While proper use of a condom can greatly lower the risk of catching many STDs, including HIV, testing is the only way to be sure if there is any question that either of you may have been exposed to STDs.
If you cannot bring yourself to talk about these things, then you may not be ready to deal with the responsibilities of sex.
