I am a Learning Support teacher and have a 5th grade student with High Functioning Autism. He has been putting his hands down his pants while in the classroom. It appears that he is masturbating and I am not quite sure how to handle this…any ideas?
The topic of masturbation can be uncomfortable for both parents and teachers of children both with and without disabilities. Masturbation is a developmentally appropriate activity. Often when students begin to publicly masturbate, the gut response is to try to get them to stop entirely. That will typically result in the worsening of the behavior or potentially an increase in other problematic behaviors. Rather than focusing on eliminating masturbation, we need to teach where and when masturbation can occur.
Unlike neurotypical children who understand that masturbation is a private behavior, children with exceptionalities will likely need to be directly taught the negative social ramifications of touching one’s private areas in public. With some students (younger or an individual with extensive support needs), a simple “interrupt and redirect” or providing a replacement behavior such as playing with a fidget item may be sufficient. However, for students who are older that can understand the negative social and legal ramifications of public masturbation, direct instruction is essential.
Interventions should only be implemented after the completion and review of a Functional Behavior Assessment. The team must approve any intervention before implementation.
This intervention includes strategies for younger and older students with consideration for comprehending the behavior. Use of ‘interruption/redirection’ with a question regarding school work or providing a ‘fidget’ item can be a quick and successful intervention.
Before beginning any intervention, ensure a comprehensive Functional Behavior Assessment has been completed. Ensure any interventions put into place align with the results from the assessment.
Before addressing this issue, the adult involved should be sure that he/she can remain positive, supportive and not pass judgment or shameful feelings onto the child. For all students there should be a collaboration with the families to ensure a streamlined approach and supportive message about self-exploration. Speak with the families about encouraging private times in the home for the child to self-explore.
If a Functional Behavior Assessment has been completed and social attention identified as a potential function, redirect without providing direct acknowledgement or social attention to the behavior. Consider redirecting to another physical activity or ongoing activity. You can provide a ‘fidget item’ as well to the student, again without attention to the behavior.
Teachers should conduct a preference assessment to identify other potential reinforcers. While touching yourself may be number one, other items or activities may serve to compete with masturbation in the school context. Providing access to alternative and competing reinforcers contingent on the absence of inappropriate self-touch may help to minimize or decrease the behavior.
It would also be a good idea to address how you or other teachers will cue the child to stop the behavior in a subtle way should he forget while in school. Come up with another activity to keep hands busy. Make sure to keep that alternate activity accessible to the student. If possible, proactively engage students in exercise or frequent movement breaks. This may minimize the likelihood of masturbation during class.

For 3 years, I masturbated in class and never got caught.

For the entirety of middle school (12-14 years old) and to this day, I found boners really irritating and embarrassing to have. I hated the feeling of having one, and I never wanted anyone to see that I had one. And when I was in middle school, I got them so often in class. You know, all the perks of being a horny middle schooler. And it was the most annoying thing in the world. Wanting a fast way to get rid of them, 12 year old me, having learned what masturbation was on Wikipedia and done it before, decided to do it in class. I know, I was a dumb child. You don't have to tell me.
So during my first year in middle school (6th grade) in some random class, I decided to masturbate for the first time outside of my house. It was a fast one and it felt good, as all orgasms do. But the best part was, the boner went away! And that was all I wanted. As middle school progressed, I did more of these fast ones whenever I got a boner. I did them in every class you could think of - math class, science class, English class, even once in PE. And every time, the boner went away. After I finished my business, I'd just go back to work or do whatever the teacher wanted my class to do. Surprisingly, despite doing this for so long, I never got caught by my teachers or my classmates. Someone once did ask me what I was doing while I was masturbating back in 6th grade, but I don't think he ever suspected I was doing what I was doing. I don't know how I never got caught, because looking back it wasn't very secret at all.
After I graduated middle school, I swore to myself that I'd never do it again in high school (and I've kept my word on it, trust me!). The odds of getting caught masturbating in high school seemed too high for me, and I also felt somewhat guilty that I had done it for so long. I still do it at home though (you thought I wouldn't? Hah!).
My friends always like to tell me how smart of a person I am because I get good grades in school and know a lot of things they don't. I bet they never thought I'd be smart enough to masturbate in class and never get caught. ;)
EDIT: Just would like to admit that I was a bit naive for saying I never got caught because there may have been a few people who saw me but never said anything. However, I never was referred to the office or humiliated publicly for doing so. No one even brought it up with me or anyone else within those 3 years. That's my main reasoning for saying I "never got caught." I'm sure if someone actually caught me and called me out on it, I would have been the laughingstock of the school for years to come haha

LONG BEACH, N.Y. –Long Beach, New York middle school special education teacher Lisa Weitzman once forced a male student to masturbate in front of his classmates, according to a recently filed lawsuit.
The notice of claim filed in Nassau County Supreme Court against Long Beach Public Schools on behalf of five former students also alleges Weitzman forced her disabled students to eat foods that made them sick, restrained them with zip ties, pushed them against walls, verbally berated them, gave one student a lap dance, among other outrageous behavior, Courthouse News Service reports.
Parents of five of Weitzman’s students – four male and one female – are suing the school district for $25 million – $5 million for each victim, attorney Gerard Misk told The Huffington Post .
“While I have seen other instances of abuse that have been appalling, this one is worse because these are the most vulnerable children,” he said. “The families trusted this teacher and the school and had their trust destroyed.”
Misk told the news site the children involved suffer from Down syndrome or autism, and could not communicate the alleged abuse to their parents. He said the lawsuit targets the school district for failing to take action against Weitzman to stop the abuse despite numerous warnings from teaching assistants.
The alleged abuse took place between 2011 and 2014, the Post reports.
Details of the alleged abuse came to light in a school disciplinary hearing to terminate Weitzman that began March 4. Weitzman has been suspended from teaching since late 2014, the Long Beach Herald reports.
The school district presented eight charges against Weitzman in the hearing, which was held in public at the teacher’s request.
“Ms. Weitzman did not do the heinous acts of which she is accused,” Weitzman’s attorney, Debra Wabnik, told the news site in an email. “She elected to have a public hearing because she has nothing to hide. She devoted herself to caring and advocating for the children entrusted to her and their families. If anyone failed these kids, it was the district. That will be borne out as the hearing continues.”
More than 20 members of the public attended the hearing, where Weitzman’s supervisor testified that she routinely used a classroom bathroom as a time-out space despite repeated instructions to stop. Weitzman was reportedly reassigned for the bathroom issue, but district officials did not inform parents until nearly a year later, Special Education PTA co-president Patrice Krezminski said.
“They felt horrible … that they didn’t see that this may or may not have happened to their child,” Krezminski said of parents of the alleged victims. “ … (T)hey wanted answers, and the district did the best they could with answering legally in terms of what they can and cannot say.”
The special education PTA pressured school officials and the board of education to more thoroughly investigate the allegations against Weitzman, which prompted the hearing and subsequent lawsuit.
“It’s not that we didn’t care; we didn’t know about it,” Krezminski said. “We’re not lawyers. We’re not employed by the district. There’s only certain things we can do, which we did.”
But the lawsuit against the school district alleges that school officials were well aware of Weitzman’s misdeeds and did not take action until the school board was contacted by the teacher’s union about the situation.
“Though at least 11 teachers assistants filed complaints about Weitzman over the past seven years, none of the 11 complaints were ever investigated, according to the petition” cited by Courthouse News. “That changed in November 2015 when the former head of the teacher’s union fired of a letter to school board president, Roy Lester, demanding action, the petition states.”
The charges in the lawsuit and the termination hearing detail basically the same abuse – stomping on students’ feet with heels, using the bathroom as a time-out area, zip-tying or duct taping students to restrain them, and other alleged physical abuse.
The lawsuit, but not the school charges, allege the teacher forced a male student to masturbate in front of his classmates, while the school hearing documented allegations Weitzman performed a lap dance on a student, and ducted taped gloves on the hands of a student to prevent the child with playing with their feces – which were not in the lawsuit.
School officials, meanwhile, have largely kept quiet about the case.
“Please know that Long Beach has complied, and will continue to comply, with all federal and state legal requirements regarding complaints to the district about possible abuse or mistreatment of our students,” superintendent David Weiss told the Post in a statement.
“Laws protecting the privacy of students prohibit us from saying anything more.”
