They say, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. This saying could not be more true when describing hiring a car from Ally Keys. Although he offered a cheap rate, the service was so terrible that I would have been much better off taking local transport. We arranged to hire a car from Ally Keys to be delivered to where we were staying in Nungwi and planned on driving around the island. Zanzibar law requires all drivers to have a special permit to drive there. Knowing that it would take some time to process this, I contacted Ally Keys 2 days prior to the day I wanted to hire a car to ensure he would have enough time to get me a permit. We had intended to depart very early so that we could maximize the time we had with the car to explore the island. The next day, as nobody showed up to collect my license, I called him several times and each time, he assured me that he would come soon in order to file for the permit. By the end of the day, it was obviously too late to get the permit that day and of course it would take time out of our day to process the next day, which we wanted to spend actually using the car. Finally, at pm, one of his employees showed up stoned with the car and demanded money for the rental and the driving permit along with my license. I was upset because I Ally Keys promised me that the permit would already be sorted out by this time. The employee repeatedly assured me that it was no problem, that if the police stop me, just to tell them to call him and he would sort everything out. I had absolutely no confidence in this at all. At this point, I should have just taken my money back, but we had only 2 days left in our holiday and I really wanted to make the most of it. The employee then smoked marijuana and slept in the car we were to use the next day. The next morning, when we were ready to depart with the hired car , we still had no permit and no confidence that the employee Ally Keys sent to handle it would actually do so. The employee actually thought that I would then drive him back to Zanzibar Town more than an hour away , but this was not our plan. Assuming that we would already have the permit, we planned on spending the day visiting the beautiful natural attractions of the island rather than waste half a day driving in and out of the congested city to sort out paperwork. We got in the car and took off for Zanzibar Town to sort out the permit through Ally Keys directly, leaving his lazy, useless employee stranded in Nungwi. Less than 2 kilometers after setting out, we ran out of gas. The employee had delivered a car completely empty of petrol. We then had to hitchhike to the petrol station, buy petrol and hitchhike back to the car to fuel up. This took more than an hour out of our day. I resorted to the excuse that we were heading now to sort it out because Ally Keys and his employee did nothing that they had promised and urged him to call to verify this. I knew I was breaking the law and I was an idiot for trusting Ally Keys, but as I said, he had continually assured me that this would not be a problem. Ally Keys apologized and promised me that he would sort out the permit once we arrived in Stone Town. His employees claimed that he was in Dar es Salaam, but this was obviously a cowardly lie because surely he would have told me this before during our many conversations. They had been authorized to give me free day to make up for the fiasco they had caused. By this point, we were so upset, stressed and disappointed that we were inclined to simply ask for our money back. Eventually, we accepted the offer and handed over my license so that his employee could get me a permit. As he sped off, he said he would be back in 10 minutes. The next morning, the same employee that Ally Keys had threatened to kick out of his company was waiting outside our hotel room for the keys to the car. Apparently, he had not been told that we would be taking the car for another day. He pounded on the hood of the car as we pulled away to enjoy the day we had planned driving around beautiful Zanzibar. The morning we were to leave, somebody I had never seen before demanded money for the additional day of rental. This is what is in store for you if you decide to rent a car from Ally Keys. This has put me off hiring a car in Zanzibar I would need some persuading to visit the place let alone drive there. Where an International driving licence is perfectly acceptable. No typo Ivan.
