Here's How Mass Effect: Andromeda Handles Sex and Romance
When Bioware first showed off Mass Effect: Andromeda , some fans didn’t care about the premise, the story, or the combat. The question many of us had was, “what aliens can I fuck this time?”
Fear not, thirsty reader, you can indeed fuck some aliens in Andromeda. Like many Bioware games before it, Andromeda allows you to build relationships with your crewmates, some of which culminate in strong friendships, while others bloom into full-on romances, sex scenes and all. (Spoilers and some NSFW content ahead.)
I was surprised to find that Andromeda lets you flirt with other characters almost immediately after meeting them. This threw me off. Realistically speaking, I would never just launch into the whole “ hey baby~ ” thing, because that would make me a creep. Worse, what if flirting too early caused some romance options to close down the line? I didn’t even know these people yet, I can’t just start flirting with them, I thought.
So, I chatted with everyone, got to know them a little. I was intrigued by Cora, my second-in-command, because she seemed like a badass. But there was some inherent iffiness to our potential relationship: she had been promised the role of Pathfinder, but it was unfairly awarded to me instead. I thought we might have to work that out and get to a good place first, where the power dynamics don’t feel off. But by putting off the flirting, I completely overthought how the mechanics in this game actually work. I kept waiting for the “right” time, except that time never came. (Too real.) I was almost near the end of the game when I realized, wait, I’ve barely even expressed interest in this woman. By the time our final big interaction happened, it was too late. I had blown it. Our relationship had gotten a little flirty, but it could never progress anymore. Only later did I realize Andromeda requires you to flirt consistently with people if you want to make them potential lovers.
Here’s Cora’s sex scene, if you’re curious:
I’d say this is the best sex scene in the game, which kinda makes sense, because Bioware highlights it even in its marketing material. There’s a sense of playfulness, coyness. The kisses look pretty decent considering the animation quality of some of the rest of the game, allowing it to approximate a sense of intimacy. I’m particularly taken by the part at the very end: it’s subtle, but you’re watching Ryder thrust into Cora. Usually, video game sex scenes don’t actually go there: they’ll show you some skin, some moans, and more vaguely imply things, but that’s about it.
Though things didn’t work out with Cora, Peebee the Asari was pretty forward with me—I mean, hell, the first time I met her, she literally jumped on me. So, I flirted back. It felt natural, unlike all of my other potential love interests. Peebee is interesting in that, if you want, you can pursue something completely casual with her, no strings attached. “Doesn’t matter if you have something else going on, I can be utterly discreet,” she tells you. Your relationship with her won’t necessarily affect your relationship with other people, not at first. The first time you sleep with her is pretty fun—you’re in zero G!
With Peebee’s talk of needing to relax, I could see where this was going a mile away...but I still enjoyed it.
Curiously, if you tell Peebee that you do want strings, you can get a different sex scene down the line:
As veteran fans know, the Asari can “meld” with partners. The Mass Effect Wiki describes as this as the unification of the nervous system, so that partners can share memories, thoughts, and feelings as one. What really intrigued me about this scene is that Peebee’s mind meld looks different than ones we’ve seen in previous games. Here, it’s an otherworldly purple vortex. In older games, we’ve seen very different kinds of melds with Liara, depending on the tone of the scene. It makes sense that melds can change depending on the emotion, but I hadn’t considered that individual Asari probably have very different experiences of the phenomenon, too. That’s cool.
Something that I don’t like about this scene, however, is that it plays out exactly the same if you’re playing as a male Ryder. Actually, given the specific animations, the entire thing makes more sense if you’re playing as a dude. Hard to feel special when you know it’s been recycled, you know?
Anyway, my tragedy was that I turned down Peebee when she became interested in a serious thing, because I was holding out for Cora. I ended up with nobody. Womp womp.
Let’s talk about the new alien joining the Bioware fuckhouse: Jaal the Angaran. I played as a male Ryder, so I couldn’t romance him. The thing about Jaal is, he’s a sweet boy. He wears his heart on his sleeve. He tells you about his insecurities, how he’s unsure of what to do with his life. I loved Jaal’s tenderness and was very sad that I couldn’t romance him, especially after watching his sex scene:
Andromeda sprawls in a way that makes it hard for any place to feel special, so this moment really stands out. “This is my favorite place in the universe,” Jaal declares. “Where’s yours?” Oof. My heart swells. All the same I am tickled that Jaal immediately gets down to work at the end of this scene. Get it, boy.
It’s so like Vetra to pull some strings to get you some real steak. The fact it isn’t appetizing doesn’t even matter, it’s an endearing gesture that humanizes Vetra in a way that most sex scenes in Mass Effect don’t (so to speak.) You’ll note, however, that this scene is way less explicit than the other ones. Bummer.
Don’t get me wrong, Liam is a good man who wants to make the world better. That idealism, combined with his accent, is a potent mix! But getting it on on that gross couch...not sexy. The fade to black doesn’t help either. Why can’t this be Cora-level spicy?
I loved my deep conversations with Suvi, her dorkiness, and her cute-as-hell accent. I wanted to read her thousand page manuscript on dirt. I wanted to be awkward with her....but she prefers women. Judging from this footage, however, I’m disappointed in the quality of the animation; it’s leagues away from the attention to detail put in, say, Cora’s scene. Are you starting to see a theme here?
Gil’s romance stood out to me, largely because of the poker scene. I got to know him in an interactive way, without actually having to shoot anybody. Low bar, I know, but we’re talking about video games here. Plus, Gil’s tension with the Salarian pilot was a fascinating look at the way Andromeda fleshes out its characters. Again, you’ll note that the actual sex scene isn’t very explicit, but hey, there’s a whole lot of making out, at least.
Something something, space ethics. No but seriously though, this is way better than punching journalists.
Reyes is a smooth smuggler, and my pick for the coolest NPC in the game. I loved getting to know the seedy underbelly of Kadara with Vidal, and was shocked at the big twist at the end of his storyline precisely because I romanced him. What a bastard. I loved him and his entire questline, even though it never gets particularly explicit. It kinda doesn’t have to—the quest itself is the thrilling part.
Overall, while Mass Effect: Andromeda’s sex doesn’t reach the amazing heights you see in Dragon Age Inquisition , and while most sex scenes pale in comparison to Cora’s I am happy that Bioware have given us more chances to fuck in space. That’s all I wanted, really.

So, I'm playing FemRyder. I decided to try and do all my Romances in a single playthrough, but to do so I had to do the save scum of reloading older saves. I did Vetra first, and apparently had some on top of clothes make out to the smell of a burnt cow. Followed that up with Keri since it was there, and apparently had drinks, just not at the bar >_>. Reloaded, did Suvi next. Made out in a lab, all on top of clothes again. I figured ME:A must have just decided to be a lot more conservative this time. Not happy with any of those romances, I decided to reload and do one more, this time with someone I felt that I actually developed a real bond with in the game. Jaal. Holy hell, soft core porn alert, that was steamy, and way more than I thought was going to happen. Seems kind of extreme though, considering how nearly platonic the previous sex scenes were.
My girl Cora though... Full frontal, a butt and some light thrusting before fading to black What GTA 5 can push boundaries but oh no not Mass Effect, can't show sex that's TOO EXTREME! Heck with Cora you don't even need the steamy sex scene you can choose just to be together for the night holding each other
So did the reloading get the trophy. I've only got the romances and 20 puzzles left for plat. Wish I would've read the trophy list before halfway through the game. Oh well, ng+

Oh well, ng+ Yeah. Basically, you don't commit to anyone until you are on the Journey to Meridian Quest where you land on Khi Tarisa. Manual Save, Commit to someone, do the Mission on Khi Tarisa, get the sex scene, Manual Save again, Reload first Save, Repeat. Technically, you only have to do the repeat once if you've been romancing Keri as well since you can do your committal and Keri, then reload and get Romance 3. Male Ryders apparently don't have a problem with this since Keri and Avela are both romancable without interfering with Crew Romances.
I romanced Jaal on my first playthrough and... was not expecting that sort of scene, I don't think I've ever been more uncomfortable in any video game or movie scene ever as I actively try to avoid scenes like that. (I suppose I could've avoided that scene by picking the other option though)

I think it's funny that there is no in between. There's only "aww, cute," romances and "let's make a porno," romances.

Not entirely true, I know you can choose to not have sex with Cora or Jaal when prompted though I initially thought it might've caused them to dislike Ryder but it doesn't change the romance at all apart from getting a less intense scene.

The Mass Effect: Andromeda Sex and Romance guide contains a List of Characters You Can Romance and information on the romantic encounters that are found in Mass Effect Andromeda.
Romance options vary depending on which Ryder twin you choose to play. While Scott and Sara Ryder can get the flirt option with numerous people (like Scott can flirt with Natalie Dormer's character, Dr. Lexi T'Perro) they can be rejected after the first instance if the character isn't romance-able or if they aren't attracted to that Ryder.
This iteration in the series opens more kinds of relationships for the protagonist. See the chart below for all of Ryder's romantic options. Most romances occur after having several conversations with an individual. You'll see a heart icon appear that'll allow Ryder to flirt. Some characters , like squadmates, won't let you progress in their relationship until you've completed their character-specific missions.
The way to romance characters is rather standard: flirt when you see the heart icon, and if the character is interested, they'll convey that to your chosen Ryder. Most will update their conversations after you complete a major mission or character specific mission that'll allow you to further your romance.
Flirting with every character at the beginning doesn't hurt your chances with the others later on.
Cora was the ranking officer on your father's Pathfinder team before you took over, and an accomplished soldier. Ryder's ascent to the role of Pathfinder may have initially been a point of contention between the two, but the two eventually manage to put aside their differences.
A former mercenary and smuggler, Vetra is now your requisitions officer on board the Tempest. While she presents a hard exterior (both emotionally and with her Turian exoskeleton), she cares greatly for her younger sister and the work the Tempest crew is doing.
For both the male or female Ryder, flirting with Vetra can begin almost immediately, but it doesn't become anything more than playful until after completing her loyalty mission.
After completing Hunting the Archon and Vetra 's Loyalty Mission, Means and Ends, you'll be able to take an excursion on Kadara with her if you've been flirting throughout the game. If you choose to affirm your relationship with Vetra at this point, you'll lock yourself out of all other romance options for the rest of the game.
Express your interest for Peebee right off the bat and she'll echo your interest. She's quite the flirt. Keep flirting (and helping her with her side missions ) until after visiting the vault on Aya. Find her on Aya in the angara Repository of History. She's drunk. You can comfort her about her studies.
When you return to the Tempest talk to her in her room. She's incredibly stressed, and SAM offers to let her use the escape pod to do some zero gravity relaxation. At this point Peebee asks Ryder if they'd like to join her. You're presented with two options:
If you kept things casual and you continue to interact with her, you'll notice Peebee starting to develop a fondess for Ryder. There are also moments where you can continue to flirt with her. After completing Peebee 's Loyalty Mission (you needde to have spared her rival) and after starting Journey to Meridian, Peebee wants to see you when you board the Tempest. She leaves a message with Poc proclaiming her love for Ryder, and at this point you can choose to be with her or reject her feelings.
Further into the game, after completing Peebee 's Loyalty Mission, you can continue to flirt with her. If during the end of her loyalty mission, you respected her wishes and let the thief survive, you'll receive an email from Peebee after completing the mission Journey to Meridian. Examine the gift she's left you to view her final romance sequence.
Liam is a Crisis response specialist and one of the initial members of your Pathfinder team. Liam and Ryder form a close bond as friends during their missions together, and if the player chooses that bond can become deeper.
If you've been flirting with Liam throughout the game, Ryder has the option to take things to the next level after completing his Loyalty Mission All In (this requires you to have established Outposts on at least three planets ). Liam will want to show you something on Eos after you earn his loyalty - visit the planet and choose the romance option when it appears in the dialogue.
Jaal is Angaran, a native of the Andromeda galaxy, and the newest member of the Tempest's crew. He is a romance option for the female Ryder.
Jaal can be flirted with once he comes onboard, and the relationship can be continued after completing his initial character mission Friend or Foe .
After this mission is complete, his Loyalty Mission will unlock - when you reach the end of this mission, do not act impulsively and attempt to shoot Akksul. Once the mission is complete, check your email and respond to Jaal 's offer to meet his family.
During this interaction, you can commit to Jaal 's relationship - this will prevent you from being able to romance any other crew members you were previously flirting with. Then, after completing the mission Journey to Meridian, you'll receive an invitation from Jaal to meet him on Aya. This mission will complete the romance quest.
Keri T'Vessa is a video journalist on the Nexus , producing a series of videos about the progress of the Initiative. She requests that Ryder be one of her subjects, and she can be flirted with during the interview sessions.
Despite a mutual interest between them, Keri is insistent that she not become romantically entangled with the subject of an ongoing interview. That said, she extends the offer to "get to know one another better" after the interview series is complete.
She also doesn't seem to be interested in an exclusive relationship, saying "I wouldn't interfere with your life, what happens with me stays with me."
