Hi all. I'm considering starting a mature age carpentry apprenticeship. I'm 21, I believe the age for mature age is 21?
I was wondering about what kinda wage could be expected, I did the pay calculator on fairwork and it came up with 20 an hour, but that seems a bit much?
I've also done general labouring for 2 years so I was wondering if anyone knew of from this experience I could claim prior learning and skip some of the apprenticeship ? Cheers

you get some tools allowances etc.... cash over tools ...

yes .. you have to summit it before you start studies and/or marked down in your apprenticeship log's...

You'll still have to do all the trade school stuff and it's up to the employer to sign you off early and there's not much incentive for them to do that unless you get on really well with each other. When you think about it why should he when he has to amortise your early lack of skills by paying you a higher rate early, only to see you walk down the road. Get used to the idea of a normal apprenticeship term is my advice.

You're 21, op. Forget trying to skip some of the apprenticeship; start it, do it, finish it the right way and learn some new tricks. As a mature age apprentice, you get paid relatively well for it, so make the most of it.

No, that sounds about right. Don't forget your employer can (and will) get subsidies from the government to help him/her pay your wage.
21 does not qualify for "mature" age
Thanks for the advice peoples.
The idea of prior learning is simply that, an idea. I've heard it's somewhat difficult to get, I'm fully prepared to cop the normal term of an apprenticeship I was just wondering what the go is with prior learning.
If the pay really is 20 an hour it makes me wonder why an employer would hire someone who costs virtually double just for being over 21. Unless of course as mentioned they received subsidies from the government
Depends on the trade RPL is easy to get .
No RPL can be done if u were a labour in the electrical or plumbing fields .
Ring a Tafe or apprenticeship board they will answer it all

No it doesn't, in the normal sense of the word, but for the purposes of determining hourly rates of pay, it does.

They used to receive subsidies for what are called "adult apprentices", but that's over 25, not 21. They also ended in 2015, I've just found out.
There were (are?) mature age incentives, for over 45s too.

One might assume that someone over 21 might have more (any) work experience, vs an apprentice at 17 or 18 who might have absolutely none. That would only be an assumption though, and not always the case. Who knows.

Well you really have it in the form of a higher pay rate than a 15 or 16 year old and it's more about the maturity you bring than any particular prior learning. At the beginning of each year you're costing the tradesman valuable time which needs to be made up with your productivity in the second half of each year until another pay step and the rinse repeat. To the extent you exceed all expectations in that process you may be rewarded with above award or bonuses at the employer's discretion.
Remember the employer doesn't pay you the customers do and they're a real tight ass bunch of bosses ;)
Hey mate, I'm 24 years old and I'm a second year chippy next month.
The age for mature age apprentices is 25, you're looking for an adult apprenticeship (21).
When you're signed up for your apprenticeship you can apply for RPL, you probably won't get the full 2 years taken off but I'd assume you'd get anywhere between 6 months ~ 1 year taken off your time.
If you're finding it hard to get an apprenticeship right off the bat, look for builders that are hiring labourers, they'll always put on great workers. That's how I found my current employer as well the other two adult apprentices.

We are running a $3.44 million Mature-Age Apprentice Wage-Gap pilot program.
Early in 2021 we launched a pilot program for 150 mature-age apprentices aged 21 or older designed to help offset the extra costs of hiring older trainees. This $3.44 million Mature-Age Wage-Gap pilot program was created after consultation with industry and feedback around the extra wage cost being a burden for construction industry businesses wanting to hire mature-age apprentices and trainees.
It is just one of the ways the levy is making a contribution to delivering a job-ready, skilled WA construction industry workforce.
The funding, which reduces the gap between mature-age and junior rates and applies to 150 apprentices employed in 10 trades: brick and block laying, carpentry/carpentry & joinery, Civil Construction (Cert III traineeship), concreting, painting and decorating, plastering, plumbing & gas fitting, roof plumbing, wall and ceiling fixing, wall and floor tiling.
Employers who were successful applicants for the program, who have hired apprentices after February 22, 2021, will save about $16,000 in the first year of a three-year apprenticeship and $23,000 overall.
