This page of IGN's Mass Effect 2 wiki guide is all about romancing Jack, including what you need to do to initiate and Lock In the Romance in Mass Effect 2, and rekindle it in Mass Effect 3.
Jack is only available for Male Shepards, who can begin Romancing her after you've completed her Loyalty Mission, Jack: Project Zero, in Mass Effect 2. Once you complete it, you can begin courting her, which happens in three conversation stages. Each conversation stage is reached by initiating the one before it and then completing any Mission or Assignment.
The very first "romantic" opportunity you have is in your third conversation with her before getting her Loyalty Mission. After you first recruit her in Dossier: The Convict, you can pick "I want to talk" to get to know her. When you conclude by picking "We'll talk again", she'll ask why Shepard is trying to get to know her and suggests that it's only so he can have sex with her.
This is a very important decision. If you pick "Yes, I want you", you'll have a sexual encounter with her. HOWEVER, Jack will then refuse to talk to Shepard aboard the Normandy for the rest of the game, having concluded that it's all you wanted her for. If you want to pursue a serious relationship, you need to choose one of the other two options instead.
If you declined casual sex with Jack after first talking with her aboard the Normandy, then you can go for a more serious relationship after completing Jack's Loyalty Mission. At first however things transpire as normal in the aftermath of her Loyalty Mission; you should avoid picking the lower-right options on the Dialogue Wheel so that you don't upset her.
The First Stage truly begins in your next conversation. Here, pick "I'm interested" and avoid picking "Agreed. No romance" if it pops up. You can technically pick "You don't sound convinced", but this greatly confuses Jack and that may not be what you want to have happen.
At this stage, pick "I want to talk about us" at the start of the conversation, then avoid picking "Never mind". Here you'll find out why Jack is so abrasive about the idea of a relationship with you. At the end of the conversation, you'll want to pick "I'm staying right here" to continue the Romance. As you'll learn, this is far more about how Jack feels about it than with any other relationship in the game.
If you've also courted Tali or Miranda, this stage is when Jack will bring it up and you'll have to sort it out. If you choose Jack over them in this conversation, you'll permenantly dump them for Jack.
In this stage, once again pick "I want to talk about it" to begin, then pick "Take your time". This isn't considered a Lock In as it's still possible to destroy the relationship in the Romance scene itself, but it does mean the Romance scene will happen at the end of the game.
If you pick "This is taking too long" followed by "I want to see someone else" or "You don't need me", you'll end the relationship, which seriously upsets Jack to the point that she'll angrily swear at you to leave any time you try to talk to her on the Normandy.
Once you complete both Jack and Miranda's Loyalty Mission, they'll get into a big fight in Miranda's office, and it's your job as the Commander to calm them down. If you don't want to jeapardize a Romance with Jack, you'll need to avoid upsetting her here.
In order to do that, you should pick any option other than "Too bad, Jack": this will permanently halt the Romance, even if you talk with her after to restore her Loyalty. Picking "Back off, Miranda" will avoid this, however this will render Miranda Disloyal and you'll have to use a Persuasion option with her after to make her Loyal again.
The best option is to pick one of the Persuasion options, either "This is a distraction" (Charm) or "This ends now!" (Intimidate). This will cause both of them to stand down without jeopardizing their Loyalty or a Romance with Jack, however you'll need to have a very high Paragon or Renegade meter in order to choose one of these.
Once you have the Romance locked in, Jack will appear in Shepard's Cabin after you initiate the Suicide Mission via the Omega-4 Relay. Pick "I'm glad you're here" to properly Lock In the relationship and initiate Shepard and Jack's night together. If you pick "Can I believe you?", you'll break up with Jack and she'll angrily storm out of the room. You'll be unable to talk with her on the Normandy afterwards.
As Jack is a member of Normandy's crew, you must also make sure she survives the Suicide Mission at the end of Mass Effect 2. To do that, first make sure that you have as many Squad Mates Loyal to you as possible before grabbing the Reaper IFF, and upgrade the Normandy's Shields, Armour and Cannon at the Research Terminal. The Armor in particular is very important because Jack is guaranteed to be killed if you DON'T upgrade it.
During the Suicide Mission itself, a Loyal Jack is a good pick as the Biotic Specialist for "The Long Walk" through the Seeker Swarms, but is a poor choice as a Fireteam Leader or as a Vent Specialist.
If you do not have a Loyal Samara / Morinth, avoid picking Jack as a Squad Mate for "The Long Walk" through the Seeker Swarms, as she'll be put at risk in that case. If Jack isn't Loyal but you still want to keep her around, avoid picking her for any defined role or as a Squad Mate: that will get either herself or somebody else killed.
Jack is one of the only Romantic partners in Mass Effect 3 who's found in missable content. You find her in the Grissom Academy: Emergency Evacuation Mission, which is unlocked after Priority: Palaven. All you need to do is start and complete the Mission for you to reunite with her.
Uniquely, this Mission is one of the few which can expire, specifically after you begin Priority: The Citadel II. If this happens, the Mission has been failed and you won't be able to meet Jack.
Once you've recovered Jack from Grissom Academy, you can find her in the symbolically-named Purgatory Bar (you rescued Jack from the prison ship Purgatory in Mass Effect 2). Here is where you can both re-kindle and Lock In a Romance with her.
In order to Lock her back In, you'll want to pick "I still want you". To break up with her, pick "Let's call it quits", permanently ending your Romance with her and letting you pursue somebody else.
Unfortunately further interactions with Jack are very limited after that point. If you have the Citadel DLC, you'll be able to have unique scenes with her on the Silversun Strip and your Personal Apartment, including the big Party. That aside, you'll be able to call her for one last exchange in the calm before the final push towards the Conduit beam.

Jack isn’t one of the original members of Shepard’s crew, but she definitely leaves a lasting impression from the very first moment that she appears in the series . She doesn’t join until after Mass Effect 1, so here’s how to romance Jack in Mass Effect 2 and 3 .
First of all, you need to be a male Shepard to romance Jack. After you’ve recruited her by completing Dossier: The Convict, she’ll be on the lower level of the Normandy all alone. After a few conversations, you’ll get the chance to have a one-night stand type fling with her.
She thinks you’re talking to her just for sex and she makes that very clear. Be sure to decline her offer by avoiding the “Yes, I want you” option, because if you don’t, she’ll never open up to you for the rest of the game, and a romance will be impossible.
You can finally start to open up her romance storyline after completing her loyalty mission, Jack: Subject Zero . After a few more short conversations, make sure to choose options that don’t set her off, and finally, you’ll get the chance to choose “I’m interested” which will begin the romance.
Once you complete both Jack’s and Miranda’s loyalty missions (in either order), they’ll get into an argument. At that point, you’ll need to choose who to side with , or settle the argument yourself if you have enough Paragon or Renegade points to do so. If you don’t, side with Jack. Miranda’s loyalty can be regained through another conversation with her with another Paragon/Renegade check right after the argument.
Some time after saying you’re interested, you’ll have the option to say “I want to talk about us” which allows you to learn more about Jack. Make sure to assure her that you’re staying with her. In following conversations, Jack will open up even more, and when she does, give her time to do so. Rushing her, cutting her off, or not showing interest can lead to ending the romance.
Finally, Jack will enter your room just before the Suicide Mission. Choose “I’m glad you’re here” to lock in the romance for Mass Effect 3. Make sure she survives the mission to see her again in the sequel.
Jack will no longer be a part of the regular crew on the Normandy in Mass Effect 3, but she’ll still make several appearances. However, she’s completely missable, so be sure to accept and go through with the mission at Grissom Academy after completing Priority: Palaven in order to see her.
Once you’ve completed the Grissom Academy mission, Jack can be found at the Purgatory bar on the Citadel. Speak to her there to confirm the romance and lock it in once again. She isn’t in the game much beyond this interaction, except for in the Citadel DLC questline which is now included in the Legendary Edition.
Those Citadel quests will provide a bit of extra fun dialogue with Jack, but outside of that, you’ll only have one last call with her before the final mission in Mass Effect 3.

Mass Effect 2 writer Brian Kindregan reveals that Jack was originally going to be a FemShep romance option, but this was changed to avoid controversy.
Mass Effect 2 fans might be interested to know that Jack, the powerful biotic squadmate and potential male Shepard love interst, was originally intended to be pansexual and a romance option for female Shepard. Like any other BioWare title, the Mass Effect series allows players to build up a romantic story arc in each installment that eventually builds up to a passionate love scene just before the final mission.
Unfortunately, this feature led to a small-but-still-noteworthy controversy following the original Mass Effect’s release in 2007, as Fox News hosted a panel criticizing both the game’s sexual content and its inclusion of an "LGBT" romance option in squadmate Liara T’Soni (despite her race being mono-gendered). Most of the claims made during this segment were blatantly false, such as accusations of Mass Effect being a “ rape simulator ” and a comparison to the porn film Debbie Does Dallas , and both it and the brief controversy it generated are rightfully looked back upon with ridicule by actual fans of the franchise. However, it still triggered a wave of unwanted media attention for BioWare at the time, enough that the developer altered some of its plans for romance options in the 2010 sequel.
In an interview by The Gamer , Mass Effect 2 writer Brian Kindregan revealed that Jack was originally meant to be pansexual, as well as a romance option for female Shepard as well as the male version. The cut Jack content went so far into development before scrapped that actual Jack dialogue was recorded that better reflects the character as intended. Kindregan recalls:
“ I was trying to chart out the arc of [Jack’s] romance, which for much of the development - it was actually very late that it became a male/female-only romance. The development team of Mass Effect 2 was a pretty progressive, open-minded team, but I think there was a concern at pretty high levels that if [the first] Mass Effect, which only had one gay relationship, Liara - which on paper was technically not a gay relationship because she was from a mono-gendered species - I think there was a concern that if that had drawn fire, that Mass Effect 2 had to be a little bit careful. ”
Backing up Kindregan’s statements is Jack’s voice actress, Courtenay Taylor, who expressed that as she read the script for Mass Effect 2 she was under the impression that her character was meant to be a part of the LGBT community, only for this to be changed later on. She reflected, “ It’s funny to me because my understanding was always that she was pansexual. So I don’t know if that’s just something I inferred from the character or something that she said that maybe got cut. I was surprised there wasn’t a female romance possible because that was my understanding. I think it was the time, you know? ”
Aside from the Asari characters like Liara and Samara and bridge-mate Kelly Chambers (who was a minor character, and whose romance doesn’t even lock Shepard, unlike other paths), the Mass Effect series would work toward including more LGBT romance options in its third installment such as Steve Cortez, Samantha Traynor, and longtime squadmate Kaidan Alenko . Still, it's disappointing that BioWare had to compromise its plans for Jack in Mass Effect 2 , especially since it was done to accommodate the whims of closed-minded pundits who never actually played the original game.
