my mother-in-law too and my mom. My mom just had a stroke last year too so she's kind of recovering. And my mother-in-law is battling brain cancer'
The father-of-one - who is also patron of the London Marathon Charitable Trust - posed with runners who were starting off in a much sunnier Los Angeles park.
However, Judi commented that while it was for a great cause, the 'arrangement' of Prince Harry's floor-seating instead gives the impression of a 'guru-style teaching session.'
She said: 'The arrangement of this floor-seating meeting with some inspirational marathon runners in LA has been positioned in a way that makes it look rather as though our ex-pat prince with his waggling hands, pointing and his floor chops, is giving a guru-style teaching session to a small group of followers.'
However, she added that while he portrays some of his mother, late Princess Diana's charm and may have chosen the floor in a bid to look 'friendly and chatty,' he shows elements of feeling 'awkward.'
Judi added: 'But with the cameras were circling here the awkward pose makes him look several steps outside his comfort zone.'
