Marijuana plants are dioecious, meaning the can grow up to be male, female or hermaphrodite. What that means is that during flowering, males will produce ballsacks filled with pollen , females will produce bullet-shaped calyxes and pistils , while hermaphrodites will produce both. Knowing all about cannabis sex is especially important to growers, as male and hermaphrodite plants do not produce usable buds. From that moment on, the female flower will be unusable for recreational or medicinal purposes, as its potency and quality will be diminished. Getting seeds instead of smokable buds is the no 1 disaster for the casual grower. Therefore, caring for your plants and making sure that no males stay in your garden will save you money and frustration. It is impossible to guess the sex of a plant by looking at the seed. Somewhere between the transition from vegetative to flowering , the pre-flowers start to form. These tiny undergrowths are what will develop into the reproductive organs of the plant. Knowing how to read them will help you immensely, as you will be able to remove males well ahead of schedule. Pre-flowers usually appear between the 6th-7th week from seed. Use a magnifying glass to take a better look: Male pre-flowers look like balls, while females calyxes are pear-shaped. During the vegetative stage, plants grow quickly and vigorously, while the flowering stage is when marijuana switches focus from root development to flower-growing. Bear in mind that if a plant is kept in the vegetative stage for a long time, it will eventually grow pre-flowers. It is very useful that you become a pro at this, as it will help you grow much more weed in the long run. In the following sections, I have included useful videos and images that show you how to distinguish male and hermaphrodite from female plants. The first signs of a female cannabis plant are the pistils : Wispy hair-like protrusions that appear right where the buds are going to develop usually between the main stem and the branch. A pointy calyx and little white hairs pistils. Especially during the early stages of flowering, it is easy to confuse a female pre-flower with a male. In that case, its shape should give you the answer: Females are more elongated and shaped like a pear. If you are still unsure, you can wait until the pistils start sticking out. These balls will start forming shortly after you switch to flowering. It is important to take them out ASAP to avoid them bursting open all over your female plants. These balls are going to be filled with pollen really soon! Hermaphrodites can pollinate themselves and your whole growing area if you are not careful. What exactly causes them is still not verified, although stressful situations are the number one culprit: Abnormal temperatures , light leaks during the dark cycle or other extreme environmental factors can trigger hermaphroditism in marijuana. Whatever the reason for it, as soon as you spot hermaphrodite plants in your garden, you must remove them immediately. Hermaphrodite marijuana plants are just as dangerous as males! If you are growing marijuana for medicinal purposes, you need to know how to identify female and male marijuana plants. Almost all growers prefer female marijuana plants because only females produce the coveted buds needed for medicinal purposes. Male plants have low potency and THC content compared to the female plants, and they are kept to mostly produce seeds. Then, look for male plants to have thicker stalks and fewer leaves than their female counterparts. You can also tell if a plant is male by checking for little flowers or bulbs at the joints of the stalk and branches. For tips on what to do with plants that have both male and female organs, read on! Learn more Method 1. Look thicker, sturdier stalks with fewer leaves on male plants. A male plant, compared to a female plant of the same strain, generally has a thicker stalk. That is because it gets taller than female plants and needs to be able to support the weight. They also have fewer leaves than female plants. Check your plants regularly from July to September to sex them. If male plants are allowed to pollinate, they will severely lower the potential crop of your female plants. If you are growing indoors you will likely be visiting your plants regularly, so the following checks should be easy to do. You need to check every plant to determine if it is male or female, as one rogue male can wreck your harvest. In general, male plants show their sex days indoor or 3 weeks outdoor before female plants. Check the joints on the stalk for male flowers. The little balls that grow on the joints of the stalk where the other branches meet the main stalk are the main indicators of male plants. These flowers release pollen and need to be removed for a better crop. Female plants will have these bulbs too, but will also have long, translucent hairs on them. If you only see on a plant, wait and see if more develop before cutting them. Know that hermaphroditic both sexes plants exist, and should be treated as males. Marijuana plants can grow both sex organs. If you see any of the tell-tale male buds, you should trim them like you would a normal male plant. They will still release pollen that can ruin your crop. Throw out or remove male plants unless you specifically want seeds. Do not try and remove the buds by hand, as missing even a few will significantly decrease your crop. While most growers simply throw the plants out, a few keep them around for breeding purposes. Method 2. Let the plants grow for roughly six weeks before sexing them. Marijuana plants, male and female, will be identical in the first 6 weeks of life. However, there are occasional errors, and you should still keep a close eye on your plants to make sure there are no rogue males. Note fuller bodies of leaves, when compared to males, on a grown female plant. Male plants have thicker, sturdier stalks and very few leaves. A female of the same strain will be shorter and bushier, with more leaves, especially near the top. Check the joints for of the stalk for small, translucent hairs. Once the plant has matured enough, a female will begin flowering. Frequently, there will also be 'growth tips,' which are new branches and groups of leaves, growing as well. Male plants will have the small buds pollen sacs but will not have the associated hair growing out of it. Plants can grow both pollen sacs and pistols. If it does, it is hermaphroditic and should be treated like a male. Separate your females from any males, as only females create buds. The pistol is meant to attract pollen. If it gets it, it will create a seed, and all the plants energy and nutrients will be spent making seeds, not making big, THC-full buds. Your female plants are the only ones that will produce a crop, but only if they stay away from the males. Grow Experiments. Just make sure to keep an eye on the plant and give it plenty of fresh air, as that is likely what it is used to. Keep in mind that the sun is the best grow light, though, so you should leave it outdoors if you can! Yes No. Not Helpful 2 Helpful Yes, the largest amount of CBD in a plant is in the stalk of a male plant. Not Helpful 15 Helpful It needs a light cycle with a minimum of 12 hours of uninterrupted, complete darkness every day to trigger and maintain flowering. Not Helpful 31 Helpful Be grateful, because you probably have female plants. Female plants are the only plants that produce buds. Not Helpful 5 Helpful I have a 6 month old indoor plant but it is not budding or showing any male gender. The plant stands about 51 inches tall; it appears to be healthy, very green, most of the nodes are standing up instead of sagging. What could be the problem? Plants usually need around 12 hours of darkness to bud. That is why they bud at the end of the summer. If you have these indoors where they get light for more than 12 hours, that is your problem. Not Helpful 35 Helpful This is called cloning. Not Helpful 27 Helpful A plant with 3 leaves is ruderalis, a wild outdoor variety. Not Helpful 14 Helpful Not Helpful 8 Helpful Many advise metal halide for vegetation and high pressure sodium for flowering. If your want to use blue light for vegetation, use k cool white CFL because you can keep them close and avoid stretch. HPS is fine for the entire grow because the lack of blue keeps them short. Not Helpful 21 Helpful Let the soil dry out before watering again. Cannabis plants are resilient and will usually recuperate from over-watering.
