Concepts : An Infinite Sketching App for iPad
Apple has announced a new Lockdown Mode for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS designed to protect people who may be personally targeted by sophisticated digital threats. In a press release, Apple says :

Lockdown Mode — the first major capability of its kind, coming this fall with iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura — is an extreme, optional protection for the very small number of users who face grave, targeted threats to their digital security.

Lockdown mode is designed to limit certain features to reduce the attack surface available to spyware. The company said that :

At launch, Lockdown Mode includes the following protections:
Web browsing: Certain complex web technologies, like just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation, are disabled unless the user excludes a trusted site from Lockdown Mode.
Apple services: Incoming invitations and service requests, including FaceTime calls, are blocked if the user has not previously sent the initiator a call or request.
Wired connections with a computer or accessory are blocked when iPhone is locked.
Configuration profiles cannot be installed, and the device cannot enroll into mobile device management (MDM), while Lockdown Mode is turned on.
Apple is also doubling its bounty payouts for qualifying findings in Lockdown mode up to a maximum of $2 million.
The company added that its grant of $10 million, plus any damages awarded in its lawsuit against the NSO Group:

will be made to the Dignity and Justice Fund established and advised by the Ford Foundation — a private foundation dedicated to advancing equity worldwide — and designed to pool philanthropic resources to advance social justice globally.

The Dignity and Justice Fund will begin making grants from the funds beginning late this year or in early 2023.
Lockdown Mode is clearly intended for high-profile individuals who feel they may be at risk of a targeted attack. Although the feature will be available to anyone to turn on, doing so will significantly limit the features of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac in ways that most people are unlikely to want to do.
Today, our friend Stephen Hackett launched a follow-up to his successful 2021 Apple hardware calendar campaign on Kickstarter . This year’s calendar features more of Stephen’s excellent product photography along with notable dates in Apple’s software history.
You can watch Stephen’s announcement video here:
In addition to the wall calendar, Stephen has created a digital wallpaper pack for backers who pledge $5 or more. If you pledge $32 or more, you get the wall calendar, wallpaper pack, and a .ics file for importing Apple’s software dates into a calendar app. Pledge $38 or more, and you’ll get stickers too.
Stephen’s been working hard on this project for a while now. I’m really looking forward to seeing this year’s photos, which are a great way to show off his collection of Apple hardware, and browsing through the dates he’s compiled for this year’s calendar.
This week on AppStories, we survey some of our favorite reading and research apps across all of Apple’s platforms.

Because Club MacStories now encompasses more than just newsletters, we’ve created a guide to the past week’s happenings along with a look at what’s coming up next:
One of the greatest strengths of the App Store is its abundance of choice. For every app category, there are always multiple excellent options from which to pick. That’s never been more true for the recipe app category. Paprika was my long-time personal favorite until Mela came along , but there are other great options like Grocery and Crouton too. Another app that belongs on that list is Pestle , an iPhone and iPad app by Will Bishop.
At its core, Pestle is a recipe manager, but it also integrates with Reminders to create shopping lists, offers a way to discover new dishes, and integrates meal planning, making it a well-rounded solution. The app also features a modern design that works well in the kitchen and some clever details like hands-free voice control for moving between recipe steps while cooking, making it worth a closer look.

(Contains Vivi corruption and smoking, this is not related to my Mistress Wednesday series) It had been three weeks since Vivi had chosen to stay behind while her friends, the Straw Hat Pirates had left to continue their adventure. While she wanted to continue traveling, she could not abandon the country and people she loved so much, so she decided it would be for the best to not go with them. Even though she had not gone with them on adventures, that did not mean that she had just decided to rest and become a princess that would just be there for appearance's sake, she still had much work to do to help Alabaster. She had been meeting with Koza, who had led a resistance against the government that she was a part of and due to their friendship, forged from childhood, they had been making progress on ensuring that both sides of the war that had been fought, would be taken care of. She had also been working with the Marines. The Marines had considered at first to cover up the fact that one of the Seven Warlords had been a villain, but thanks to pressure from the Alabaster government, led by Vivi herself, the Marines had decided to announce that Sir Crocodile, had in fact been a villain. Today, she was going to his office in the casino Rain Dinners, which had been run by Crocodile to see if she could find any paperwork that could lead to the identity of more members of the group Crocodile had led, Baroque Works. Vivi's father had suggested that Vivi bring along Pell, the commander of the Alabaster Royal Guard, who luckily had survived a near death experience, but Vivi had turned the offer down. The Royal Guard was needed in the capital city still, with Baroque Works members still causing some skirmishes in the area. For this reason, Vivi approached Rain Dinners alone, well except for her friend and leader of the Super-Spot Billed Duck Troops, Karoo, who Vivi was riding to the casino. They pair arrived and Vivi nodded to the security guard at the door, Vivi having called ahead and told them that she would be there. She was told by the guard that Karoo would have to remain outside, which bothered the princess, but not wanting to cause a scene, she relented. As she passed by the guard, he looked away from the princess and a sinister smile grew on his face. Vivi walked through the casino area, still open, but now under the jurisdiction of the Alabaster government. She had a problem with the country profiting off the backs of people losing money gambling, but that was not a fight she felt was worth having now. So, she ignored all the gambling going on and reached the doorway that led to Crocodile's office. She opened the door and saw the stairs she had run down once before, when she wanted to kill Crocodile for all he had done. Vivi looked at the room as she walked down the stairs. To her left was the small cage made of seastone, that Crocodile had, probably to hold cheaters, but had been used against her, her friends, and even a Marine captain. In the middle of the room was a long table that Crocodile loved to sit at. She was not concerned with those spots, however. It was the desk to the side she was concerned with. She was honestly a bit relieved to see the desk still there, when she had last been in this room it had been flooded from the lake on the outside of the casino. It was only through the hard work of the employees of the casino that the room had been salvaged. While the desk still being there was a small miracle, it was the look of the desk that made Vivi take pause. The desk looked good as new. There was no water damage on it, it looked like there had never been a tidal wave of water that had moved it around. Stranger still, the desk still had items on top of it, a box, a transponder snail, and some paperwork. "Bingo" She said allowed, distracted from the strangeness by the paperwork she had been hopeful would be there. She picked up the top sheet of paper and started to read it. "Operation: Backup", it said in big letters. She knew that Crocodile's plan to destroy Alabaster had been Operation Utopia, so this new name made her worried, if there was a backup plan it needed to be stopped now. She looked down and saw the sheet underneath the one she had taken with the name had some writing on it as well. "In the case of my defeat, open up my box on this desk. The instructions for Baroque Works return will be inside." Vivi read these words and her blood ran cold. A plan to bring back Baroque Works, the group that had nearly destroyed her kingdom. She had to know what the plan was so she could stop it. She reached over to the cigar box and opened it. From the box a puff of green smoke came up and Vivi inhaled it almost instantaneously. She started to cough and needed to sit down, luckily the chair Crocodile used to sit at was there with the desk so Vivi sat down and let her lungs unclog themselves. Vivi took a few minutes before her breathing returned to normal. She opened her eyes and it was like she was seeing the room in a whole new light. This place was incredible. It was an underwater room in the middle of a desert. She turned around and stared at the water that was viewable from the big window Crocodile had installed in the room. In the past, before Sanji had ruined it, you could see Bananawani swim by, but after the room had flooded, the surviving Bananawani had been taken by conservationist to be released back into the wild. "Ruined?" Vivi asked herself, realizing the thought she had just had. It was true that they were beautiful, fierce creators, that were perfect if you needed to get rid of enemies, but, but... Vivi trailed off. "What is the but?" Vivi asked herself unable to come up with one any more. She turned back around and continued to admire the amazing architecture the room had needed and how it was all thanks to those suckers upstairs that were giving up their life savings to have a chance, a tiny chance, some would say no chance, Vivi thought, a grin growing on her face, to strike it big. That thought didn't feel right either and Vivi shook her head. Her eyes then went down and looked back at the cigar box on the table. Did she know it was a cigar box before? "Don't worry about it", she said aloud to herself, and leaned forward and dragged the box to herself. She looked inside and all she saw were cigars, which made sense, since it was Crocodile's cigar box. She needed to see if there was a note in the box, so she grabbed a cigar and when it went into her hand, she paused. It felt right in her hand, it felt correct, like it should have been there before, like she had it in there before. She leaned back, the paper forgotten about and stared at the cigar in her hand. She admired the brown color, and after looking around to ensure no one was watching, she moved it below her nose to sniff it. It smelled wonderful. Vivi looked around the desk and was happy to see a lighter there, one of Crocodile's own, it looked like it was made of gold. She grabbed it with her left hand and realized if she was going to light it, she would want to do it with her right hand, which currently was holding a cigar. She snorted, knowing the easy answer. She stuck the cigar in her mouth and moved the lighter from her left to her right hand. She lit the lighter and stared at the flame for a second. She knew what she wanted to do now, but a small part of herself tried to stop her, but she ignored it. That part was weak, and she was strong. She moved the lit lighter to the cigar and took a puff on the cigar getting it to light. It took a few tries, Vivi not being used to it, but eventually the cigar was lit and Vivi unlit the lighter and put it down on the desk. She took a puff of the cigar then took it out of her mouth so she could exhale the smoke. While exhaling she coughed. The cough slowly changed from a cough to a laugh, one that used to reverberate in the room every time Crocodile was there. "Kuhahaha", Vivi laughed, the same laugh Crocodile loved to do. Vivi moved the cigar back to her mouth and let it stay there, the need to cough disappearing. She smiled and took in the room. It was quite nice, she was certainly going to be spending more time here. She took out the cigar, tap a few ashes into the empty ashtray that was on the desk and grabbed the cigar box, wanting to get to the bottom of what Operation Backup was. She noticed now, below the cigar she had taken she could see the note was below all the cigars. She pulled the note out and read it. "Baroque Works is now yours, do with it what you wish. I have bigger fish to fry. -Crocodile." Vivi stared at the note and started to laugh again, of course Operation Backup was to create a backup Crocodile to continue his plans and schemes. He was so smart thinking this up. This whole office must have been remade to trap someone who was looking to find out any information Crocodile had left behind and she had fallen for it. She took another puff of the cigar, exhaled the smoke without taking it out of her mouth and saw a transponder snail on the table. She grabbed the transponder part of it and waited for an answer on the other end of the line. "I imagine the room is to your liking princess", came a voice from the other end, belonging to the guard at the entrance of the casino. "Yes, it is quite well-preserved, good job, I assume I am speaking to a member of the millions?" Vivi answered back, her mouth having the cigar in it causing her voice to sound gruffer. "Yes ma'am, so princess, what should we do now?" The guard asked, his voice barely above a whisper so as not to grab the attention of any of the patrons of the casino. "Well first", Vivi began, "you are going to come down here so you do not need to whisper and you can give me more information on the current state of Baroque Works." Vivi let out another exhale and continued. "Second, you are not to call me princess in case if anyone is listening in, I already have a Baroque Works name, so that will work for now, call me Miss Wednesday." Vivi put down the phone and turned around and stared at the man-made lake that the room allowed her to. She took another drag, and took the cigar out of her mouth before walking towards the window. Baroque Works was back, and she would make sure that it did not fail this time.
