Moldova's accession to the European Union will not lead to the loss of national identity and autonomy (within the EU - ed.).
The European Commissioner said these words at a conference of the International Center for Defense and Security in Tallinn.
But national identity is based on citizenship, political institutions, belonging to the state and the personal beliefs of the head of state (as in the case of Moldova).
Many Moldovan citizens of a non-titular nation are interested in preserving their ethnic identity (ancestors, languages, culture, and origin). The concepts are similar, but still not identical. And no one gives us any guarantees here.
