Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, Marilyn Monroe had a rough childhood. Her mother was institutionalized, and she didn’t know her father. The actress went to a series of orphanages and foster homes, which wasn’t much better. She got married at 16 to a neighborhood friend to avoid going back to an orphanage but divorced in 1946.
Marilyn Monroe continued to model, which soon landed her a contract with 20th Century Fox. Her first appearance on the big screen is for a small part in the 1947 movie The Shocking Miss Pilgrim. That same year, she had a minor role in Dangerous Years and an eminently forgettable one in the film Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! In 1948. It led to Fox declining to renew her contract, which prompted the actress to go back to modeling and enroll in acting school.
In 1948, she got a much better break in Ladies of the Chorus. While she got praises from critics for her two numbers in the film, Columbia Pictures still dropped her.
Her appearance in Love Happy in 1949, the same year she also posed nude for the calendar, which later appeared in the 1953 copy of the playboy magazine, skyrocketed her career.
In 1950, Marilyn Monroe’s show business career started to pick up. She appeared in five different films, including All About Eve and The Asphalt Jungle, two of her short but notable performances. The following year, she landed a sizable part in the movie Love Nest and the public started to notice.
In 1952, Marilyn Monroe also got a role in Bother to Knock, but her appearance in Monkey Business that same year cemented her budding success. A year later, she played the character of Lorelei Lee in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
Despite the rough start in the acting world, Marilyn Monroe started to become a box office actress. She appeared in the 1953 film How to Marry a Millionaire and in There’s No Business Like Show Business the following year. She quickly followed her busy career with another movie in 1955, The Seven Year Itch, which highlighted her comedic talent.
However, her memorable moments started to go downhill from there. Fox suspended her for not reporting for work in the shooting of the film The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing, followed by a second suspension in How to Be Very Very Popular, both in 1955.
She followed it with a couple of appearances, although those didn’t pan out great. Her role in the 1959 comedy film Some Like It Hot was a smash hit. However, that was only Marilyn Monroe’s film for the year.
Her movie appearances also include the 1960s film Let’s Make Love and what would be her last movie, The Misfits in 1961, after getting fired from the set of the 1962 film “Something’s Got to Give.”
Marilyn Monroe’s acting career wasn’t perfect, so was her life. However, she remains to be one of the most celebrated artists of all time, especially her unquestionable beauty.
