Meersblomme Waregem Transforms Floristry with Eco-Friendly Designs

Waregem, Belgium — In a quiet storefront along the city’s cobbled lanes, Meersblomme is rewriting floristry with eco-friendly designs that put sustainability at the center of every bouquet. The shop, long known for its seasonal arrangements, now emphasizes local sourcing, minimal waste, and reusable materials as core parts of its craft.

Owner Nina Meers explains the shift: 'We design with the life of the arrangement in mind, not just the moment it’s handed over. That means choosing stems from nearby growers, using compostable packaging, and finding ways to reuse vessels.' The store partners with Belgian growers within roughly a 100-kilometer radius, cutting transport emissions and supporting regional farms while ensuring peak freshness.

Meersblomme has introduced a deposit system for vases, encourages customers to bring back containers for refurbishment, and favors paper-based wrapping and natural fibers over plastic. Some designs incorporate dried botanicals and plantable seed papers so remnants could become new blooms in time.

Local customers notice. 'I love the idea of flowers that travel less and leave less waste,' says regular shopper Elise De Vries. Community workshops on composting and vase-care have drawn neighbors into the shop, turning floristry into a neighborhood conversation about sustainability.
