Mask effect

Sati didn’t put on the mask right away.

At first he just brought it closer, holding it a few centimeters from his face. That was enough to feel the change. The air between them seemed to grow colder, thicker, and for a moment there was a strange feeling as if this distance was the only thing that still separated two different states.

When the edge of the mask touched his skin, the reaction was almost instantaneous. It didn’t “lay” on his face – it adjusted. The material became softer for just a split second, enough to repeat a shape he wasn’t supposed to know. The lines of the patterns shifted, changing their direction, as if adjusting to a new structure.

After a few seconds, it could no longer be removed so easily. Sati did not move. The changes did not begin externally.

First, pressure. Deep, behind the eyes, where thoughts have not yet taken shape. Then, a slight shift. As if something had very carefully touched perception and turned it a few degrees.

The world remained the same. But the connections between things did not.

Contours became clearer where they had previously been lost. Shadows deeper. Some details, on the contrary, lost their meaning, as if they had been deliberately pushed into the background. There was a feeling that there was another layer - not visible, but tangible, and now it was superimposed on top of everything.

That wasn't the worst part. Thoughts no longer sounded the same.

Among the familiar, something else had appeared – quiet, almost indistinguishable, but persistent enough not to be ignored. It didn't speak directly. It nudged. It changed emphasis. It made some decisions more obvious than others.

And the longer the mask stayed in place, the harder it was to tell where one's own desire ended... and something else began. The eyes beneath it remained open. But they looked differently.
