I’m a genius. No really, a tested and certified genius. My mother insisted the school test me in the fourth grade when they couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t doing well. I wasn’t doing my homework, I didn’t put any effort into the work I did turn in, and my test scores sucked. I didn’t seem to be dyslexic and I didn’t respond to the Special Ed program they put me in, so trying to think what else they could do, my mother pushed the school to test my IQ. It was high. Really high. Now, all those times I sneaked out of class to hang out between the shelves of books in the “Media Center”, when I was teaching myself about SCUBA diving (because I was interested in deep-sea research), or rocketry and astronomy (because they are cool), or ancient mythology and the philosophy of mystery religions (because I wanted to create better AD&D adventures), and human biology and psychology (because I looked up and happened to be sitting in the Biology section and was next to a collection of works by Freud, Jung, Carlson, Maslow, Skinner and others), have all become my official curricula.
Mr. Shill, my Calculus teacher, and Ms. Dermis, my Physics teacher, are my advisers. Because they are the only ones who seem to understand that I’m engaged in “real” learning, they are responsible for assessing and awarding me credit for it.
My older sister and I are both seniors this year, even though she’s over a year older. I just have to complete my Senior Project and we will both be going to Cornell. I toured the campus and it was way more interesting than Harvard or Yale, for an Ivy League. I agreed with Cecelia, it seemed less snobby and more into doing real stuff.
My Senior Project is in advertising. It’s fun to watch the faces of the people who know me when they ask what I’ll be studying at Cornell. They expect me to say “Mathematics” or “Theoretical Physics” or even “Computer Science”, but I also love art and am very talented with design. When I tell them advertising, their faces just drop before transforming into a caricature of confusion. They don’t get it.
The human mind is one of the last frontiers and a degree in Marketing and Communications covers all the above disciplines plus human psychology. Advertisers are at the forefront of mental and emotional studies. They basically control how the world thinks, and that’s real power. I won’t bore you with details about the millions top ad execs make. I care, only in as much as money makes getting things easier. I don’t care about status, or security, or wealth for wealth’s sake. I do expect to make enough to be able to indulge my interests, that’s all that matters.
Back to my project. I am designing and marketing a new line of school clothes. I know, sounds lame, right? But, this project includes research into the effects school uniforms have on learning and also on the merchandising to be sold on the new school streaming television channel, which I also will be developing.
Now do I have your interest? No? Let me open your eyes.
Every year, Administration throws around the idea of uniforms for students. I hope to provide incontrovertible proof as to the effectiveness of school uniforms for promoting higher academic performance. NOW, doesn’t that sound more interesting? Still kinda lame?!
Well, because I’m trying to show the benefits of something the school administration already is in favor of, I had no problem getting approved. However, I have some personal goals that I’ve included in my project that I haven’t mentioned to my advisers. I’m challenging myself to achieve the complete abandonment of the school dress code, other than the uniform. No more measuring skirt lengths or sending kids home because they have holes in their jeans. No silly requirements for undergarments that no one should be looking at anyhow, much less inspecting for. No worries about inappropriate messages or colors or material or styles. Just a basic requirement to wear the school uniform.
This extends to the faculty and staff, because the real challenge I am seeing for myself is to sell them, especially Ms. Dermis, one of the most stacked and curvaceous and definitely the best looking teacher in the school, on the practice of teaching class in the nude. Yep, I’m going to fundamentally change a significant cultural value in my adviser, and indeed, the whole school faculty and staff.
There’s another, even more private goal. This is a difficult one, but I have ready access to the full spectrum of media control, so maybe not as hard. Ready to hear it? I warned you.
I am going to adjust my mother and sister Cecilia’s sense of family values to the point that my mother voluntarily decides to teach my sister and me about sex. Specifically, she’s going to teach my sister how to suck my cock. I’m going to do this through all the same techniques used in advertising.
Interested NOW? Suddenly the ad industry doesn’t sound so lame, right? Of course, I have to be successful before you’ll believe I can do it. So let me walk you through.
Really, I know you won’t believe me, but sex is not my motivation. I just want a real challenge to see if I can cause radical change in people’s behaviors and values. Admittedly, I am an adolescent boy, with all the adolescent drives that go along with that. Being a genius doesn’t mean I am not interested in sex or girls. I fully expect to enjoy the outcomes as much as the next guy, but that isn’t why I chose this challenge. I have no particular interest in incest or even in my teacher. All three, Ms. Dermis, my sister and my mother, are gorgeous and I wouldn’t kick any one of them out of bed. They are simply the easiest to reach with my planned ad campaign.
It will definitely take a full, longitudinal campaign. One doesn’t change such fundamental attitudes in such a radical fashion overnight.
I have actually been working on this project for over a year. I’ve laid the foundation and installed much of the infrastructure. I got Internet-based television and streaming radio for our house, for example. I even managed to convince all of my teachers and the principle, Mrs. Zaftig, along with the vice principle, Ms. Fellaicceo, and their administration assistant, Miss Cunny, of the benefits of Internet streaming. I memorized all their email addresses and the IP addresses of each of their LAN routers as I installed them, or upgraded them, over the last year. Cool, huh?
This is my media access into their lives. I’ve been monitoring their use of media and I have a very well laid plan. Mom watches three shows. One is a cooking and life-help talk show. This is perfect because it is the model of the conservative normal. If you want to know what’s wholesome and acceptable, this show will tell you what it is. My mother is an avid follower of their programming. The second show is a morning exercise and health show. Again, perfect, it is filled with unquestionable facts about health and a healthy lifestyle. It teaches its viewers about the latest trends in Healthcare and exercise. If it’s on their show, you can bet it has already been embraced by a large popular audience. The last show is a Christian-based talent and evangelical show called ‘God Given Talent’, abbreviated to GGT. You can imagine the type of products they’re marketing to their audience. They are the standard for modern family friendly entertainment. Also, Mom listens to Christian radio. Perfect.
Sis is much more contemporary. She watches the same shows as all her friends so they can talk about who’s cool and who’s more popular than they deserve to be in pop culture. She and her girlfriends watch Surf Beach High, the most viewed show on TV right now. They also are all on their social media feeds with each other. Sis even has a growing friendship with a couple of online friends she’s never met before. I know this because I’m both of them.
Ms. Dermis is a little harder. She is a relatively new teacher and still is immersed in the pedagogical culture. Her online activities seem to center around teacher resource sites, and she listens to public radio. Not a lot of TV watching, though I’ve seen where she’s watched a couple of romantic comedies and more than a few action movies. The latter movies would be her boyfriend’s choices, I’m guessing.
Mrs. Zaftig and Ms. Fellaicceo both watch the weekend version of the morning show Mom watches, so that’s easy, and they watch the evening news. That’s a little harder, because I haven’t finished my real time editing software yet. Still, I’ve managed to insert a few pre-made special segments and occasionally, I’ve managed to delay an airing, under special circumstances, so I can change a few key elements of the show. Commercials, on the other hand, are very simple to replace in real time.
So, everything was set and ready to start. I filed my plan, got approval, and went to talk with Mr. Shill about my initial outline. Mr. Shill is pretty cool with me doing my own thing. He has come to accept my self-directed discipline around learning and as such, his approval and support come with little to no effort on my part. I also think he’ll really like the school uniforms I ultimately have in mind for my project. I intentionally haven’t presented any particular uniform. Everyone has their own image of what that is, and my image of what our uniform will look like I pulled directly from Mr. Shill’s browser history. It just so happens that he spends time on special adult sites that feature uniforms. I don’t want to get Mr. Shill in trouble, so I won’t say any more than that.
You probably don’t have the imagination to understand how it is possible to succeed. I’ll give you a brief introduction to the principles involved. There are two fundamental characteristics of human psychology I will be exploiting. The media is founded on these principles.
I read this book once called ‘The Overton Window’. The Overton Window is that narrow window of acceptable social values within which people feel free to act. You can’t get people to act outside the window of their social values, but you can get them to act closer and closer to the edge of that window. The more they step close to the edge of that window the more normalized that variant behavior becomes and the center of that window begins to shift towards the new normal moral value. This has the effect of gradually moving that moral window.
Hollywood and advertising use that concept all the time. By exposing people to a concept, even if it is in a negative light, the edges of their window of acceptable values shifts, ever so slightly. If people begin to associate the new aberrant idea with a growing common acceptance, they will begin to adjust their window to encompass the new value.
Next, My mom helps out at the church thrift shop. She tends the counter and processes inventory once a week and sometimes sells her baked goods, cookies, cake, home made doughnuts, that sort of thing. She has a wide variety of flavors in each. I’ve helped out often.
Do you know what the single most common question the customers ask when deciding on which pastry to choose from? No, it’s not, “Which is the least expensive?", it’s not, “Which one tastes better?", it’s not, “Do I get a discount if I buy more than one?", and it is not, “What’s your favorite?” That last one is actually the second most common question and is related to the first most common question the customer will ask, “Which one is the most popular?”
Think Bord Motor Company. What is the one phrase that almost every Bord car commercial uses in their TV ads? It’s, “The number one selling car, in its class.”
What they are telling their customers is, they are the most popular car; not the best, not the safest, not the most fun to drive, not how their warranties are the most comprehensive, or they’re the best value. Sure, they make those claims on occasion, but I’ve never heard a Bord car or truck commercial that didn’t make the point that they were the most popular car. It works too.
Part of the success of my plan hinges on my ability to convince my audience that these ideas I’m trying to sell are not just accepted by others, but are growing in popularity. I need to convince my target audience that what I’m selling is what other people would choose, too.
Officially starting my Senior Project, I went to Mr. Shill’s room and said, “Hey Mr. Shill. I just submitted my project with Mrs. Zaftig’s secretary.”
He replied, “Very good, Bentley. So, what’s your first step? Let’s see your outlined plan.”
It’s bullshit, but it also works as a general process.
I’ve defined the market and decided upon the products, but it’s not good marketing to tell him, “I’m going to sell Ms. Dermis on teaching class in the nude,” or “I am going to get the girls to wear pornographic schoolgirl uniforms.” I’m certainly not telling him about my plans for incestuous sex lessons at home. Anyhow, Mr. Shill seemed pleased with my bull.
I then left to talk to Ms. Dermis at the end of the school day. I have been refining my message.
The current dress code is absurd. Most of it has nothing to do with the learning environment and is some made up stuff designed to relieve administration of the burden of teaching good values and behaviors by imprisoning students in an environment lacking choices. By allowing students to make their own choices while providing them with a safe and supportive atmosphere of informed values, they will become better decision makers when released to their own discretion. This is the fundamental message I’m selling the change of dress code with and, indirectly, Ms. Dermis on nudity in the classroom.
So, I’ve adjusted the short term goal: ‘Teach in the nude’, to fit a more acceptable moral-base. ‘The latest research in teenage emotional health coupled with a few subliminal suggestions that teachers, as models for their students, have emotional needs, like everybody else, and an obligation to lead by example.’
I’m working on creating a culture of acceptance in overt expressions of sexuality. Openness is better for healthy development than covering up and suppressing female/male differences. Women should be proud of their femininity and be more comfortable letting their gender show.
Also, allowing students to make poor choices in a supportive environment offers opportunities to teach better choices for the future. Modeling the freedom of open expressions of personal choice builds secure, strong, and emotionally stable adults. BS, of course, but said the right way in the right context at the right time, it sounds like obvious good sense and wisdom.
For instance, I know Ms. Dermis listens to a segment of public radio in her car every morning on her way to work. I’ve managed to hijack her car radio and I created an alternative program for her to listen to. I ran through some old segments available online and found one about nudist camps. The show she listened to this morning was a follow up show to the nudist camp show I played for her, and other faculty that listen to the radio, last month. I also inserted a few key ideas about the statistics around the emotional health of children who grew up in naturist families.
Here’s where my real genius helps out. I have created a text-to-speech program that allows me to imitate any voice and natural inflections of speech through typing special keyboard characters. I type in the script, including pauses, stress points and syllabic accents and a convincing, natural, real person’s voice comes out.
For example, Ms. Dermis heard on the radio about a month ago, “Your research seems to suggest that open nudity is actually a more healthy way to grow up, Doctor Bickle?” in the voice of the regular program anchor.
Dr. Bickle answered, “Absolutely true. I have followed twenty three families who raised children as naturists and compared their emotional indexes to the norm, and in every category, they have proved as strongly secure or more so than the mean. Then I looked at other groups that might differ from the norm, such as military families, religious families, ethnic families, even hippy commune families and among those groups, the ones who have a free and open attitude around nudity and their bodies, demonstrate a consistent trend towards higher emotional health measures.”
At the end of the show, I had the announcer tell the professor that she was convinced and thought she might look into finding a nudist camp to join for her family and herself.
Most of the show was just a repeat of the one they originally aired. My goal was to expose Ms. Dermis to the idea of and put acceptable thoughts of public nudity in her mind. There’s no way she would jump right into, “I’ve got to show my tits in class.” However, this has become an element of the culture in which Ms. Dermis now lives.
I also went for a print campaign. Ms. Dermis gets a few professional teacher periodicals, along with most of the other teachers in school. I have the technology, both at home and here in school, to reproduce professionally printed material.
Over the course of the first semester, I have managed to intercept and reroute the two most popular of these subscriptions, ‘Pedagogue Weekly’ and ‘Teaching Science Today’. They come to me and I replace them with a slightly modified version the next day. I am now doing it with all the magazines the teachers get, but the others are only changed enough to keep the most popular ones from standing out for their changing styles.
Again, let me talk about my genius. Audio programming isn’t the only thing I’ve improved upon. I excel as an artist and the open source 3D graphics programs I’ve modified are amazing. My skin and hair textures are perfect. I am able to create photo realistic people perfectly. I am also a very talented graphics editor. In less than two hours, the night each issue arrives, I have edited and reprinted all thirty-six magazines and have them ready for distribution in each teacher’s mailbox at school for the next day.
Frankly, the cover is the most important part. Most teachers hardly even thumb through the table of contents. If they see an article highlighted on the cover that interests them, they might sit and read it at lunch break. I don’t need to kill myself coming up with a lot of new material. Any completely unique article is printed up ahead of time and simply inserted. The other area that saves time are the ads. These magazines are filled with ads and I’ve seen teachers, especially the female teachers, (I’m not meaning to be chauvinistic, but it’s true) the female teachers all stop to read the ads with big pictures of perfume bottles, handsome couples, models in the latest fashion or good looking professors standing at a smartboard.
The faculty and staff have been reading their professional journals a day late with images, especially the cover, slightly modified, for the last three months. Last week, the cover of Teaching Science Today, had a picture of a very confidant looking female teacher in a business-skirt that came to well above mid-thigh. Her blouse was unbuttoned two buttons more than
