Mazda and Toyota to build electric vehicles together

The two Japanese automakers have agreed on a strategic partnership to develop and manufacture electric vehicles, according to Clean Technica. In addition, the companies are going to spend $ 1.6 billion to build a car assembly plant in the United States. It is also planned to develop the production of electric vehicles at this plant.

The partnership implies that Toyota acquires a 5% stake in Mazda. And that in turn - 0.25% of Toyota shares. The main joint project of the two companies will be a plant for the production of cars of both brands in the United States. It is reported to have a capacity of 300,000 vehicles per year and employ approximately 4,000 people. The partnership assumes that over time, the share of electric cars produced at this plant will increase.

The deal is primarily beneficial for Mazda. Prior to that, the company did not have a factory in the United States - the company sent cars made in Japan and Mexico there. Mazda also has a relatively small R&D budget. For comparison: Mazda's research budget is $ 1.27 billion, Toyota's is 7 times more. Mazda has stated that it lacks this amount. So the company would have to deal with electric vehicles for a long time on its own. Even now, it can be seen that all Mazda efforts have been focused on getting the most efficiency out of a liter of fuel. EV was out of the question. Now it will be able to access Toyota's research facilities. The agreement also includes working together on unmanned technologies.

This partnership between the companies came as no surprise, analysts say. Toyota has been deepening its relationships with other automakers for a long time. For example, it already owns 16.5% of Subaru and is going to cooperate with Suzuki. Market conditions are pushing automakers to form alliances to counter competition from IT companies. Mazda has a good reputation for making quality cars and could be a welcome prey for any big IT company with a self-driving program but no automotive experience. Toyota prevents such scenarios in advance, preventing any of the IT giants from crushing a relatively large automaker, which will fundamentally change the situation in the global automotive market.

It was recently revealed that Toyota is developing a solid electrolyte battery, and the new battery will debut in 2022 EVs. The company also unveiled a prototype of its hydrogen truck. Toyota recently donated $ 10 million to MIT for research related to lithium-ion batteries.
