Massage - Get in touch with its many benefits

Mayo Clinic offers appointments in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota and at Mayo Clinic Health System locations.
Massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being. See if it's right for you.
Massage used to be available only through luxury spas and upscale health clubs. Today, massage therapy is offered in businesses, clinics, hospitals and even airports. If you've never tried massage, learn about its possible health benefits and what to expect during a massage therapy session.
Massage is a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Massage may range from light stroking to deep pressure. There are many different types of massage, including these common types:
Massage is generally considered part of integrative medicine. It's increasingly being offered along with standard treatment for a wide range of medical conditions and situations.
While more research is needed to confirm the benefits of massage, some studies have found massage may also be helpful for:
Beyond the benefits for specific conditions or diseases, some people enjoy massage because it often produces feelings of caring, comfort and connection.
Despite its benefits, massage isn't meant as a replacement for regular medical care. Let your doctor know you're trying massage and be sure to follow any standard treatment plans you have.
Most people can benefit from massage. However, massage may not be appropriate if you have:
Discuss the pros and cons of massage with your doctor, especially if you are pregnant or if you have cancer or unexplained pain.
Some forms of massage can leave you feeling a bit sore the next day. But massage shouldn't ordinarily be painful or uncomfortable. If any part of your massage doesn't feel right or is painful, speak up right away. Most serious problems come from too much pressure during massage.
You don't need any special preparation for massage. Before a massage therapy session starts, your massage therapist should ask you about any symptoms, your medical history and what you're hoping to get out of massage. Your massage therapist should explain the kind of massage and techniques he or she will use.
In a typical massage therapy session, you undress or wear loose-fitting clothing. Undress only to the point that you're comfortable. You generally lie on a table and cover yourself with a sheet. Your massage therapist will leave the room when you undress before the massage and when you dress after it. You can also have a massage while sitting in a chair, fully clothed. Your massage therapist should perform an evaluation through touch to locate painful or tense areas and to determine how much pressure to apply.
Depending on preference, your massage therapist may use oil or lotion to reduce friction on your skin. Tell your massage therapist if you might be allergic to any ingredients.
A massage session may last from 10 to 90 minutes, depending on the type of massage and how much time you have. No matter what kind of massage you choose, you should feel calm and relaxed during and after your massage. Breathe normally throughout your massage.
Your massage therapist may play music during your massage or talk to you, but you can tell him or her if you prefer quiet.
If a massage therapist is pushing too hard, ask for lighter pressure. Occasionally you may have a sensitive spot in a muscle that feels like a knot. It's likely to be uncomfortable while your massage therapist works it out. But if it becomes painful, speak up.
Ask your doctor or someone else you trust for a recommendation. Most states regulate massage therapists through licensing, registration or certification requirements.
Don't be afraid to ask a potential massage therapist such questions as:
Brush aside any thoughts that massage is only a feel-good way to indulge or pamper yourself. To the contrary, massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being, whether you have a specific health condition or are just looking for another stress reliever. You can even learn how to do self-massage or how to engage in massage with a partner at home.

In the past few years, I have visited many spas and wellness centers, clinics, and gyms which offer Swedish massage.
One thing that caught my eyes is that the massage therapists use lotion oil and then begins the therapy with general strokes. After that, they transitions to specific strokes to help relieve affected areas of a client’s body.
In this article, I will explain all you need to know about these massage movements.
The five basic massage movements are as follows:
These movements connect and complete the massage routine. This type of movement is done with your hand’s entire palm, applying even pressure to the area.
Besides, the pressure is applied towards the venous and lymphatic flow.
Petrissage is an effective technique that puts pressure on tissues and muscles. Petrissage kneading, stretching, and squeezing techniques boost blood circulation, reduce muscle spasms, and knots and improve muscle function.
This type of massage movement can help relieve muscle pain, relieve tension, and enhance recovery. Petrissage also boosts circulation and thus nourishes and feeds the tissues.
This specific technique is used commonly in Swedish massage. This is a rhythmic percussion that you can apply most often with a cupped hand, edge of the hand, or fingertips.
Tapotement strokes are highly stimulating. And you should only use it if you need a toning effect instead of relaxation.
These movements include the following; hacking, beating, pounding, pinching, and cupping.
Furthermore, when applying this technique, ensure you keep your wrists mobile and loose. That way, you keep your movements stimulating, light and springy.
In this type of massage movement, you only use thumbs and fingers to perform specific manipulations back and forth on small areas of the body. The frictions are applied both deeply and superficially, depending on the desired result.
Deep friction techniques are performed with force across the affected tissues. Also, you circularly perform this movement using your fingers, palm, or thumb pads.
Vibration refers to an effective massage technique used pre-event for stimulation. This massage movement aims to enhance flexibility, boost circulation, and improve mental readiness for activity and performance.
Specific massage techniques, such as vibration, are used to create a short but specific massage treatment.
Vibrations can release muscles at high speeds to prepare them for activity and promote performance.
The five basic strokes are enumerated below:
What are the four areas of manipulation in massage techniques?
The four basic massage strokes are as follows:
Tapotement is used commonly because it has a hyperemic effect. What this means is that it improves local blood circulation. And this, in turn, softens the underlying tissue. Also, when you use Tapotement alongside other massage techniques, it helps to reduce fatty deposits and also tone down flabby muscle areas.
When should you not use Tapotement?
It would help if you didn’t use Tapotement over bony areas. Instead, it would be best if you used it over fleshy areas of your body.
What is the effect of vibration o n your body?
Vibration movements can lead to changes in your joints, muscles, tendons, and bones. Consequently, these changes can affect the nervous system, collectively called Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS).
What are the four variations of Petrissage?
Here are the four variations of Petrissage movements:
When should you not use Petrissage?
There are certain circumstances when it’s not advisable to apply petrissage movements, and they are as follows:
How long should you perform friction massage?
Anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes is suitable.
No, it’s not. Petrissage involves the rolling, kneading, and pressing of skin, muscles, and tissues. On the other hand, friction movement utilizes a pointed object or thumb’s ball in small, circular motions. This allows it to penetrate deep muscles and tissues.
What are the steps in performing percussion technique in body massage?
Below are the following steps it takes in performing percussion technique in body massage:
Mentioned above are some of the most common types of massage movements that you are likely to experience with your massage therapist.
Remember to trust only licensed massage experts or therapists to apply these movements. Otherwise, an injury may result.
However, if you have doubts about booking a session with a therapist, using a percussion massager or a massage gun is another good option. This device is affordable, effective, and, more importantly, easy to use.
We recommend you try the Opove M3 Pro because it’s one of the best massage guns in the market today. You can read this review below to get more information about this Massager.
