Mass Effect 2 players can start a romance with Tali in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition by following all the steps in this guide.
Tali is a squad member and potential love interest for those playing as a male Shepard in Mass Effect 2 , which is included in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition . She is part of Shepard’s first mission working with Cerberus, but a romantic storyline can’t continue between the two until her loyalty mission is completed.
This is the first time Tali can be romanced in the series, and players must ensure their Shepard pursues a relationship with her in the second game if they wish to romance her in Mass Effect 3 . Players can find out how to do this exactly in the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition guide below.
There are a few essential things players must do to see Tali's complete romantic subplot in Mass Effect 2 :
The first step in starting a relationship with Tali is to recruit her for the suicide mission in Mass Effect 2 by heading off to the Geth occupied Quarian colony of Haestrom. Players can choose any dialogue options during this mission, as none will lock out a relationship with Tali.
Once the mission has been completed, Tali can be found in Engineering on the Normandy in Mass Effect 2 . However, there won’t be an opportunity to start a romance with her until her loyalty mission has been completed. Ensure Shepard does not hand over evidence against her father at the end of the mission, or Tali will not be loyal, and consequently can’t be romanced .
When the loyalty mission is completed, players can now visit Tali in Engineering to take the next steps in the duo’s relationship. She will talk about what occurred, but the conversation will end. Start another with her after this to ask to talk about her. After she mentions trusting Shepard, pick “Are you making a pass at me?”, and then “I’m interested” when the options appear.
Keep checking back with Tali after completing main missions and side quests, and the romantic subplot will eventually continue when players ask to talk with her again. Make sure to pick the “No, you weren’t” and then “I want to be with you” options . Anything else can be picked after this, unless players have also been romancing Miranda in Mass Effect 2 , or Jack. Tell Tali Shepard only wants to be with her to continue the relationship. Additional questions on the left side of the dialogue wheel can be asked without damaging the romance.
Asking to talk with Tali later will start a conversation about the safety of their romantic plans, so make sure to choose “Only if it’s safe” to continue with the romance .
Once all the steps above have been completed and players are about to go on the suicide mission, Tali will come to Shepard’s quarters. Choose “Tali Relax, I want this” to start the small romantic scene with her . She must survive the trip through the Omega 4 Relay to continue romancing her with this save transfer in Mass Effect 3 .

Tali'Zorah is one of the most beloved characters in the Mass Effect trilogy. A male Shepard can romance her once they recruit her in Mass Effect 2.
Of all the companions in the Mass Effect series, fans tend to have a soft spot for Tali'Zorah vas Neema (later vas Normandy), the quarian tech wizard who is by Shepard's side from the very start of the trilogy. BioWare has made something of a name for itself creating sweeping RPGs full of colorful companions with unique personalities, values, and reactions to the player character and each other. Many of these companions also become romance options for the player character, something fans have come to expect and love about the games. Like other popular squadmate Garrus Vakarian, despite being part of Shepard's team and loyal from the outset, Tali is not romanceable until Mass Effect 2 .
Tali's romantic arc is exclusive to a male Shepard and has a few major requirements to trigger. Though it is clear from the moment she has been recruited on Haestrom that she has developed something of a crush on Shepard, she will not consider him romantically until her loyalty mission is complete and Shepard has expressed explicit interest in her. Though a player may pursue Tali, it is possible for her to die during the endgame Suicide Mission, cutting the romance short. If she lives, however, players can choose to continue the romance into Mass Effect 3 . Here's how Shepard can begin a romance with Tali in Mass Effect 2 .
Tali is the first former squadmate Shepard encounters following the Lazarus Project in Mass Effect 2. However, when he finds her, she will be extremely distrustful of him and his shaky alliance with Cerberus. She will decline to join Shepard's team, should he ask.
Following the mandatory Horizon mission , Shepard will receive a dossier about Tali to recruit her. They will need to travel to Haestrom and rescue her from a Geth attack to finally convince her to join them. During this mission, to have a better chance at securing Tali's Loyalty later, players should make sure to save Kal'Reegar by convincing him to stand down.
Once she is on board, at some point when Shepard speaks to Yeoman Kelly Chambers, she will mention noticing Tali's body language around Shepard and suggest the quarian might want to be "more than friends." Kasumi will also point this out to Shepard and warn him to be good to her.
Shepard must complete Tali's Loyalty mission, Treason, before any romantic dialogue will trigger. While not technically a requirement for every romance in Mass Effect 2 , players absolutely need to keep and maintain Tali's Loyalty to progress the romance. There are a few ways to do so:
The only option players should not choose is to present the evidence of Tali's father's crimes. This will upset Tali, losing her Loyalty.
Following the mission, Shepard can follow up with Tali in Engineering. The first time, she merely thanks him. The next time, she will mention the trip caused her to come down with an illness. During this conversation, Shepard needs to ask Tali about life in her suit. Tali will describe the experience and tell Shepard the most intimate way quarians express trust and intimacy comes from linking suit environments. She admits she would only want to link suits with him.
Here, players should choose the I trust you too dialogue option. In the next wheel, they can ask if she is making a pass at him, but need to pick I'm interested to officially begin the romance arc.
The next time Shepard talks to Tali, he can progress the romance by asking to talk about her. In the resulting cutscene in the Normandy's Core, players must choose No, you weren't to reassure her. They can ask the two questions in the next dialogue wheel but should eventually select I want to be with you . She will promise to do some research to figure out how to make a physical relationship work.
The next time Shepard talks with Mordin Solus , the professor will also offer advice about human-quarian romance, as he does with any alien Shepard chooses to romance. While not required, this scene can be a humorous look into the ways others on the squad see the budding relationship.
If Shepard chooses to recruit Legion and complete their Loyalty mission, they will return to the Normandy to find Tali and Legion in a heated argument. If he has a high enough Paragon or Renegade score, they can use the Charm/Intimidate dialogue option to break up the fight without taking sides. If he does need to take sides, he must side with Tali. This will lose Legion's Loyalty, which can sometimes be regained in a later conversation. If Shepard takes Legion's side, he loses Tali's Loyalty and, even if he manages to get it back, she will stop responding to romantic advances.
Ahead of the Suicide Mission, Tali will meet Shepard in his cabin, saying she has taken antibiotics and supplements to bolster her immune system. Players can choose to end the romance here, or they can select Tali, relax. I want this to reassure her. At this point, she will remove her mask and kiss Shepard, and the scene will fade to black.
It is important to keep Tali alive during the Suicide Mission . If Tali is chosen as the Technical Specialist, Shepard will need to make sure to open the vents in the Collector base before she burns to death. They will also need to choose appropriate leaders for the other teams to prevent her from being accidentally killed later in the mission. She should be part of Shepard's squad when taking on the final boss, as long as she is Loyal.
Should Tali survive the events of Mass Effect 2 and the player continues the game following the credits, they can talk to her again in Engineering. She will mention she has fallen ill, most likely from their intimate evening. Choosing the I'd like to talk about you dialogue option will prompt her to continue talking about the night they shared together and ask if Shepard is still interested. He will need to choose the second dialogue option, Only if it's safe . Later, Shepard will have the option to use the Intercom in their cabin and call Tali up to the room. The two can sit together, sleep together, or cuddle. The romance can continue to the end of Mass Effect 3 .

There are several romance options available in Mass Effect 2 but Tali’ Zorah nar Rayya is one of the most popular characters to romance for good reason. She’s kind and believes in a better galaxy just like Shepard.
Mass Effect 2 released in a different and worse world than we currently live in so Tali is only able to be romanced by male Shepard. Romancing Tali isn’t too difficult but there are some important steps to remember beyond what gender you select for your character.
Hopefully the next console remaster (whenever that happens) includes mod support because the PC community has a lot more freedom with relationships. I’ll try to be vague and light on spoilers so this can be referenced and used early in your playthrough.
The romance cannot be started until after Tali’s Loyalty Mission is completed and it needs to be completed without using evidence against her father. If she’s exiled then she can still be romanced but the evidence against her father cannot be used. Keep this in mind when going through that mission.
Speaking with Tali shortly after completing that mission will lead to her speaking about her fever after inquiring about her and how she’s doing. She will mention linking suit environments, which is an intimate activity among quarians and that Shepard is the person she feels closest to.
Respond with anything other than ending the conversation and then for the next dialogue option, tell her you’re interested. There are two other conversations that will take place before the romance section. These can be started after completing a mission in between each one.
The second conversation centers around if a relationship can work. Maintain your interest after telling her you’d like to talk about her. If you already started to pursue other characters then it will come up but you can reiterate you’re only interested in Tali.
The third conversation can get you if you’re not paying attention. The dialogue to continue pursuing the relationship isn’t on top or bottom; it’s in the middle of the conversation wheel. You need to select “Only if it’s safe.”
If you choose the other options then the romance option will end. If you make a mistake then just reload a save; the game thankfully autosaves a lot. After this is all finished, Tali is set as your romance interest, which will initiate after the Suicide Mission starts.
There is one other issue that can come up that can prevent the romance from happening that you’ll want to take note of and prepare for. If you bring Legion into your squad then there will be confrontation between Tali and Legion.
If your Paragon or Renegade skills are high enough then you can get through the situation without losing the loyalty of either party member — and without losing Tali in the process.
If your Paragon or Renegade skills aren’t high enough then you’ll need to pick a party member to side with and you’ll need to pick Tali if you’re wanting to romance her of course. It’s good to focus on Paragon or Renegade as much as possible for this confrontation and other situations in the games.
It’s okay to deter from one moral side sometimes but there are few rewards for Shepards that take the middle road.

Tali is one of the OG members of Shepard’s squad. She appears in the first game, rarely leaves his side throughout, and is a playable squadmate in each and every title. It’s not surprising, then, to learn that Tali is a romanceable option in Mass Effect. Here’s what you need to know about how to romance Tali in Mass Effect1, 2 and 3 .
So first things first. While Tali is a squadmate in Mass Effect 1, and is a romance option in the later games, is not romanceable in the first game. This might come as a bummer for someone who was planning on hooking up with everyone’s favorite Quarian in all three games, but that’s the breaks.
There’s not really an established reason why exactly, but the prevailing theory is that Tali is just a bit too young and isn’t looking for love in the first game. She’s a Quarian refugee, she’s on a pilgrimage, and then on top of all of that, she gets dragged into a conflict with Saren and the Reapers. She, understandably, has a lot going on.
Fortunately for all you Tali fans out there, she is a romance option in the second game, Mass Effect 2. However, there are a few things you need to know.
For one, she is only a romance option for Male Shepard players. Second and most obviously, she must actually be recruited into your squad to be an option. It is possible to skip Dossier: Tali and never recruit her, and thus, leaving her to die in the second game. Harsh.
After recruiting her, make sure to spend time talking to her after each mission and exhaust her dialog. Once you’ve recruited her and secured her loyalty , spend some time talking to her some more and she’ll begin to get a bit flirtatious and lead on that she has a crush on you. Make sure that you reciprocate and let her know that you feel the same way about her.
When given the option, tell her that you want to be with her and not anyone else. Continue to visit her after each mission, and reciprocate her advances as you build your relationship.
Eventually, as long as you don’t decide to pull the plug, it will lead to a romance scene and you will have locked Tali in as your partner in Mass Effect 2.
First things first, ensure that Tali survives the final events of Mass Effect 2 otherwise… yeah you’re officially broken up and back on the market to say the least. You also must have romanced Tali in Mass Effect 2 to romance her in Mass Effect 3 . If you did not choose Tali in 2, she will not be an option in 3.
You will eventually meet back up and recruit Tali into your party and will be given the opportunity to invite her to your private quarters. Make sure that you accept and continue your relationship with her.
