Jean Fergusson played Dorothy Hoyle in Coronation Street
Fergusson was in the comedy play Two Into One at the Menier Theatre in London in 2014
Jean Fergusson, who played Marina in Last of the Summer Wine for 25 years, has died at the age of 74.
Fergusson played the opinionated Marina in 216 episodes of the show from 1985.
She also appeared several times in ITV soap Coronation Street, most recently playing the part of Dorothy Hoyle until 2011.
She also had a theatre career and was nominated for an Olivier award in 1998 for playing British comic, actress and music hall performer Hylda Baker.
Comedy actress Vicki Michelle, best known for 'Allo 'Allo, paid tribute to Fergusson.
Shocked & saddened to hear Jean Fergusson has passed Lovely lady, fabulous actress. Saw her Sunday at #SuPollard ’s birthday, said she wasn’t feeling well. @benstockbiz and I planned to take her out next week. Fergusson was born on 30 December 1944, and grew up in the village of Woolley near Wakefield.
"I have very fond memories of a happy childhood, and going to the village school - long closed now, of course," she said in 2009. "We'd stretch a line across the road and make that into our 'tennis net'. There was so little traffic back then that we rarely had to take it down."
The family later moved to Wales, where Fergusson learned her acting craft at The Castle (the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama).
Before getting the role of Marina in Last of the Summer Wine, Fergusson had forged a successful career in theatre and was rarely out of work.
Her first job at the Oldham Coliseum lasted two years and saw her in a variety of roles and touring productions around the UK.
Fergusson also appeared in several television shows, including All Creatures Great & Small, Crossroads and The Practice, before taking on the role that would define her for the next two decades.
Set in West Yorkshire, Last of the Summer Wine, which began in 1973 and ended in 2010, soon became the nation's favourite comedy. At its peak it was watched by 18 million people.
Its success came from the seemingly incongruous mix of madcap capers carried out by a group of young at-heart pensioners.
Fergusson's casting as the mini-skirt wearing, peroxide blonde Marina, was in fact first performed in a stage version of the show.
The character was such a hit that TV director Roy Clarke decided to incorporate Marina - along with the characters of Howard and Pearl - into his television series.
Hapless Howard was the love of Marina's life and the pair would travel up hill and down dale on their bikes or scooter, when Howard managed to find time away from his domineering wife Pearl.
Marina's outfits were characteristically skimpy and as Fergusson grew older, she admitted to having become less and less comfortable, in more ways than one.
"Funnily enough more towards the end [of the series], I was always the one in the low-cut blouse and the mini skirt or the shorts," she said when appearing on quiz show Pointless Celebrities in 2017.
"When I got - shall we say - a little bit older, it wasn't quite the same getting all dressed up in the morning in a pair of little mini shorts and a very low-cut blouse.
"But we battled through. We got on the bike and off we went."
While making Last of the Summer Wine in the 1990s, Fergusson was researching and writing the one-woman show She Knows, You Know! about the life and decline of Hylda Baker.
Fergusson had admired Baker since her childhood and when she took the show to London's West End stage she found herself receiving the Olivier nomination for best entertainment show.
Fergusson's first foray into Coronation Street came whilst she was still making Last of the Summer Wine. In 1999, she arrived to play the role of Mrs Mallett. She later returned to the soap after the end of Last of the Summer Wine to play Dorothy Hoyle from 2010 to 2011.
In 2014, Fergusson sold off the bike she was given from Last of the Summer Wine, when she moved from Yorkshire to London and realised she had no space for it. It made £500 at auction.
"If I could have kept it, I would have done," said Fergusson, "but I'll let some wonderful fan have the pleasure of it."

A porn star who accused fellow adult actor James Deen of sexual assault has been found dead at the age of 31 following a 'possible overdose'.
Amber Rayne, who worked in the industry for 10 years, passed away at her home in the Sun Valley neighborhood of Los Angeles.
LA Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told Daily Mail Online a friend who was with the actress at the time reported that she had died from a 'possible overdose'.
Porn star Amber Rayne has been found dead at the age of 31 following a possible overdose. She is one of eight women in the adult industry who have accused fellow actor James Deen of sexual assault
Rayne (left) claims Deen (right) sexually assaulted her on set. She accused him of punching her in the face during a brutal attack
Deen has vigorously denied the accusations. Hours after her death, he posted a mysterious message on Twitter saying: 'These levels of disrespect are powerfully uncool'
He said the exact cause of death may not be known until the autopsy is carried out or the results of the toxicology report come back, which could take up to six weeks.
Rayne, whose real name was Meghan Wren, was one of eight women who came forward claiming Dean sexually assaulted them both on and off movie sets.
In an interview with CFM in 2013, she revealed she had struggled with uterine cancer and had undergone 'relentless' chemotherapy.
Last year she revealed how difficult it was for her to come forward with the allegations, as she has become friends with Deen in the years since the incident. It allegedly took place on the set of one of her first films.
LA County Coroner's office told Daily Mail Online a friend with her at the time said her death could have been from a possible overdose
Deen has vigorously denied the accusations. Hours after her death, he posted a mysterious message on Twitter saying: 'These levels of disrespect are powerfully uncool'.
It is believed she died on Saturday night or Sunday morning. An autopsy is set to take place at the end of this week.
Earlier this year, Rayne attended the Adult Video News Awards alongside adult film actor Jack Vegas
None of her social media accounts suggested that anything was wrong. On Saturday she suggested a friend was coming to her apartment to share pizza and cookie dough ice cream.
Director Stormy Daniels, share his devastation after her death.
She told the first outlet to report her death, AVN : 'She was a really good friend, and one of the best actresses and performers that I've ever had the pleasure to work with, and I'm just glad that I had the opportunity to work with her and call her a friend.
Her stepmother wrote on Facebook: 'Pauls eldest daughter left us yesterday. RIP our sweet Meghan Wren.'
Originally from Detroit, Amber headed to Los Angeles with a touring musical production with a BA in Theater Arts and a Minor in Art History from California State University-Los Angeles.
She started in the adult industry when she was in her early twenties, with her first production in 2005.
Rayne claimed Deen called her 'b****' in the middle of a sex scene, at which point he punched her in the face and began to have intercourse with her so forcefully that she was left bleeding.
In an interview with the Daily Beast in December 2015, she said the decision to come forward with the allegations was hard as she was friends with Deen.
She said: 'We’re friends now and I’ll sometimes bring it up as a joke and you can see it makes him physically uncomfortable when I do, so he does realize something was wrong that day.
'I thought it was an insecurity phase. He was just starting out, he was still a young punk kid coming in and I still didn’t know what the game was.'
She described her horrific ordeal in the interview.
'His face twisted and he came down on my face two times- close-fisted,' she said.
She said he punched her in the face while they were still having anal intercourse and proceeded to assault her.
Her autopsy is set for later on this week. The actress was born Meghan Wren, was an activist for cancer awareness and documented some of her health struggles
Rayne is pictured having dinner with her mother. In a 2013 interview she said that, aside from her career, she thought she was a normal, everyday girl
In 2011, Rayne marked National Cancer Survivors Day with a post revealing that she had survived
'He just starts shoving things in to the point where he ripped it and I bled everywhere. There was so much blood I couldn’t finish the scene,' she said.
She later had to receive stitches.
Away from her work she helped raise awareness and money for the treatment of lymphatic cancers after having fought through stage 3 Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma herself.
She was an avid horse fan and frequently posted pictures of herself riding on social media.
In the 2013 with CFM, she said: 'Aside from my career I'm still what could be considered the average everyday girl.
The accusations against Deen began on November 30, 2015, when his ex-girlfriend Stoya took to Twitter saying: 'James Deen held me down and f***ed me while I said no, stop, used my safe word. I just can't nod and smile when people bring him up anymore.'
That was quickly followed by two other accusations, one from ex-porn star Tori Lux who claims he violently hit her and held her to his crotch on set and then from adult film actress Ashley Fires, who says he tried to rape her in the shower on one occasion.
Porn star Amber Rayne revealed to The Daily Beast that after she called Deen a 'b****' during a shoot, he had anal intercourse with her so violently that she bled and needed stitches.
The accusations against Deen (right) began on November 30, 2015 when his ex-girlfriend Stoya (left) took to Twitter saying: 'James Deen held me down and f***ed me while I said no, stop, used my safe word. I just can't nod and smile when people bring him up anymore.'
Porn actress Kora Peters also told The Daily Beast that she refused anal intercourse during one shoot but that Deen shoved her face into a sofa and forced himself on her.
Another unnamed woman told the LAist she was raped by Deen as a crowd watched inside a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009.
Porn actress Nicki Blue, also told Daily Mail Online in an exclusive interview that Deen raped her with a beer bottle in an off-camera attack at a wrap party.
Another one of Deen's ex-girlfriends, porn star Joanna Angel who he dated for six years until 2010, angrily blasted him on Twitter saying, 'He's dead on the inside and dead to me. He's literally the worst person I've ever met.'
She also claimed that one time while they were having sex, he held her head underwater for so long that she thought she was going to drown.
Most recently, Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham told Daily Mail Online exclusively that she was raped, drugged, and abused by Deen over several months in 2013, when they were casually dating.
Farrah told Daily Mail Online: 'James Deen raped me for his benefit of fame. He conspired against me with others that I thought were my friends at the time and that was very hurtful.
Farrah did not want to elaborate on exactly when the alleged assault by Deen occurred and under what circumstances, but it is clear from the X-rated tape that Farrah was an eager participant in sex acts with him during its making.
Farrah never went to the police with her rape allegations and instead claims she handled the matter privately with her lawyers, she told Daily Mail Online.
'Music is a rather large passion of mine and consumes a considerable amount of my time; whether it be dancing to it, playing my Les Paul, or hanging out listening to local bands music is usually involved.
'I am also a huge gamer (please translate as you will, but often it flat out means nerd), but I've found it works to my advantage as often times after a scene, the guys will challenge me to whatever games are on set that day.
Rayne said it was difficult for her to come forward with the allegations as they were good friends
'I also find myself staying active through dance (jazz, hip hop, ballet), soccer, softball, swimming and running (yes I run nearly 5 miles a day...don't believe me? Ask my dog lol she's there) I have only recently decreased my activity mainly due to my struggles with uterine cancer and the relentless effects of chemo. (uh how to put this kindly...it sucks!! yeah that'll do).'
In 2011, Rayne marked National Cancer Survivors Day with a Twitter post revealing that she had survived.
She wrote: 'Today is National Cancer Survivors Day...Im thankful to be celebrating that and that I did survive and am surviving in order to be here to.'
Deen's unsettling comments about rape on social media in the past have been brought to life as he faces continued allegations.
He has frequently made light of rape and assault on social media, writing in both February 2011 and April 2012; 'It's not rape if you yell surprise.'
Deen also wrote in February 2012 on Twitter; 'Do they make candy hearts that say "rape me"???'
And in December 2010 wrote on the social media platform; 'I am going to rape your knees with hot fire.'
Deen, 30, born Bryan Sevilla, used Twitter to defend himself against the allegations in December, 2015, around the same time Rayne's interview was published.
He addressed claims by three accusers, writing; 'There have been some egregious claims made against me on social media.
'I want to assure my friends, fans and colleagues that these allegations are both false and defamatory.
'I respect women and I know and respect limits both professionally and privately.'
Rayne, who survived uterine cancer five years ago, was an avid horse fan and would often share pictures of her riding her beloved animals on social media
In response to the allegations he resigned as chairperson of the labor group Adult Performer Advocacy Committee's board of directors.
APAC Secretary Ela Darling released a statement about the resignation following the announcement.
'APAC recognizes the seriousness of the statements made by performers in the community and that they indicate a major conflict between a board member and other members of the organization.
'In the meantime, APAC will continue to provide support and guidance for adult performers.
'The APAC Board wants to state unequivocally that we stand with performers and other sex workers who are victims of any sort of sexual assault. APAC is committed to being a safe space for performers, and to creating a safer and healthier industry.'
Deen has not been arrested and refutes the claims.
In December he said he was 'honestly shocked' and 'completely baffled' by the sudden barrage of claims, and that he believes he has always respected a woman's right to consent both in his work and in his personal life.

Rayne is believed to have suffered from uterine cancer around nine years ago. In an interview she said she'd had been through 'relentless' chemotherapy
This form of the disease is often referred to as cancer of the uterus, endometrial cancer or uterine cancer. It is cancer that affects the lining of the womb.
Each year cases of the disease increase in number, as lifestyle changes put more women at risk.
If womb cancer is caught in the early stages it is almost always curable, so it is vital that women know the symptoms to look for, and feel confident discussing them with their GP.
The earliest signs of the disease are:
