She is Doctor Who's most famous assistant since its 2005 revival, while he was an unknown actor propelled to fame when chosen to star in the BBC series.
And now it seems Billie Piper and Matt Smith had more in common than their love of the Time Lord - three years before the latter landed the show's eponymous role.
Pictured holding hands at a Surrey fete in 2006, the pair stroll together through the crowd, drinking Pimms and enjoying the sunshine.

At this point, the two actors had just been reunited on the set of ITV2's Piper vehicle, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, in which Smith had a minor role.
They had previously worked together on BBC drama The Ruby in the Smoke.
Although Smith and Piper never announced they were officially a couple, a friend who was with them on the day they visited the fete says their chemistry was unmistakeable.
'They were very touchy-feely and seemed really at ease with each other,' they said. 'Everybody assumed they were a couple by the way they were acting.'

The friend added that the two actors did not go unnoticed by the crowd.
'A lot of people were talking about how good they looked together,' they said.
'They were definitely having a great time. Obviously everyone knew who Billie was - but Matt wasn't at all famous then. It's amazing to think he has gone on to star in Doctor Who.'

Whatever happened after their day at the fete, it seems sparks did not fly as Piper is now married to fellow actor Laurence Fox, whom she has a one-year-old son with.
Meanwhile, Smith recently split up with Brazilian actress Mayana Moura but it seems model Daisy Lowe may have finally succumbed to his charms.
He commented in an interview with the Guardian last month that the 21-year-old is 'a pretty lady' when asked about his love life and was pictured holding hands with her at Coachella music festival last night.
He also said in the interview he had always been quite popular with the fairer sex - and as these pictures prove, he was definitely telling the truth.

Oh dear, the fodder for all the little fanboys and fangirls.
In the first season of Billie Piper’s series Secret Diary of a Call Girl — just out on DVD in Region 1 and reviewed here — there’s a special guest in one of the episodes: Matt Smith, Doctor Who ’s 11th Doctor .
This is long before he was cast as the Doctor, of course. And everyone knows that Billie Piper isn’t really Rose Tyler, but still: tee-hee. The Doctor and Rose.
Okay, here’s the deal. Piper’s Belle has decided that she’s gonna take a break from hooking for a while, and Matt Smith is the handsome clerk at an upscale shop she meets while browsing for a wedding gift for a friend:
Oh my. At least he’s not one of her johns.
This episode featured a line that greatly amused me–when Billie Piper starts flirting with Matt Smith, she gets a surprised expression on her face and the voiceover goes, “Oh no! I’m gonna have to start givin it away!”
she doesn’t look like she’s enjoying giving it away anymore than she did selling it. but that’s often the way.
my lizard brain is still saying, No, no, no, no…. (add in 14 more “no”) this child matt smith *cannot* be the next Doctor.
I wonder if that’s one of the eps they shot when she was pregnant and they had to stick to head and shoulder shots!

Goodness the DW macro community in all their nutty glory had caught on to that one by about the end of day one…
On the reassuring side, Billie has said she liked working with him so much on Ruby in the Smoke that she was the one who lobbied to get him on Secret Diary. Which has to be a good thing, right?
I wonder if that’s one of the eps they shot when she was pregnant and they had to stick to head and shoulder shots!
Nah, that’s from series 1, she wasn’t heavily pregnant enough to need body doubles until series 2.

WHOVIANS are set to go into overdrive as a pair of familiar faces have been snapped getting cosy to each other off-screen.
Matt Smith, who played the 11th regeneration of the Doctor, and Billie Piper, who took on the role of companion Rose, cuddled up for the cameras at the press night of Matt's new play Unreachable on Friday night.
Although the pair were never seen on screen together on the smash hit BBC show, it appears that their connection runs deeper than the confines of the TARDIS, and beamed as they posed for the snaps.
However, we may not have seen the last of Matt in his infamous fez and bowtie, as writer Steven Moffatt has dropped hints that the 33-year-old actor may be back and regenerate as himself in upcoming episodes of Doctor Who.
Doctor Who has seen over a dozen faces portray the titular character over it's running time in the past 50 years, using a loophole in the Whoniverse mythology to regenerate the role whenever an actor bows out.
The Thick of it All star Peter Capaldi is currently in the part, but it is expected that he will step down at the end of the next series, due to air in 2017.
Meanwhile Matt, who left the show in 2013, has made no secret of his desire to return to the TARDIS, following a series of movie roles and stage productions including a musical version of thriller classic American Psycho.
His new play Unreachable is centred around an obsessive film director.
Matt is also due to be seen in Netflix original drama The Crown which is due to be uploaded to the streaming site in November.
Billie, on the other hand, looks like she doesn't have a care in the world as she embraces Matt on the red carpet of the star-studded media event.
She has recently just completed a stint as the troubled Lily on Sky show Penny Dreadful, which saw her in one scene writhe around in blood.
The 33-year-old actress was also granted a "quickie" divorce from husband Laurence Fox in May on the grounds of his "unreasonable behaviour".
